Movies_Sweethearts-PosterSWEETHEARTS is a 2024 romantic comedy directed and co-written by Jordan Weiss in her feature directorial debut. Produced by New Line Cinema and Picturestart, it stars Kiernan Shipka, Nico Hiraga, Caleb Hearon, Tramell Tillman, Charlie Hall, and Ava DeMary. The film was released on Max, as a Max Original Movie, on November 28, 2024. Yes, I know that is how far behind we are around here, but the 98-minute movie is parked on Max for you to seek out if an R-rated rom-com is the fix you need.

So, what’s the deal with this little couple? Ben (Hiraga) and Jamie (Shipka) are college freshmen and best friends since eighth grade. They are both in long-distance relationships with their high school sweethearts. Ben’s girlfriend Claire (DeMary) is controlling, and Jamie pushes him to set boundaries with her. Jamie is bored of her boyfriend, Simon (Hall), and struggles to develop friendships due to childhood bullying. Ben pushes Jamie to let her guard down and make friends. At their first college party, Ben rebuffs the sexual advances of a drunken woman while Jamie sneaks into a bedroom to sext with Simon. Jamie is forced to leave her clothes in the room when two partygoers enter to have sex. Ben attempts to sneak into the room to retrieve Jamie’s clothes but is caught. They are ejected from the party and, we guess a friendship blossoms.

Of course, there are awkward moments as they keep on running into each other with their current lovers and the usual romantic angst that muddles everything. Just how does this resolve into a good matchup for Ben & Jamie? That can only be answered for those who catch the movie. After all, the right sparks are what counts in a rom-com. A little trivia about our leads; Nico Hiraga is an avid skateboarder and was in the sports movie Skate Kitchen which led to HBO’s BETTY. He also appeared as himself in Season Four of BALLERS for a few episodes. Kiernan Shipka’s most notable TV role was the lead in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina but was also in 3 installments of HBO’s WHITE HOUSE PLUMBERS.

As for the 98-minute SWEETHEARTS, critical remarks were mixed. Indiewire gave it a B- saying, “What keeps “Sweethearts” enjoyable despite its dips into tedium are Shipka and Hiraga, who both have experience with this type of bawdy straight-to-streaming teen movie and prove more than capable of taking on leading roles themselves.” However, Variety stated, “Though it contains a talented ensemble and compelling sentiments about self-acceptance and platonic friendship, it plays like two half-baked screenplays mashed together, bound by wafer-thin connections.”

Movies_Sweethearts-RTOnly you can say for yourself if the love connection makes the movie worth it. Find it on Max.
