Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, John Cena, Chuckwudi Iwuji, Freddie Stroma and Danielle Brooks

John Cenas’ character Peacemaker was first introduced in the movie The Suicide Squad. Christopher “Chris” Smith better known as Peacemaker, is part of DCEU or DC Extended Universe. The movie introduces Chris as a crazed defender of justice who believes in peace and liberty no matter the cost. His famous quote “I cherish peace with all my heart. I don’t care how many men, women and children I need to kill to get it” proves his insane mind.

Chris was raised by his father Auggie Smith, also known as White Dragon a leader of a white supremacist organization known as the Aryan Empire. Auggie is a former soldier and a racist who instilled his insane beliefs into his young son. He put Chris through rigorous disciplines right from the start. The severe training Chris went through as a child left him psychologically damaged. Chris was also left emotionally scared when he was a young boy. He had an older brother who he looked up to. Having said that, one day Chris punched his brother during a fight. As a result of the hit, Christopher’s brother died of a stroke. Throughout his life Chris blamed himself for the incident which only furthered his crazy justice ideology.

We begin Peacemaker the HBO Max series 5 months after the whole fiasco with Project Starfish ended. Chris is recovering in the hospital from all of his injuries. Thinking he is finally free from Weller and Task Force X he leaves the hospital and heads back to his trailer home. Unfortunately for Chris, he runs into a group of A.R.G.U.S. agents. Clemson Murn the team leader, Emila Harcourt, John Economos, and Leota Adebayo who is a new addition to the team. Murn gives Chris two choices, go back to REVE prison or work with Task Force X to eliminate Project Butterfly. Smith unwillingly accepts the offer to join Murn and his team. Chris once again returns to being Peacemaker fighting with the “good” guys for justice.

Robert Patrick and John Cena (Auggie and Chris Smith)

After being forced to rejoin Task Force X, Chris goes to his father’s house to try to reconnect as he was in prison for the past 5 years. Peacemaker has a pet eagle named Eagley and while in prison Chris left Eagly in his father’s care. When Chris visits his father, he also reunites with Eagley. During the visit, things don’t go as planned for Chris as Auggie is one tough S.O.B. who has always been hard on Chris. Chris tries his best to please his father and prove to him that he is worth his love. Unfortunately for Chris, Auggie despises Chris, he thinks Peacemaker is a joke, he hates that Chris was the one who lived while his brother did not. No matter how hard Chris tries he will never be good enough for his father.

While Chris is with his father, Task Force X sets up new headquarters. The HQ is located in an old store in an undesirable part of town, which I guess is a good place to run a Black OPS. The team consists of team leader Murn, Harcourt, Economos, Adebayo, and now Peacemaker. Later that evening the team meets up for dinner at a casual diner to go over the first part of the mission. The rest of the team waits for Chris to show up and when he eventually does, he’s wearing his full Peacemaker suit, helmet included. During the briefing, Chris calls over the waitress calling her “Sweet Cheeks” to order food. This shows how insensitive, sexist and stuck in his arrogant ways he truly is. Whilst the team discusses the plan, we meet another character named Adrian. He may or may not come into play sometime during the series. But let’s leave it at that for now.

On his way home Peacemaker spots Harcourt heading into a local bar. He decides to join her there and chat her up or possibly more, if you know what I mean. At the bar, Harcourt runs into some trouble with the local hoodlums but it’s nothing that she can’t take care of on her own. Peacemaker joins Harcourt for a drink; however, she is deterred to be left alone. Despite Chris’s advances she rejects him big time and leaves him at the bar. Peacemaker sitting at the bar drinking his beer notices a lonely woman sitting at the table, the 80’s style chick is just his type. Peacemaker heads back to her place for some fun, wink, wink.

Viola Davis (Amenda Weller) and Danielle Brooks (Leota Adebayo)

The team stays at a local motel while on the mission. Adebayo shares her room with her wife Keeya; the couple’s relationship is quite strained as both of them have lost their jobs. Leota took the job with Task Force X as a way to earn some money so she and her wife could get back on their feet. Weller has asked Leota to plant a fake diary in Peacemaker’s trailer. Adebayo is very reluctant to do this job as she feels she isn’t cut out for it. While talking to Weller, she told her she wasn’t sure she wants to continue with this job. Weller however told her that she should stick with what she is good at and continue the work. Here is where we find out that Adebayo was placed by Weller in Task Force X as a spy and not only that Leota is Wellers’ daughter. Back in the 80’s chick apartment, Chris explores her Vinyl collection. Finding an old record of an 80’s rock band, he puts it on happily singing along. While in his singing moment, Chris does not notice that the woman goes into the kitchen and grabs a knife. Singing in the mirror he catches a glimpse of her running towards him with the knife. She cuts Chris several times as they fight throughout the whole apartment breaking everything in their path. Peacemaker eventually manages to escape by jumping through a window however the crazed woman is right behind him. She finds him in the parking lot attempting to climb into his car. As she runs toward Chris at full speed, Peacemaker manages to put on his helmet and blows her up. Let’s just say that part wasn’t very pretty. In the final moment of the episode, Eagley throws down a dead animal in front of Peacemaker as an offering of a job well done.

This first episode was filled with lots of little unexpected surprises, twists and humor that make you want to know more. If you like superhero, vigilante, antihero characters, this show is just up your alley.
