We think the DC Universe, or is it the DCEU, has been a baffling conundrum since James Gunn/Peter Safran took the reins and that includes the Max series PEACEMAKER with John Cena. The series ended its premiere season way back on February 17, 2022, and production on ensuing exploits has yet to make a comeback. All that even though each episode of the DC series received higher viewership than the last and the season finale’s viewership was 44 percent higher than the series premiere’s. The finale broke the record for highest single-day viewership of an HBO Max original episode. You’d think they would have wanted to ride that wave but, instead, the studio went into a new direction and leadership.
PEACEMAKER, however, was not forgotten and finally, a sophomore season has gotten before the cameras back in April of this year. However, John Cena himself says he expects the series to keep on task and finish up just short of Christmas of this year. Mr. Gunn has since clarified that the new season will take place after the events of Superman and is a part of the new DCU continuity as opposed to being linked with the old DCEU. The Man of Steel movie is not to arrive until July of 2025 making any new episodes of PEACEMAKER not arriving nearly four years after its debut. Are we even going to remember or care by then? At least it is not as agonizing a wait as it is for EUPHORIA Season Three.
By the time this DC series rolls around again the DC Universe will be a different experience. Will there be excitement and success for the brand, including Cena’s series, or will the dreaded superhero fatigue tire us of it? That is a debate for true fans of the brand, but PEACEMAKER is still in the mix and it is slowly making progress.
