So many shows these days make ignorant decisions and lose viewers. I used to be a fan of Dexter till they killed his wife off. Now I used to be a fan of GOT’S but they’ve killed off the best and most likable character. To hell with how the books go, I believe many only gave this show a chance because Sean Bean was on it. Now they kill him off. May as well have just “killed” some of their viewers as well. Screw this show, HBO…you suck balls! lol

ummm…alll your reviews are pretty cool… I haven read the books yet as im stuck with the wheel of time but i’da have to say, like someone else put it…evry1 is dissapointed with sean bean as an actor leaving the show rather than his character being killed off… but then those who think otherwise..i believe there are no actual cut out heroes or heroines in this show…its all a race to the throne and anything goes!! but i hope like deadwood they can bring back sean as another character completely…cz he’s a great actor!!

IF NED STARK DOES NOT RETURN 2012, I WILL NOT MAKE AN EFFORT TO LOOK AT THIS HBO SEQUEL. TAKING THE AUDIENCE TO THE EDGE IS OK, BUT WITHOUT THE MAIN FAIR MINDED HUMANM, IT JUST TURNS INTO A BUNCH OF “JUNK”; IT SEEMS AS THOUGH IT HAS LOST ITS’ BALANCE – TOO MUCH CORRUPTION IS TOO MUCH “VOMIT” – PLEASE SEND STARK BACK. WINTERFELL NEEDS HIM ALSO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I liked the ending a lot. I want to be entertained and surprised, and this did it. I also like how it sets the stage for Stark’s son to step up. Great stuff.

As someone who has never read the books, but is just watching this series as a TV show, I say: classy work; kudos to HBO and the Game of Thrones writers. Consider me happy and entertained.

What happened was bullshit! Life is tough enough, so when you watch something, you want to escape from reality and all the badness and get what you want, which is good triumphant over evil..I was rooting for Ned to pull it all together and win out..now I can’t watch it anymore. I haven’t been this upset since Meg Ryan died at the end of City of Angels. To hell with HBO and especially the writer of the books..thanks for nothing!

I agree with most of you, the fact that the actual battle got cut out made me mad as well. But I guess it’s because the limited budget of a TV series. Compared to Camelot, the awesome small battles that this series has showed totally overpowers Camelot.

– Spoiler Warning –

Don’t worry, guys. The annoying spoiled king will be dead later in the second book (or season 2). The twin Lannister and that Littlefinger dude won’t be dead though even until the newest book.

– Heavy Spoiler Warning –

You should also prepare for the fact that Robb and Catelyn Stark will die and Winterfell will be sacked. Not to worry though, there are many lovable new characters that will replace them.

So many dumb comments. Have any of you ever watched an HBO show before? They often kill off big characters.

Also, moaning because main characters aren’t invulnerable is childish as hell. It’s part of what makes the story so exciting – this is a world where consequences are real and bad things happen. Go watch your predictable, comfy nonsense if you can’t deal with even the slightest deviation from black and white storytelling.

When I watched Eddard killed off it made me very disappointed and quite angry. I started to watch Game of Thrones because of Sean Bean and I feel like the show has somehow betrayed me. I will watch it again but it better come up with the goods or I will be voting with a quick press of the button on my remote!!

Somebody up there posted about no battle scenes in Game of Thrones – well it made me MAD as well. I was soo looking forward to see this :( How come??? Reallly, isn’t it supposed to be a SHOW? A first, but huge flaw in the series, imho.

As to Ned Stark killing – well, people, i understand your emotions but go and discuss that with Martin, not HBO. No complains from me here, although the ‘deed’ made me sad too.

I found it to be a bit of a shock that he was killed off in last episode even tho i was warned he wouldnt be around on season 2 as its based on a book. But sence sean bean was the main actor in the show for me i wonder why they didnt give him another character to play that doesnt get killed off to quick. Because i wasnt bothered about the king being killed off and i dout anyone would be bothered if the kings right hand man would of been killed off if played by someone who wasnt so known.

I just dont think that big dramatic moment was worth it to kill off sean beans character. I would of liked to sean more of him as ned stark even if it meant tweaking the story line from the book. And was excepting his character to do abit more and get payback on his enemrys because he kinda got owned and betrayed alot.

WHERE ARE THE BATTLE SCENES? This show better not be pulling a “Rome” on us. If you didn’t have the budget to do this show right, you shouldn’t have done it.

@TyrionFan I think you’re right about those missed moments, but I suspect it was mainly a budgeting issue. Game Of Thrones must already being costing an arm and a leg to produce – what with all the period costumes, horses, complex set pieces etc., any full scale depiction of a pitched battle would be even more pricey. The way they are depicting these scenes seems to suggest that they are aiming to save money where they can without comprising the story; and I think they’re doing a good job so far, although it would be cool to see at least one braveheart style battle play out before the end!

I was stunned last night. And riveted to the screen during the final scene with Ned. I thought it was brilliantly directed and acted but Sean Bean’s acting is what has kept me watching — thought he was the best actor in the show by a long shot. I like Arya and Jon Snow but not enough to commit to S2. The Dani/Dothraki storyline has been too predictable. I’ll watch the finale and see if HBO can hook me into S2 — but now that Bean’s gone I’m definitely on the fence.

