HBO has now offered up a press release regarding the upcoming limited series THE NIGHT OF. That is the work that was a pet project post-SOPRANOS for the late James Gandolfini and now has evolved into a eight episode piece for John Turturro. We caught a glimpse of it in the Winter Preview from a few weeks ago so we knew it had to make the schedule sooner or later. It has taken a long time to gestate with all the changes in lead role and titles, but now it is about to make to air, though no definite airdate is given yet. Here is the official Press Release:

Steven Zaillian

The eight-part HBO limited series production THE NIGHT OF, created by Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List, American Gangster) and Richard Price ( HBO’s THE WIRE), will debut this summer, exclusively on HBO. Starring John Turturro (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) and Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler), and directed by Steven Zaillian from teleplays by Price and Zaillian, the limited series delves into the intricacies of a complex New York City murder case with cultural and political overtones. The story examines the police investigation, the legal proceedings, the criminal justice system and the feral purgatory of Rikers Island, where the accused await trial for felony crimes.

THE NIGHT OF is executive produced by Steven Zaillian, Richard Price, Jane Tranter (HBO’s GETTING ON and ROME), James Gandolfini (HBO’s WARTORN: 1861-2010 and ALIVE DAY MEMORIES: HOME FROM IRAQ) and Peter Moffat (HBO Films: EINSTEIN AND EDDINGTON); co-executive produced by Garrett Basch (Life Itself), Nancy Sanders (HBO FILMS: HEMINGWAY & GELLHORN) and Mark Armstrong (HBO Films: HEMINGWAY & GELLHORN). Mark A. Baker (Damages) produced part 1; Scott Ferguson (HBO Films: THE NORMAL HEART) produced parts 2-8. Steven Zaillian directed parts 1-3 and 5-8; James Marsh (The Theory of Everything) directed part 4.

The limited series’ ensemble cast includes Michael Kenneth Williams (HBO’s BOARDWALK EMPIRE and HBO Films: BESSIE), Bill Camp (12 Years a Slave, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), Jeannie Berlin (Inherent Vice), Poorna Jagannathan (Thanks for Sharing), Payman Maadi (A Separation), Glenne Headly (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), Amara Karan (The Darjeeling Limited), Sofia Black-D’Elia (The Immigrant), Paul Sparks (HBO’s BOARDWALK EMPIRE), Ben Shenkman ( HBO’s ANGELS IN AMERICA), Afton Williamson (CINEMAX’s BANSHEE), Paulo Costanzo (Road Trip), Ned Eisenberg (Last Man Standing), Mohammad Bakri (Laila’s Birthday), Nabil Elouahabi (Zero Dark Thirty), Ashley Thomas (The Man Inside), Glenn Fleshler (A Most Violent Year), Chip Zien (United 93) and Max Casella (HBO’s VINYL).

THE NIGHT OF was filmed in and around Manhattan; based on the BBC series Criminal Justice, created by Peter Moffat. The film is produced by Filmrights and BBC Worldwide Productions for HBO.

Now we know that is just mostly the obligatory name dropping so we’ll add some paragraphs from an earlier Post to give more detail. It was written in 2012 but it still reflects the version coming up later this year.

[box] “The show comes to the U. S. from an award winning 2008 United Kingdom production and HBO has granted a pilot order for the idea that hopefully translates into another series for Mr. G. The original series consisted of two five-episode seasons. HBO’s version follows the plot of the first season of the BBC series. If that is the case than the other HBO show considered by Gandolfini, BIG DEAD PLACE, which was an Antarctica based story, is not happening. He was last on HBO in the HBO FILM: CINEMA VERITE in 2011. In this new work Mr. G plays Jack Stone, a disheveled jailhouse lawyer wearing cheap suits and sandals, who trolls for clients at police precincts. The show ends up chronicling the journey of those clients as they deal with the criminal justice system. Each season would feature new characters and cast. The first season’s story features an American-born Pakistani named Naz. He is a young man who takes his father’s cab for a drive and picks up a party girl who takes him to her apartment for a drunken and drug-filled night out. When he wakes up in the morning, Ben finds the girl stabbed to death and, though he can’t remember committing the crime, he is soon charged with it. Taking on his case is Jack Stone.” [/box]

Well get more details to you when we can.

I don’t know why the above press release is incomplete, so I will say this.
Veteran (40 years) actor, Jeff Wincott, (Unstoppable, Sons of Anarchy, The Lizzie Borden Chronicles) is in 5 episodes as Detective Lucas. That’s 3 more episodes than several actors listed in your article. Please try listing all cast in order of their screen time, and take into account their experience, also. Thank you.

Let me clarify a couple of things here if I may.

First, this site is not affiliated with HBO, merely a fan site. Thankfully, we are issued Press Releases from HBO and we reprint them, like the one above, in their entirety as they are given to us.

Secondly, no presser is going to include the entire listing of everyone involved in a project, because it is lengthy if everyone is included. See the comment above now wanting the composer credited. These types of pieces will not include entire cast & crew because not everyone is interested in all those details (even though deserved) and just makes such a release to wordy, thus losing people’s interest.

How it is decided who gets listed in such a filing is completely beyond me. Maybe it has to do with the actor’s agent insisting that so and so gets placement in such an article as the one above. Regardless such releases are worded the way they are and presented the way they are.

Nice to know you are sticking up for your favorite actor or relative like that though.

Thanks for the response Jef. I got in touch with a media director at HBO and we are working things out. Keep up the great work on this site.

I heard “of the night “will air in summer. if it airs in the summer with ballers and vice principals ……. I am wondering if West World gets push to the fall?

HBO is being very tight-lipped about everything.the press release states a Summer debut and that is it. As for WESTWORLD there is no official word. Once most get engrossed in GOT what comes next will be forgotten for a while.

In all likelihood, yes. GoT ends on June 26. There’s a break a week after, for Fourth of July.

If ‘The Night Of’ starts on July 10, they’d run until August 28 (8 episodes). Leaving Westworld free to kickoff on September 4.

Think The Young Pope’s better suited for the end of the year, starting in mid-November & end in mid-December. Sorta like how it was with Angels in America.
