The story offers a difficult subject, and many say it was masterfully told with bits of humor added delicately to make it more palatable. It hit many of the film festivals and walked away with many honors from most of them, including the ones from Sydney, Seattle, Stockholm, LA, and Cannes. In the movie, we meet Agnes (Victor), a literature professor at a liberal arts college. She lives alone in a quiet, forested area with a gray cat. Her friend Lydie (Ackie) visits from New York City, and together they meet up with friends Natasha (McCormick), Logan (Mendoza), and Devin (Reiss); the five of them are former graduate students and classmates from the college.
Then we recall their school days. Agnes admired her mentor, Professor Preston Decker (Cancelmi). He ends up sexually assaulting her. She confides in Lydie, and they are soon informed that Decker has resigned from his position at the college. When meeting with the college’s disciplinary board, they reveal to Agnes that they can neither investigate nor punish him, as Decker is now no longer under the college’s employ. What then plays out is how Agnes reconciles, copes, and carries on from the incident both at the time and in the years ahead.