I haven’t read the book yet but I knew ned is going to die trough some research on line, even do I knew he is going to die but it was so sad watching this episode.I start watching Game Of Throne because of him,I just hope they will bring some more first class actor as they are NOT many famous people in Game Of Throne.

There are things we all assume about stories – the good guys win and the bad guys lose, miraculous things happen that prevent the loved character/s from dying. Everyone assumes this is how it’s going to be.

And this is why GRRM is such an amazing author – he takes you out of that comfort zone where you think you know how it’s going to go. With Ned’s death that security of thinking it’ll all be OK is gone, and therefore the story becomes much more real; we can’t assume we know how it’s going to go anymore, and that makes the story all the more enticing and real. GRRM is an amazing author.

Where are the BATTLE SCENES???!!!

They cut out 2 of the most badass moments on book 1

1. the ownage of tywin when he hears the scout report
“They say he crossed at the Twins with the great part of his horse, riding hard for Riverrun.

2. The northmen blowing their bombastic horns one by one, then Greywind joining in as the final note

Man, It’s like watching a show about War without the War. >.<

Blaming HBO for what happened to eddard is beyond the god damn pale of idiocy.

Why does Sean Bean always get to play parts that don’t last through the series or movie?
He’s such a strong actor and such an asset to any production he plays in. I knew Ned was going to die, I have read the books. But it’s just sad, I think, that Sean Bean will now disappear should the series continue.

Unfortunately, Ned Stark had the wrong ending. It hit hard seeing a good father being taken young.
Sean is out on another movie so at least we have that to look forward to.
Excellent acting as always….

He was actually the one I could least sympathize with. Ned had to die to set up the events that are about to occur. Don’t worry it’s about to get awesome. And traumatizing. Then awesome again. :D

The “main characters” of the show are the youg cast. Jon, Robb, Bran, Arya, Santa, Dany…. and the not-young-but-awesome Tyrion.
In this series, Ned is something like Obi-Wan Kenobi or Dumbledore, he had to be killed for the development of another characters.

Game of Thrones is now my new fave HBO series – we have watched Tony almost get whacked, Brother Justin turn evil in Carnivale, Sookie escape death like a cat but never and Bill Paxton battle the Compound BUT never have we all been so shocked and anticipating the next show. Better episode then the finale in Soprano’s. Excellent Work!

It surprises me that some would quit watching this series because of the shock of last nights episode. Those of us who have read the books, know what is in store. This isn’t a series about the Starks, they are but players in the grand Game of Thrones. If you think that is shocking, just wait. So far, HBO is right with the books, and I hope they stay that way. Yes, it’s sad, shocking, but that is what makes these books so wonderful! Nobody is safe in the Game of Thrones! Now everyone who is fan needs to have a summer reading party of the GoTs!

Can’t believe the people that are mad at HBO. They’re following the books lol. Personally I like that the story is unpredictable – it makes it exciting! this isn’t your typical hollywood story.

Since I haven’t read the books I’m on the edge of my seat with what could happen next. Hoping for revenge. Excellent episode and a great finale for Sean to go out on, superb acting. Left my jaw open as the credits rolled.

The end of Season 1 is indeed a great tragedy, and something not a lot of authors, or producers of shows would allow. I think that’s part of what makes it such a bold move, and even though it is sad, it paves the way for the story to come.

If HBO changed the ending to the first book, they essentially would not be doing “Game of Thrones” any more, because everything is connected, and everything follows from what came before.

Eugisuke June 13, 2011 - 1:05 pm

@Zastai is so right, I’m the first one who didn’t want Ned to die, but if they had “saved” him they would have changed the book too much and we the fans of the saga would have felt betrayed.

loved sean bean’s work it was amazing and he gave life to one of my favorite characters so perfectly.

even though i had already read the books and i knew what was going to happen i was glued to the screeen.

and to the people who haven’t read the books, do it! its a great series and book 5 is coming in july 12! it might not be til late next year that we see another episode of the series once season 1 ends, but we know book 2 is being prepared for season 2 if you were shocked and addicted at season one, wait til you see all the great stuff that happens in books 2-4.

but one thing is sure, Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage and everyone else were perfect in their roles. a million thanks to them for such great work.

@Mo: HBO is following the books, like it should. If you can’t handle a story where main characters are not magically invulnerable, then A Song of Ice and Fire (the series of books that Game of Thrones is based on) is most definitely not for you.

Last night’s episode made me so mad! It’s not just that Eddard is one of the main characters–it’s that he’s the main character that viewers (at least myself and others I know) rooted for and empathized with the most. He was my favorite to watch. HBO, you better bring it in upcoming episodes!

*crys* why does he always die. Every time Sean Bean dies I cry so hard. He does it in good drama. It bummed me out when he died in LOTR. Why he’s the main Character!!!!! SO MAD! Well more sad. He was like the only actor i cared for on the show. He’s THE BEST actor on the show!
