AM I OK?, a film that first premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival starring Dakota Johnson, Sonoya Mizuno, Jermaine Fowler, Kiersey Clemons, and Molly Gordon, with Sean Hayes and Tig Notaro, is parked on Max for your enjoyment. Here is what we know about the work.
It is a comedy-drama directed by Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne and written by Lauren Pomerantz. It is loosely based on Pomerantz’s personal life and her friendship with Jessica Elbaum, who also serves as producer. The 1 hour 27-minute Warner Bros. film, after running the festival circuit, debuted on Max on June 06, 2024.
So, what is it about? Lucy (Johnson) and Jane (Mizuno) have been best friends for most of their lives and think they know everything there is to know about each other. But when Jane announces she’s moving to London, Lucy reveals a long-held secret. As Jane tries to help Lucy, their friendship is thrown into chaos.
We all could probably have guessed even way before seeing the trailer that Lucy was just unsure of how she wanted to identify and how she wanted to carry on in life. Just the question that is this movie’s title gives that away. Just the phrase “Lucy reveals a long-held secret” gives that away as well. Dakota Johnson’s character is struggling with sexual identity at 32; she wants to resolve that neatly and quickly as possible, but that isn’t necessarily how that part of life plays out. It is obvious that Jane, Sonoya Mizuno’s character, is a key component to that realization. It is safe to say that Lucy will get to answer that title question, but our question remains, does AM I OK? play out as a good movie for Max audiences?
Let’s go to the critics for that answer. Well, Variety thought the main role was a stereotypical one – “Johnson plays one of her stereotypical stunted Dakota Johnson characters, the kind of knotted-up-by-neuroses innocent that the talented actor imbues with life even when the surrounding movie lets her down, as it does here.” ABC News, however, thought it a treasure – “Dakota Johnson is aces as a late bloomer coming out in her 30s. The touchingly personal script by Lauren Pomerantz is funny as hell, but it’s her delicacy of feeling that sneaks up and floors you. Something special is going on here. Treasure it.”
RT sums it up as good enough, but remember, like any cinematic work, it is up to what you the viewer think. Find AM I OK? On Max.
