ConfederateControversy-300x174HBO has had it rough lately. A GAME OF THRONE episode gets illegally released early and HBO itself get hacked for starters. The site VOX has a good breakdown of what the hacking entailed and even a few points about what has yet to be known on the matter that has the FBI investigating. Check it out for details regarding stolen content and more.

Also developing has been backlash regarding the intended series CONFEDERATE. We reported just recently that the series will be the next for David Benioff and D. B. Weiss after GAME OF THRONES. As stated it takes place in an alternate timeline, where the Southern states successfully have seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution. People are calling the idea an insensitive commentary to the African-American struggle by glorifying slavery. Philly.com stated that Temple University Assistant Professor of Religion Nyasha Junior said it was “disappointing that HBO would spend this kind of time and energy on a show created by two white men to indulge in this fantasy of modern-day enslavement.”

CaseyBloys_TCA2017-300x206Casey Bloys, HBO’s Programming Chief, spent some time at the latest TCA panel defending the series:

“If I could do it over again, our mistake  — HBO’s mistake, not the producers’ — was thinking that we would be able to announce an idea that was so sensitive and require so much care in a press release. I hope that people will judge the actual material, not how it could be or might be. We will rise and fall based on the material.”

He went on to say, “The producers have said they’re not looking to do Gone With the Wind 2017. It’s not whips and plantations. It’s what they imagine a modern-day institution of slavery would look like. These four writers, [which include Malcolm and Nichelle Tramble Spellman,  who are black] are at the top of their game — they can do anything they want, and this is what they feel passionate about. I’ll bet on that [this] is a risk worth taking.”

Are people being over-sensitive? Amazon has an alternative history program, Man In The High Castle, in which Nazism comes to America and it is acceptable fiction. Should CONFEDERATE pussyfoot around the issue or go ahead as planned? What do you think?
