HBO is looking ahead to its summer lineup and while they are at it they want to build up a bit of atmosphere, you know, to set a mood. Promotional footage for the HBO limited series THE NIGHT OF has begun. Below we refresh your memory about the work and share the two clips released regarding.
We tracked this piece from way back when it was CRIMINAL JUSTICE with Gandolfini; then CRIME with De Niro and then John Tuturro taking the lead. One last title change gave us THE NIGHT OF. The eight-part limited series is created by Steven Zaillian and Richard Price and debuts SUNDAY, JULY 10 at 9:00pm. Starring John Turturro and Riz Ahmed, and directed by Zaillian from teleplays by Price and Zaillian, THE NIGHT OF delves into the intricacies of a complex New York City murder case with cultural and political overtones. The story examines the police investigation, the legal proceedings, the criminal justice system and the feral purgatory of Rikers Island, where the accused await trial for felony crimes.
Just what the issues are and what the exact nature of the crime entails are mysteries to be learned, but a thorough examination of the process from start to finish will make a complete story by the time the series concludes. To get us in the right frame of mind comes
— Autopsy Vignette.
In the description of the series it mentions a “New York City murder case” and this must be the victim. If you recall an earlier post that offered The Tease then you already know what she looks like and the young man she was with. As we go to the morgue the body appears to be this younger woman and by looking at the extended hand she was not murdered for her jewelery. It is unclear, however, how she died although there does seem to be plenty of blood marks on the cadaver. It also appears as if we will be walked through a detailed autopsy to discover exactly what befell her. Whatever it was we know it has large repercussions. And as our next clip shows it holds repercussions for three young men somehow caught in the thick of it.
How many were involved in this crime? Who actually committed the deed? What twists and turns and perhaps misdirections will lead us to think one way only to be shocked at the final reveal? So, how about that? Has the mood been effectively set? What happened that night? All will be revealed in THE NIGHT OF coming July 10.
