Going into its sixth season already? Wow, time flies when you are listening to the pundit with the British accent spout off, right? Of course, we have no clue as to the topics John Oliver will wittily take on in the new season (except about President Trump), thus making this official announcement rather short. It simply states –

LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER will return for its sixth season SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 17 (11:00-11:30pm ET/PT), exclusively on HBO. Presenting a satirical look at the week in news, politics and current events, as well as addressing broader issues, the show received four Primetime Emmys in 2018, including Outstanding Variety Talk Series for the third year in a row.

So, the rest of this post can reflect back on the fifth season of 2018. How many installments did you catch? The season started on 02.18.18 with the NYC Gay Men’s Chorus in attendance and the top topic was…

Other topics upon the start of the season were Italian elections, in the wake of the Parkland shootings he talked about the NRA, Keegan-Michael Key helped him explain cryptocurrencies, had fun with VEEP Mike Pence’s pet rabbit and dealt with children facing immigration courts. In the spring he broached pregnancy centers, tax loopholes, the Iranian nuclear program, Rudy Guiliani and the crazed President of Venezuela all while keeping it jovial with bits like the Catheter Cowboy.

He also uncovered, as the year went on, the dangerously unregulated rehab industry, the rise of elder abuse, the tasks of Robert Mueller, the propaganda engine of Chinese president Xi Jinping, Mexican elections and the fears of gene editing, in that order. Mid-season he sat down with Anita Hill and talked about the rise is workplace sexual harassment and also hit on the topics of trade wars and the travails of Facebook. In the latter part of the year, the Kavanaugh hearings hit and Oliver had something to say as well as talking about Saudi Arabia, migrant families and “draining the swamp.” His last report of the year and the season was on 11.18.18. LAST WEEK TONIGHT focused on the growing number of authoritarian leaders around the world, their common characteristics, and just how many qualities are applicable to President Donald Trump.

Do you want to tackle heady topics like these with a chuckle in your throat? Sure, you do because in these times we need humor to help us along! Sunday nights at 11:00pm is where to get it when LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER returns to HBO.
