Today marks 10 YEARS since HBO’s cultural phenom series Sex and the City went off the air.  To celebrate we’re counting down our top ten favorite moments from the series.  There are many more than 10 great scenes in SatC, for sure so please feel free to contribute your own favorites in the comments below.

Charlotte meeting Trey in the most dramatic of ways – getting hit by a cab and meeting him while being helped up. Charlotte, the hopeless romantic of the quartet, was always hoping to find the right man and was convinced that he was out there, somewhere. When she finally met him, it was love at first sight. (Fairy tale wedding and amicable divorce later on are two totally different stories for another time)

Carrie and Big’s on again, off again relationship. So many ups and so many downs. Carrie is in love with Big and the problem, for the longest time, is that he would not commit to a monogamous relationship. Much of Carrie’s heartache centered on whether or not she and Big could get through his travelling to France for work, his indifference, the fact that he swore off marriage and then, the ultimate blow was when he got engaged to Natasha, the tall, willowy brunette. Carrie called her “the stick figure with no soul.” Oh, burn!

Carrie and Aidan’s relationship disaster: Carrie finally finds a great guy, with a great job and messes it all up when she cheats on him with Big. Aidan was completely opposite to Carrie, as he loved the country, had a dog and believed in not always being available. He gave her some much needed relationship security and she goes ahead and cheats on him. Charlotte later finds out by accident and while Carrie tries to explain, it was pointless. At Charlotte’s wedding to Trey, Carrie and Aidan break up.

Continuing on the ‘Carrie Big’ theme, another memorable moment is at the end of Big’s engagement party to Natasha at the Plaza, Carrie sees Big in his limo. She is dressed in a slinky white gown and her hair is free, curly and wild around her. They speak briefly outside his limousine and she says her trademark line, “Your girl is lovely, Hubbell.” (A nod to Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford). He doesn’t quite understand the line and she tells him, “And you never will.” She walks off, leaving him to gaze at her. While walking away from him, feeling empowered, she sees a beautiful white horse rearing up, in protest to his carriage master and believes that she was too wild for Big and that he could never tame her.

Charlotte and her divorce attorney, Harry end up having a fling. Harry was attracted to Charlotte from the get go and being the tough, aggressive lawyer he was, set out to prove it. Charlotte, who wanted everything to be just perfect, as if all relationships were based out of Home and Garden magazine, did not see Harry in that light. In fact, he was the last man she had on her dating radar. While considering her options, post-divorce, he shows her his apartment that he sublets. He makes his true intentions known when he tells her, “I fantasize about your perfect pink lips.” He puts on the stereo, surround sound and tried to put the moves on Charlotte. They both succumb to the pent up passion inside them. It was one of the funniest and sexiest scenes (in my opinion)! That song in the background DEFINITELY set the mood.

Samantha meets a gorgeous business man, who we know as ‘Mr. Cocky.’ The man is aggressive, follows her on the street and asks her out on a date. Samantha, who was ravishing in red, agrees to go out with him. She gets more than she bargained for, once they are alone in her bedroom. To quote George Takei, “Oh myyyyyy!” Samantha found the mother lode, so to speak, which brings the debate about size being an issue. In Samantha’s case, extra-large was something she just couldn’t handle!

“I’m sorry, I can’t. Don’t hate me.” The Break up post-it note that Carrie gets from Berger was a low point for her. Every relationship has its’ ups and downs but to be in one with a fellow writer that couldn’t be happy for your success, it’s tough. To make matters worse, their love life really stank. It seemed that they weren’t compatible in the bedroom but after another round, that problem was solved. However, when it came time to breaking up with her, Berger couldn’t do what normal men do, and break up with Carrie face to face. Instead, he took the coward’s way out and left her a post-it note. OUCH.

Samantha being diagnosed with cancer prior to Miranda and Steve’s wedding day. That was somewhat of a shocker, as Samantha was visiting her doctor in order to get a consultation for a breast enhancement surgery. It’s a good thing the doctor found the lump when he did. Samantha, true to form, launched an aggressive chemotherapy treatment and would not let the dreaded disease beat her spirit down. The four ladies supported each other through this, as did Smith, her boyfriend.

Miranda getting pregnant by Steve, her ex-boyfriend. Considering Miranda was a Type A personality who worked 60 hour weeks, didn’t really fit the ‘mother’ archetype and had a no nonsense approach to her love life and career, this was a shocker. She had considered getting an abortion, but the fact that she had a lazy ovary and Steve had undergone treatment for testicular cancer made her realize that perhaps having a surprise pregnancy was somehow her destiny.

Big coming to Carrie’s rescue, in Paris, no less! Carrie was in a relationship (if that’s what you could call it) with an artist named Aleksandr Petrovsky. He was self-centered and wealthy. His career came before their relationship. Carrie made a huge mistake not thinking things through and decided to move to Paris. Everything looks pretty when you’re looking at it through rose coloured lenses. The stark reality is that Carrie was all alone, isolated, didn’t know the language, Aleksandr’s artsy circle and had nobody there for moral support. The girls back home speak with big. Miranda delivers the best line of the episode: “Go get our girl.” True to form, Big goes to Paris and after a series of escapades, brings Carrie home.

*Bonus* At the end when Carries says, “Later that day I got to thinking about relationships. There are those that open you up to something new and exotic; those that are old and familiar; those that bring up lots of questions’ those that bring your somewhere unexpected; those that bring you far from where you started and those that bring you back. But the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love that you you love, well, that’s just fabulous.”

I loved Sex and the CIty (i still do) but i always just hated Carrie mainly because I am a seriously happy member of Team Aidan. Always will be. Fingers still crossed for a third movie!

I would be very interested to hear from other ladies (and gents) about what memorable moments they thought should have been on the list. A good friend of mine said that she thought the time that Samantha went incognito and spied on a cheating Richard was hilarious. After reviewing that scene, yes, I thought it was pretty funny!

My wife’s favorite episode is where they smoke pot out on the street. Pretty funny.
