HBO has officially signed up Nic Pizzolatto, the creator and sole writer of TRUE DETECTIVE, to a two year development deal. Also, with the fact People_NicPizzolattothat it was HBO’s most watched series debut in over three years, TRUE DETECTIVE is likely to get a second season. HBO has yet to confirm that detail but Deadline.com reports that Mr. P. is preparing a draft of a second go-around to HBO executives. As sole writer of the series will he have the time to develop other fare? We will have to wait to see on that.

If nothing else we will settle for more TRUE DETECTIVE. Here is what Pizzolatto said at the Television Critic Association event earlier this year:

“If we got to do it again, the setting would be a major character, along with our leads with the show set in a place you wouldn’t normally set a television show.  I tried to make the format as broad for my tastes as possible in the sense that this is almost the True Detective version of a buddy‑cop movie hunting for a serial killer. And there could be a season that’s much more of a widespread conspiracy thriller, a season that’s a small‑town murder mystery, a season where nobody is murdered and it’s a master criminal versus a rogue detective or something. Even the title, True Detective, is meant to be, of course, purposefully somewhat generic – the word “true” can also mean honorable and authentic and things like that. So as long as there is some crime in there, I think the series format can approach it.”

That leads us to clearly expect something completely different in a sophomore season. HBOWatch will confirm a Season Two of TRUE DETECTIVE as soon as it is announced.

Good show but get rid of the gratuitous sex in a show filled with victims. Weird.

Expected greatness from two of my favorite actors. Big mistake. Boring psychoanalysis with no sense of the plot leading the action. After a half hour couldn’t care about the vapors of the so-called ritual killing. These guys not only analyze each other in the present/past but years later. The only murder that was hoping for was if MM strangles WH after telling him to shut up.

Art, you’re too busy trying to identify the familiars of true crime. The writing on this show expresses some of the most original thought I’ve ever seen. The “sin of being a father” speech was so unique and provocative. In other words, do not get so hung up on formula that you don’t hear the story.
