The results are in for the television & streaming shows that are eligible to receive an Emmy Award on September 17. HBO once again has strong representation with a few happy surprises mixed in with the expected nominations for GAME OF THRONES and WESTWORLD. Via an official HBO press release here are the nominated shows, cast & crews from our network of choice.
GAME OF THRONES received 22 nominations, tied for the most of any program, while WESTWORLD received 21 nominations, BARRY received 13 nominations and LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER received 9 nominations. Here is the breakdown:
* 22 nominations for GAME OF THRONES including Outstanding Drama Series, 2 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage), Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Lena Headey), Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series (Diana Rigg), 2 for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Jeremy Podeswa, Alan Taylor) and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series (David Benioff, D.B. Weiss).
* 21 nominations for WESTWORLD including Outstanding Drama Series, 2 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright), Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series (Evan Rachel Wood), Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Thandie Newton) and Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series (Jimmi Simpson).

* 5 nominations for HBO Documentary Films: THE DEFIANT ONES including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series and Outstanding Writing for a Nonfiction Program (Allen Hughes, Lasse Jarvi, Doug Pray).
* 5 nominations for FAHRENHEIT 451 including Outstanding Television Movie.
* 4 nominations for CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Larry David) and 2 for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series (Bryan Cranston, Lin-Manuel Miranda).
* 3 nominations for HBO Documentary Films: THE ZEN DIARIES OF GARRY SHANDLING including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special and Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program (Judd Apatow).
* 2 nominations for HBO Documentary Films: IF YOU’RE NOT IN THE OBIT, EAT BREAKFAST.
* 2 nominations for INSECURE including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Issa Rae).
* 2 nominations for HBO Films: PATERNO including Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special (Barry Levinson).
* 2 nominations for HBO Films: THE TALE including Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie (Laura Dern).
* 2 nominations for TRACEY ULLMAN’S SHOW including Outstanding Variety Sketch Series.

I not sure why HBO did not include all the details for each entry. For example, even GOT did not have all 22 noms listed, Issa Rae for INSECURE is listed way at the bottom of the list and any specifics for BALLERS or VICE PRINCIPALS got clumped in a “and others” paragraph. The good news is at least they were all nominated. The bad news is not all of these nominees are going to win their categories. In some instances, HBO performers will be competing against each other and others so not everyone is going to win and, besides it is never a clean sweep for any network anyway.
The other bad news to note is that HBO, for the first time in 17l years, is not taking the top honors of racking up the most nominees that honor was taken from them this year by…Netflix which has 112 nominations to HBO 108. The big rivalry is definitely on. We will see how it all plays on when the Primetime Emmy Awards airs on September 17.
