George R. R. Martin is in collaboration with HBO to create a sci-fi drama work under the title of CAPTAIN COSMOS!
At first I thought this a belated April Fool’s Day joke when the above bit of news came to our attention. Mr. Martin, creator of the “The Song Of Fire & Ice” series of fantasy novels, cannot even finish his current project let alone ramp up something new, so surely this wasn’t true. It wasn’t until we recalled that George was indeed in a first-look development deal with Home Box Office to create new material that it dawned on us that this could be fact. Another hint that he is carving time out to work on the new venture is that Martin is not involved in writing any screenplays for the latest season of GAME OF THRONES.
So just what is CAPTAIN COSMOS? Entertainment Weekly tells us the following:
Martin does have one other previously undisclosed project on his plate, but it’s not one that will take up too much of his time. We can exclusively reveal that the author is developing a new series at HBO called Captain Cosmos. The pitch: “At the dawn of the age of TV in 1949, a visionary young writer creates a science fiction series that tells stories no one else will dare to tell.” The pilot is being written by Michael Cassutt (of Syfy’s Z Nation).
Now it has been heavily reported, as the above link indicates, that he is working on the sixth installment of his book series and avid readers of GAME OF THRONES original source material are happy for that. At this point it appears he is the executive producer of CAPTAIN COSMOS only. Seemingly others will come on board to run, write and direct the show if it goes forward. By the scant pitch above it appears the show could be an anthology series all from the mind of the fictional young writer mentioned. We will have to see what more comes from this project in the months ahead.
