The attention the HBO International title, HEATED RIVALRY, has gotten has really melted the ice. The show, out of Canada, has been a solid hit for HBO Max. It was trending as the top series on the streamer, and buzz about it has built to a fever pitch and hasn’t hurt the careers of its lead actors either.

Originally created for Canadian streaming service Crave by award-winning Canadian writer-director-producer Jacob Tierney (Letterkenny), HEATED RIVALRY chronicles the story of rival hockey players Shane and Ilya. Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) are two of the biggest stars in Major League Hockey, bound by ambition, rivalry, and a magnetic pull neither of them fully understands. What begins as a secret fling between two fresh-faced rookies evolves into a years-long journey of love, denial, and self-discovery. Over the next eight years, the pair chase glory on the ice while struggling to navigate their feelings off it. Torn between the sport they live for and the love they can’t ignore, Shane and Ilya must decide if there is room in their fiercely competitive world for something as fragile and as powerful as real love.

Adapted from Rachel Reid’s critically acclaimed “Game Changers” book series, the show captured the dilemma the characters face on and off the ice over six episodes. Episode #1, which debuted on 11.28.25, is entitled “Rookies” and takes us back to 2008, when young hockey players Shane Hollander of Canada and Ilya Rozanov of Russia meet for the first time in a Cup match. Over the course of a few years, they became intimate friends and professional hockey players. The league and the media build them up as rivals on the rink and long-distance clandestine lovers otherwise. Episode #2, “Olympians”, sees their relationship tested HBOInternational_HeatedRivalry-Pic03during the 2014 Winter Olympics. “Hunter” is the title of Episode # 3, which focuses on Scott Hunter (François Arnaud), a close friend of Shane’s, who also seeks out a homosexual relationship that turns out poorly for him. In Episode # 4, entitled “Rose”, Ilya and Shane continue to hook up. In 2015, the Metros won their first cup in sixteen years and defended their title in 2016. When Shane and Ilya are asked by their friends about the person they have been texting for years, both deny any serious relationship. They are still hiding who they truly are in fear of shame and unacceptance. Shane begins to publicly date a gal named Rose Landry (Sophie Nélisse), which hurts Ilya greatly.

As in any penultimate episode, big moments happen. Such is the case in Episode #5 “I’ll Believe In Anything.”  At dinner with Rose, Shane confirms her suspicions and admits he is gay, but they agree to remain friends. At the 2017 All-Star Game, Ilya and Shane reconnect and play on the same team for the first time. When Shane suggests their relationship has deepened beyond casual sex, Ilya insists that Russia and his family would not accept them as a couple and breaks down in Shane’s arms. Some time later, Shane gets injured and asks Ilya to room up with him in a family cottage while he heals. Which takes us to Episode # 6, “The Cottage,” in which we find Scott publicly coming out to little consequence. Thus, eventually Shane & Ilya do the same to their families and friends.

HBOInternational_HeatedRivalry-Pic04-300x200Okay, so HBO is known for pushing hot sex when it can. The hidden erotic nature of this relationship captures the eye for sure, but it also features family issues and the machismo persona in sports, as well.  Shane’s family wants him to make all the right moves and get the best sponsors to improve his image and make him the best in the sport. Ilya’s Russian family just shames him when he loses. This complete story, coupled with the boldness of an intimate relationship, made viewers rave over the telling. So much so that a second season has been greenlit and will be based on “The Long Game” from Reid’s series of books.

So, consider this a bit of a tease. If you haven’t seen HEATED RIVALRY, and you’re not a grossed-out homophobe, then get on the bandwagon or zamboni, I guess, and see what is considered one of the best queer stories out there. Find it on HBO Max.
