Straight from WBD press releases we find that HBO Sports is working on two big sports stories for the network. One is a deep-dive into the United States Men’s National Soccer Team and the other is a focus on the 18-time National Basketball Association (NBA) champion Boston Celtics.
HBO Sports Documentaries and Park Stories in association with the U.S. Soccer Federation and the U.S. National Soccer Team Players Association are currently in production on a documentary series chronicling the United States Men’s National Soccer Team (USMNT) in the leadup to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The series will air on HBO and will be available to stream on Max in 2026.
The sports documentary series will provide an unprecedented look into the U.S. Men’s National Team, following them over four years as they prepare for the largest sporting event of all time. After an impressive performance at the 2022 Men’s World Cup in Qatar, the team, led by renowned manager Mauricio Pochettino, will play on home soil during the 2026 World Cup hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. This historic event will be the first FIFA World Cup to feature 48 teams with matches spanning across 16 venues in North America.
The other title of interest here is said to arrive sometime very soon.
HBO Sports Documentaries, Ringer Films and Words + Pictures are currently in production on CELTICS CITY, a multipart documentary series on the 18-time National Basketball Association (NBA) champion Boston Celtics. The series reunites executive producers Bill Simmons and Connor Schell for the first time since they co-created the iconic series “30 for 30.” Directed by Emmy winner Lauren Stowell, the series will debut on HBO and will be available to stream on Max in 2025.
CELTICS CITY chronicles the history, cultural impact, and extraordinary tale of the NBA’s winningest and most storied franchise, the Boston Celtics, the current 2024 NBA Champion. The series contains extensive, never-before-seen archives and more than 80 interviews of past and present Boston Celtics legends – from Bob Cousy and Larry Bird to Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Simmons stated, “There’s no story quite like the Boston Celtics. Everything went right for 40 years, then nothing went right, then suddenly, things started going right again. But beyond the 18 titles and all the legends and memories, the team’s connection to the city and almost a century of American history was the most compelling piece for us. This story is bigger than basketball, and yet, it’s everything you ever loved about basketball, too.”
We pass on this message because it is nice to see that HBO Sports is still working hard to present sports programming other than just HARD KNOCKS.
