TheTale_LauraDernLaura Dern comes back to HBO in a big, meaningful way. No, sadly she is not returning in ENLIGHTENED and we have yet to get confirmation on her return to BIG LITTLE LIES. What is the project that has raised a lot of talk? It is THE TALE, which will make it to the network as an HBO Films presentation.

The buzz about it all becomes clear when you learn of the plot: Dern plays a journalist and professor who rediscovers a story she wrote at age 13 that depicted a “special” relationship with two adult coaches. She then forces herself to reexamine her first sexual relationship by seeking them out, while also exploring the stories women tell themselves in order to survive. Clearly, it is an important story in light of the #MeToo movement.

It is because of that hot topic and Dern’s performance that this was a must-see film at the Sundance Festival this winter. HBO Films was one of many to bid for rights to it and nabbed if for $7M. HBO doesn’t often go out and buy movies off the festival circuit but apparently saw the relevance of the work. Joining Laura Dern in getting the story told include Elizabeth Debicki, Common and Jason Ritter.

Based on writer-director Jennifer Fox’s real-life experience the HBO Film as the opportunity to make quite an impactful statement. Fox stated to that regard that “It has always been my intent to find an engaged distribution partner who deeply understands the wide reach of the project, not just as a film but also for the impact it can have on a larger global conversation. In a world in which stories like mine have often been pushed into the darkness, no one has been better at shining a light on storytelling and important social issues than HBO.”

We will watch for HBO Films: THE TALE to appear on the schedule.
