Everyone loves a good Looney Tunes moment, right? The theatrical shorts have been reshown over the decades, and new iterations of the characters have thrived. So, THE DAY THE EARTH BLEW UP: A LOONEY TUNES MOVIE just seems like the perfect thing to do at this point.
Ketchup Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation’s animated adventure made its streaming debut FRIDAY, JUNE 27, exclusively on Max in the U.S. and then on the HBO channel SATURDAY, JUNE 28 at 8:00 p.m. ET. This 91-minute picture holds an interesting distinction. This movie is the first fully animated and theatrically released film in the Looney Tunes franchise, consisting of entirely original material. Yes, there have been other feature-length works, but they have been compilation films, just inserting many theatrical shorts, as well as releasing some direct-to-video pieces.
So, THE DAY THE EARTH BLEW UP could be the beginning of something new. What is the plot of this Looney Tunes feature? A scientist discovers an asteroid heading towards Earth, but then discovers a UFO hurtling alongside it, only to vanish when he goes outside to investigate. We find out that Daffy Duck and Porky Pig fail a home inspection when their landlady, Mrs. Grecht, points out a gigantic hole in their roof (which, as it happens, has been struck by the UFO). With little time to repair their house before it is condemned, the duo is forced to come up with money to pay for the repairs. After being fired from multiple jobs due to Daffy’s antics, the duo come across Petunia Pig, a scientist working at the Goodie Gum factory, trying to find the perfect flavor. She offers the two a job at the factory, and they accept.
But it appears the chewing gum has been contaminated by green goo from the alien invasion, which wreaks havoc on those who eat the gum. Thus, a loony mission to thwart the invasion begins with Daffy & Porky at the lead. But all is not what it seems as the two bumble their way through the chaos. The big question is, is it done in the true, traditional Looney Tunes fashion?
Many say this movie is in the traditional vein, partly because of the laugh-a-minute gaffes & gags but also because of the voice casting. Eric Bauza nails it in the lead as both Daffy Duck and Porky Pig. And the consensus verifies it, as our go-to RT states,
