HBO’s Westworld Delayed to 2016

Wondering why we haven’t seen a trailer for HBO’s next mega-smash hit Westworld?  So were we. Until we stumbled upon an interview with THR today where HBO’s programming chief Michael Lombardo gave us an update admitting that Westworld will miss its 2015 premiere date promise:

“The pilot is a really powerful starting point, but when you’re doing a series, you go, ‘OK, so what’s the next episode? What’s bringing you in?’ You can’t just be a spectacle every week.”

Wait, who doesn’t want a spectacle every week!? It doesn’t look like Westworld will be premiering this year.  But if not Q4 2015 then when? Late Winter of 2016 seems to be wide open for HBO now that True Detective has slipped into the summer.  Spring is jam-packed with Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley and Veep so that’s almost out of the question.

Let’s hope HBO and the show-runners of Westworld can get something together in time for an early 2016 release date otherwise we’re probably looking at Fall of 2016 for an air window.

So what WILL air in 2015 on HBO? We’ve confirmed The Leftovers Season 2 as well as David Simon’s new miniseries.  But doesn’t HBO need a major drama to continue to build momentum for it’s new service, HBO Now through the fall?  With Boardwalk Empire, True Blood and The Newsroom now ended, it’s starting to feel a bit sparse as far as dramatic flagship series go over at the Home Box Office. Perhaps Scorsese’s music feature will be fast tracked in time for 2015?  It doesn’t seem likely but at this point it’s our only hope.

How do you feel about the Westworld delay? Are you disappointed? Are you happy that they’re taking their time to make it a great show?  Give us your pitchforks thoughts.

“You can’t just be a spectacle every week.”?? Pff. Let’s just agree to disagree, Mr. Lombardo.

Makes it even more impressive that GoT always holds its schedule!

It’s fine; make the best show you can make. I agree that it probably isn’t news and the july film date implied a 2016 airdate.
Scorseses project was greenlit in december and I guess they didn’t have to wait till summer to film (like Westworld?), so I hope they can take Newsroom’s spot!
However, a name(!) and a trailer should then be seen in the next 2 month..

Scorsese’s project is filming in the summer as well.

If all goes well, it may end up taking Boardwalk Empire’s old spot, paired with The Leftovers.

Yes, you’re right..
A october release is still possible, hoping for a may/june film start :/

The only alternative, 1-hour drama-wise, for late 2015 I have in mind is the 6-episode miniseries Crime with Turturro.
(Right now Fincher is busy with his “videosynchrazies”, don’t know whether Utopia is in the can)

Videosynchrazies has halted production for now.

With regards to Scorsese’s one, it’ll only be out next year. If they start filming in the summer (July), with 9 episodes, it’ll be a while before they wrap. Post-production will be a while, and I think they’ll set it for Boardwalk Empire’s old spot next year.

Come to think of it, this show was never advertised to be out this year in HBO’s Year Ender promo.

Even now that videosynchrazies halted its production, Fincher won’t have time for Utopia..
Like I said, the exception would be: it’s already filmed!

Utopia’s done filming without a single casting announcement out? No way. Doubt if Gillian Flynn’s even finished the scripts.

Yes, obviously… sorry, my mistake!

Back to the speculation: Anything but Crime that is a possibility for late 2015?

Not a problem. :)

There’s David Simon’s “Show me a Hero” miniseries that’s set to premiere in August.

For a returning show, there’s The Leftovers in the fall.

Aww right, Leftovers could start after Show Me a Hero – would be Sept. 27th to Nov 29th.

Set to begin filming in July. An HBO show generally finishes production for the entire season atleast 3-5 months before the first episode airs. Going by this schedule, they’d have never met the 2015 airdate.

But it does give them a lot of time in getting everything right before going ahead. And they could launch it alongside GoT’s sixth season, which is probably what they intended.

Where would it fit in during the GoT season? Silicon Valley and Veep have been following that for a few years. I don’t think they are going to change that. It seems more likely they will give it True Detectives original position. Start in January and pretty much pass the baton to GoT when it starts.

But will that be enough time to get it all right?
