We learn that Pete Holmes is a busy boy since he last filmed an HBO special. We caught him in December 2016 in PETE HOLMES: FACES AND SOUNDS (surprisingly we didn’t review that one). Well, he is still doing those faces and making those sounds in DIRTY CLEAN which debuted on December 15, 2018 at 10:00pm.

He fit the televised routine in between seasons of CRASHING, getting married and having a baby daughter. It was taped at a performance at the Aladdin Theatre in Portland, Oregon in November and touched on themes like the mechanisms of consciousness, the afterlife and Elon Musk, as well as sharing a few thoughts on being a new dad. He also gives us his take on things we’ve pondered over before like in the clip below.

What Holmes offers is an okay hour of stand-up. Yeah, just okay. There is one thing he does that I caught in both specials now that kind of trips me up. He laughs at his own jokes sometimes even before he gets through to the punchline and often, he is the loudest one laughing. Are you here to amuse yourself most? Now, you want a comedian to have a good time and enjoy the set and the feedback gotten from the audience. The routine really flows when it’s like that, but almost every time Holmes slips into one of his voices he breaks up before he even gets the words out of his mouth. Sometimes what is funny is him thinking it’s the funniest thing going as he works through it. In his opening salvo what is funny is him cracking up over saying ‘lululemon’ more than the point of the joke – just sayin’.

He does, however, keep the audience engaged and offers some good bits in his set. As his title suggests some of it is ‘clean’ humor as he talks about handling his infant, and explaining that genius Elon Musk is still just as low-tech as the rest of us because even he squats over a bowl of water daily. He also talks ‘dirty’ about his wife’s titties (and she’s okay with it) addictive pornography and even lets a few f-bombs fly. Does he say ‘fuck’ just for the sake of getting some ‘dirty’ elements into his special?

Pete Holmes also has some interactive fun with his audience. I didn’t expect the brain exercises he does with them, but I guess this sort of science interests him as he delves into it in a podcast, which I didn’t know he had. Anyway, he gets them on the topic of the afterlife and brain skills. Anyway, he gets them on the topic of the afterlife and brain skills. It was unexpected and I’m not sure how effective but it was nice to know in the quirky way he thinks of scientific things like that.

Pete Holmes is a little bit clean and a little bit dirty and you can catch him at it on HBO platforms now.
