Not only did Olson (pictured on left)agree to lead the legal team that would challenge Prop 8, he made a surprising recommendation for his co-counsel: David Boies (to Olsen’s right in picture), the attorney who opposed him in Bush v. Gore. Although they held dramatically different be

Expectations: Usually I don’t lay on so heavy with the Overview, but for this documentary I used a large portion of the provided Press Release because it sums up not just the film but the entire issue very well. Everything is clearly spelled out here leaving no surprises. The issue at hand is one of equality and illustrates the course of actions taken to overturn the controversial ruling in Proposition Eight. It will in its 113 minutes give us all the facts, the players, and the proceedings that led to this decision and surely the consequences for the LGBT community. Also it surely does not get its accolades just because of the subject matter but also because it is a well constructed film as well. Here is a preview:
Gut Reactions: The documentary is truly for anyone interested in civil liberties; the mechanics of the justice and legal systems, sociology and people who support or are of the LGBT community. Keep in mind that the few paragraphs I present here are not to debate the issue (we can gladly do that in the Comments below) but to shed light on what this documentary offers.
Ben Cotner and Ryan White had the forethought to chronicle this issue knowing full well that it would be an explosive topic as it was debated in court. The majority of this film is not cobbled together news footage but them on the scene filming as it happened and taking five years to put together. Of course, they were right; it continues to prove to be big news as this same-sex marriage issue comes up in state after state. They have concisely documented the topic and no one, by film’s end, will be confused about what took place in either society or in the courtroom.
The player’s in this piece, as you would expect, are passionate about the cause. This is about their lives and their happiness. They get forefront attention here. The whole Prop 8 story is their story. It is more their story than the protesters on the steps of court and in the streets. The plaintiffs in the case represent their demographic well here. They explain their feelings of frustration and joy effectively without bogging down the documentary with the history of the Gay Movement. This clip gives us a sense of their side of the story.
In Conclusion: Whether or not you believe that same-sex marriage is acceptable at the very least you should support the notion that everyone is entitled to that whole ‘pursuit of happiness’ thing, right? Depending on which side of the fence you sit dictates what you will feel at the conclusion of the piece. Those truly offended probably didn’t even watch it; those in support are elated that the tide is turning in their favor and the rest of us are still debating I guess. Regardless, THE CASE AGAINST 8 is a solid piece of film work and illustrates the champion cause for equality for all is a battle worth winning.
