Wow, okay, but should he? True fans know full well that HBO’s TRUE DETECTIVE series was started by Nic Pizzolatto, who crafted the first three seasons of the anthology series. That first season, from 2014, took off as a dynamic and mysterious crime tale for its stars Woody Harrelson (Martin “Marty” Hart) and Matthew McConaughey ( Rustin “Rust” Cohle) that achieved great acclaim for all involved.
Now, it appears that Pizzolatto thinks he can catch ‘lightning in a bottle’ yet again with a return of those characters. Can he? Many attempts of trying to recapture the greatness of a production have fallen flat. Should it be risked with this show? The filmmaker stated, “I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that — who knows? — maybe we’ll do it one day. It’s character-based again. … But it’s not something I’ve written or anything. It’s just, I had that in my head. And we’ve talked about getting back together and doing it, and I think the guys are open to it. It’s just a question of whether that would ever happen or not.”
But we also know that Pizzolatto seemed to resent the fact that Issa Lopez was able to run the fourth installment successfully enough to garner some praise, and that she is onboard for a fifth iteration that is projected for 2027. He did end up backpedaling on those claims later on. He made the statement, “I was the one who walked away from my contract at the end of 2019. I believe if I had given them a good script for another season of ‘True Detective,’ I believe they would have gone for it. But I myself was spiritually tired of walking in that much darkness. And dealing with such dark materials. And then I got full custody of my daughter back and that was a situation where I really needed to be a father… and I had to step away from a lot of work in 2020.”
So, he is throwing it out there that his head is now clear of the darkness, and his family is well, and that Harrelson and McConaughey are game to get back into the heads of their characters. So, with just that, he expects HBO to bring him back to the fold? Perhaps this can lead to some dialogue towards that eventuality, but walking in with a solid synopsis or a passel of scripts would have been a stronger move to play.
So, will we see Nic Pizzolatto and his famous Louisiana homicide investigators return for TRUE DETECTIVE Season 6? Can ‘lightning in a bottle” be captured twice? Start writing now, Pizzolatto, start writing today.
