Game of Thrones Producer Says Series May Last Seven Seasons

Last week, Game of Thrones took home the BAFTA Audience Award. However, that’s not the only news from the night. ‘Thrones Producer Frank Doelger spoke to Radio Times after the awards show and had some interesting things to say about the future of HBO’s hit series:

“[The number of series] is being discussed as we speak. The third season was the first half of book three, season four will be the second part of book three. George RR Martin has written books four and five; six and seven are pending.”

“I would hope that, if we all survive, and if the audience stays with us we’ll probably get through to seven seasons.”

I’m sure most fans are ecstatic to hear that the series will last four more seasons, but I’m a little skeptical that it can be done in that time frame. After all, we don’t know what will be included in Books 6 & 7. One of them could possibly be another A Storm of Swords that requires two seasons to film. I’ll leave speculation as to whether this will work or not for another time, but feel free to chime in with your opinion in the comments below.

I’m hopeful for more than 7….9? 10? If the production values and excellent acting/casting/writing can keep up, I for one will enjoy the series for a long time. Had a great time doing a season 1 & 2 marathon to get ready for season 3, and will probably do it again next year.
Keep up the great work!

The last two books are a mess and little of them move the plot forward. They can be condensed in a single season.

I would like to see it go to at least 7 but I have to agree with other posters in questioning the ability to tell the full story in that time frame. Consider other fan favorite sci-fi/fantasy genre TV series. There are few that make it past 6 seasons, not to mention many that fail in the ratings in the 3rd and 4th seasons causing the network to lose interest. I will keep hanging on the hope that we get to see the entire series on television, whether it is book faithful or not. I have invested too much to ditch it before “The End”.

They might also just cut out entire storylines and characters from the story. I could see cutting out the Prince of Dorne storyline from Feast of Crows; it was pretty pointless.

Ya i feel you about how the prince of Dorne storyline didn’t really go far, but i think that Doran Martell will hatch a really awesome intricate scheme for revenge against the crown and Lanisters…

Perhaps if the series catches up to the books after season 7, the next logical step is feature films. Each book as a trilogy?

i hope they stretch it out longer. they have the best material for a tv series ever so they should slow down. book1/ season 1 was great but there were still many aspects missing and could of lasted for 15 episodes. even though it means we have to wait longer for episodes, it’ll be a crime to rush thru and finish prematurely,

This is just for now, you may never know things change and they will add more. Happens most of the time if not always.

Need more than 10 week seasons, go for at least 16 weeks.

I don’t think that’s possible, given the amount of time they put into production, plus all of the location shooting with the various crews.

I really don’t think 7 will be enough. I was thinking more like 8 or 9, but it’s rare for an HBO series to last that long. Also, the quote is rather vague. “Get through to seven seasons” could mean at least that many. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Some of the actors will be too old to play their parts (Bran is already looking too old) & I will miss the originals, but no problem I will adapt to watch ALL the series!!!

I only see this finishing in seven seasons if they make up their own stuff at the end versus actually following the books. They have made some changes to the series, however its nothing that ruins the overall story. The 4/5th book is going to take 3-4 seasons in my opinion. Feast of Crows is pretty small, but features more secondary characters. The Dance of dragons has all the major players in and both those books are going on at the same time (as we know he broke the 4th book into two parts since it was so large). The 6th and 7th books are suppose to be quite large (from Martins mouth). I would imagine he would have the 6th done before they run out of material from the 4th and 5th books. The 7th book is one that worries me unless he gives them the general story that he is wanting to tell. Guess we will wait and see. I think realistically you would be looking at 8-10 seasons.

At the rate the show is going, I have serious doubts about it being possible to finish in seven seasons (as appropriate as that would be) without seriously cutting a lot of material. Obviously they’ll show A Feast For Crows and A Dance With Dragons in parallel rather than subsequently, and a lot of the cut material will probably be from AFFC, and hopefully some of Dany’s stuff in ADWD.

But still, if it has taken three seasons to portray two and a half books…to finish the whole thing in seven while including the gargantuan AFFC, ADWD, and what will surely be large, climactic volumes in the form of The Winds Of Winter and A Dream of Spring, seems very ambitious.

Since I’ve read all of the books so far, I sure would like to see some more. I can not wait for the next books. How far into book three ? To the wedding of the King? Can’t wait for that one .
