news-logoHere is a quick look at some HBO related news that has surfaced this past week. Honestly, it is difficult to keep up with the news at times. You might have seen these news items elsewhere but here is HBOWatch’s spin on it. Also note, if you ever have any news you wish us to explore let us know here at HBOWatch.

  • HBO at Comic-Con

HBO has announced that two of its shows will have panels at the king of pop culture conventions this year. Comic-Con 2012 in San Diego will be held July 13, 14, 15. Many shows and movies that have large connections with their fan base or have major news and teases they want heard appear at this event each year.

HBO offers two panels that will appear over the weekend; a TRUE BLOOD panel and a GAME OF THRONES one. Each event will consist of a panel of personalities from each project fielding questions and offering tidbits of facts about their show. The first one is from GAME OF THRONES on Friday, July 13. TRUE BLOOD will have their turn on Saturday, July 14. What follows is a listing of those schedulComic-Con_logo1ed to appear at each.

From GAME OF THRONES: George. R. R. Martin will be moderator for a panel comprised of Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark) and Richard Madden (Robb Stark).

Note: My colleague Charlie has given me a last minute update on this panel. It seems two actors are out of the event. Lena Heady is off the panel due to a scheduling conflict but Rose Leslie (Ygritte) will take her seat. Also to be absent is Kit Harington. It seems he is suffering from a broken ankle. The only information regarding his accident comes from an HBO representative who said the injury did not happen on set nor will it impart Kit’s production schedule.

From TRUE BLOOD: Entertainment Weekly’s Tim Stack will be moderator for a panel comprised of Alan Ball, creator and executive producer, Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pam Swynford de Beaufort), Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette Reynolds), Ryan Kwanten (Jason Stackhouse), Joe Manganiello (Alcide Herveaux), Christopher Meloni (Roman Zimojic), Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton), Anna Paquin (Sookie Stackhouse), Alexander Skarsgard (Eric Northman), Sam Trammell (Sam Merlotte), Rutina Wesley (Tara Thornton) and Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica Hamby).

You can be sure if there is any exciting news, teases, hints or surprises about either of these shows revealed at the event HBOWatch will know and present the details.

UPDATE: The Official Comic-Con poster for Game of Thrones has been revealed!

  • TREME Brass Band member dies.

One important part of TREME every season has always been the music. In the upcoming Season Three this fall, however, the show will be one musician short. Lionel Batiste, the vocalist, bass drummer and assistant leader of the Treme Brass Band, has died. He was 81.

treme-drumSays the band’s clarinet player Michael White, “he would bring joy and New Orleans spirit. … He made people feel good about themselves and about living,’’ He also noted that Batiste used his drum to stay afloat in the floods after Hurricane Katrina.”The water kept rising,’’ White said. ‘‘He couldn’t swim. The water was too high for him to walk out. He saved himself by floating out on top of his bass drum.’’

If you still can’t place who Lionel Batiste was in the show he was the one doing what is called ‘‘second-lining’’ or dancing and strutting with a decorated umbrella to the band’s music. He was the drum major of the jazz band and will be missed by his fellow musicians and by the fans of TREME.

HBOWatch will always keep it eye on the news. So, check back with what is happening at HBO!

As the writer for thtat particular piece., I wasn’t out to cause an issue.

Since the music played & heard in TREME is a vital part of the story I thought fans of the show might have wanted to know that a key element of that sound has left us. It seemed an image of Lionel Batiste would have been appropriate so fans were clear of whom I spoke. I didn’t know anyone would have cared or want credit for the picture I used.

My editor made the ruling to change the picture as not to cause any furthur problem. My acknowledgement of Mr. B’s passing , however, will still stand. RIP
