With only a few more years until HBO’s epic series Game of Thrones, reaches its end, many have hoped for a spin-off show in the future. The idea isn’t necessarily unprecedented– the incredibly popular show, The Walking Dead has recently debuted a spin-off series; similarly, Better Call Saul, which takes viewers back to the world of Breaking Bad is almost finished with a successful second season. Spin-off series are all the rage it seems, and for networks, these shows offer an almost guaranteed promise of revenue from a large pool of already existing fans. Nevertheless,  according to recent reports by Entertainment Weekly, we shouldn’t be planning on another show set in Westeros anytime soon.

According to EW, HBO’s programming president Michael Lombardo, was firm in assuring us that a Game of Thrones spin-off series was something that neither the show writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were interested in, nor author of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, upon which the show is based, George R.R. Martin. Although a Thrones spin-0ff would almost certainly be easy money, Lombardo continued, acknowledging that there’s lots of source material to work from but saying that unless a particular concept was creatively inspiring, it probably wouldn’t happen:

“There are plenty of characters, secondary characters, [that] you could build a world around. We’re always going to be drawn to a strong creative vision. But we are not going to do that unless we feel their passion.”

With Game of Thrones beginning to reach its end (the sixth season begins next week, and it is generally agreed upon that the show will consist of eight seasons), it’s a sad thought that we might have to bid the cinematic world of Westeros goodbye forever. Hopefully, the writers of the show will find something that sparks their interest.

What would you like to see a Game of Thrones spin-off about? We speculated years ago about a possible Dunk and Egg series. Either way the real show is starting April 24th at 9PM.
