Okay, this posting can be debatable on whether it fits on the HBOWatch site or not. It is a 4-minute promotional ad regarding the film industry of Texas. It seems the Lone Star State wants to cash in on being the New Hollywood. But what makes this advertisement so cool is who stars in it and who directed it.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have reprised their roles as detectives Rust Cohle and Marty Hart in essence for the promo. Well, it is the TRUE DETECTIVE characters and it isn’t. Let’s explain before you see it. They not only look, dress, and sound like Rust & Marty but they’ve got a handcuffed criminal in the back seat. But Matthew calls his partner Woody throughout and they are not talking ugly crimes up a new day for filmmaking. Helping them do so are the talents of Billy Bob Thornton, Renée Zellweger and the cuffed dude in the back is Dennis Quaid; True Texans all.
Equally cool is that the ad was written and directed by the TRUE DETECTIVE creator himself – Nic Pizzolatto. Yeah, and you can tell he wrote it just because of certain turns of phrases uttered, especially by McConaughey. For example, he calls Holywood a ‘flat circle.’ His demeanor and tone are solid Rust Cohle as if the actor was just itching to play him again.
I’m itching for him to play Cohle again, enough to watch this ad more than once and I don’t even care whether Texas becomes a film capital or not. So, what do you say, are you glad I brought this to your attention here if you weren’t already aware of it, or not? I thought it was cool. I’d thought TRUE DECTIVE fans would appreciate seeing these two in character again but in a totally different manner. I thought it would harken you back to the day when we were all glued to the first season of Pizzolatto’s anthology show. TRUE DETECTIVE is alive and well, especially after Season 4’s NIGHT COUNTRY and it looks like, even some sort of meta way Cohle & Hart are still a part of it.
