HBO will keep hushed on it for now, but you can’t keep the rest of us quiet regarding the news of the fourth season of TRUE DETECTIVE being in development. The internet is all over the announcement. It is going by the title TRUE DETECTIVE: NIGHT COUNTRY and it is under a new creative team than previous seasons. That doesn’t rule out that Nic Pizzolatto, the originator of the series, won’t be credited as a producer and/or writer for the new iteration.

People_Issa-LopezSo, who is at the helm? Issa López (pictured, right), writer and director of Mexican film Tigers Are Not Afraid (Vuelven), which won a slew of awards over the last few years, is a writer and executive producer for the work. She is said to also be directing the pilot episode. She does all this with executive producer Barry Jenkins, who has been responsible for such works as Oscar-winning Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk and Amazon’s The Underground Railroad. He takes on this project with his company Pastel.

We reported back in February of last year that this series had a possibility of returning. But Content Officer Casey Bloys said just what we wanted to hear, that it wasn’t going forward unless it was right. A few people were circling the series after Pizzolatto’s pitch didn’t trigger excitement but López evidently tapped into the right gothic tone that TRUE DETECTIVE offered when it was at its best. It will be interesting to see if Pizzolatto weighs in or not, but remember, the show has always been an anthology series, so, a fresh take cannot be a bad thing if it can nail down the show’s vibe. That vibe was, of course, established effectively in Season One, but was just present in Season Two and less so in Three, but it can be found again. Evidently, Issa López has found it; at least we hope the fourth season can capture it just right. We shall see.

I’m ecstatic over True Detective coming back. Let’s hope you can come close to season one. Matthew and Woody broke the mold with their acting skills for the parts they portrayed. I look forward to seeing what can top season one.

Hopefully, we will not be disappointed. With Jodie Foster onboard though I think we’ll be alright.

I couldn’t agree more. Again, I hope it serves the same tone as the first two seasons.
