It’s hard to believe that we are just three days from the one year anniversary of Game of Thrones‘ summery premiere of its seventh and penultimate season, but while it has now been an officially long time since we saw a fresh glimpse of Westeros on our screens, the show has not been forgotten by fans, HBO, or the esteemed organizers of the Emmys. Yesterday was not only another GOT anniversary, with fans celebrating the seventh year of the publication of George R.R. Martin’s “A Dance with Dragons,” but also the day that the official nominations for 2018’s upcoming Emmy Awards were announced. Game of Thrones has twenty-two nominations overall, with plenty of opportunities to win an award or two (or twenty-two!) for its “excellent television programming.”
Notably, the Lannister family is well represented with Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) up for Outstanding Supporting Actress, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) and Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) competing for Outstanding Supporting Actor. Diana Rigg (Olenna Tyrell) is also nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress, and she definitely deserves the recognition! In addition to several nominations for technical skill of all kinds, Thrones could also win an award for its score, brought to us by the talented Ramin Djawadi. Djawadi has two chances to score an Emmy this year, thanks to his similarly exceptional work for HBO’s Westworld. We wish the show, and all of those involved in bringing it to life, great success at the awards ceremony this September.
Meanwhile, while Game of Thrones continues to receive praise for its past seasons, its final and upcoming eighth season has finally finished filming. While HBO has yet to confirm that the Thrones crew has officially packed up their cameras, reports from those in Belfast assert that the show has almost entirely cleared out of its main sets, and most actors and actresses have made it clear that they have finished filming once and for all. Notably, Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) marked the bittersweet end of her years with Thrones via an Instagram post, writing “goodbye belfast. goodbye arya. goodbye game of thrones. what a joy i’ve had. here’s to the adventures to come.”
Earlier, Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) also took to Instagram to post a heartfelt goodbye. The cast got a chance to say more intimate farewells at another wrap party which had most of the actors from the show in attendance, not to mention the show-runners, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
HBO has still not announced a 2019 premiere date for Game of Thrones Season Eight, but if you’re reading this, you’re probably feeling a little sad that this epic journey is coming to an end so soon. But don’t despair! HBO has wasted no time in implementing its plans for future programming set in the wonderful world of Westeros. Reports indicate that the Game of Thrones prequel series will begin filming its pilot later this year. News is still scarce when it comes to many details about the prequel and when it will air, but we will continue to keep you in the loop as the new series progresses in its development. It’s just a relief to know that even if Game of Thrones is ending, we will still have a way to get our fill of a beautiful fantastical world, compelling characters, and, of course, dragons and/or lots of bloodshed.
