HBO’s Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, was out at a presser recently and announced that some big series were locked into new seasons in the years ahead. A couple of them came as a surprise because I had the sense that they were limited series, that were one season only, then done. Here is a quick listing of which series have gotten the greenlight to proceed.

The show currently has a perfect 100 Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes and is described as “absurdly funny” by The New York Times and “delightfully unhinged” by The Hollywood Reporter; TV Guide called it “the funniest show of the year,” and Decider heralded it as “an absolute triumph.” The series continues to pace as HBO’s top freshman comedy in platform history, with the season averaging 3.3 million (L+3) U.S. cross-platform viewers and growing.
I LOVE LA. Also enjoying a solid and acclaimed run is Rachel Sennott’s little Gen Z story. It has a good five episodes left to air through December 21, but has also been picked up for a second season. Her character, Maia, gets to run around the environs of Los Angeles with her besties – Charlie (Jordan Firstman), Dylan (Josh Hutcherson), Alani (True Whitaker), and Tallulah (Odessa A’zion). L. A. will be their playground again sometime in late 2026 or into 2027.

Of these two comedy shows, Amy Gravitt, EVP, HBO Programming, Head of HBO & HBO Max Comedy Series, said, “We’re thrilled by the incredible response to THE CHAIR COMPANY and I LOVE LA debuts. Both shows confidently carry on the HBO comedy tradition in their own singular way. We couldn’t be happier to continue collaborating with Tim, Zach, Rachel, and their exceptional teams.”

From the world of Westeros comes an endearing tale centered on the adventures of an unexpected duo. Season one cast includes Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg. They must really believe in the quality & strength of this series. The nature of this new show allows for a quicker turnaround vs. fellow prequel HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, new season every 2 years. HBO‘s Head of Drama Series and Films, Francesca Orsi, told Deadline in February that Ser Duncan’s story is done on a smaller, more “intimate” scale than the other Game of Thrones series. She also confirmed that the show is still on track for a three-season run spanning Martin’s three Dunk and Egg books.

We always heard via Ryan Condal that this prequel series was only meant to have a total of four seasons, so we’ll see out the last of this one starring Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, or Ewan Mitchell. Or will we? Bloys said recently, “For all of [our] shows, we generally try to leave it to the creators to make that decision. We’ll work with them. Sometimes, people will work through the season to feel like, ‘Does it feel like a natural end? Does it not?’ So, I don’t have updates for you on any of that. But when we do, I’ll let you know.” I guess it remains to be seen.
Francesca Orsi, EVP, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, has the last word here. She said, “We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the Game of Thrones universe. Together, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R. R. Martin’s universe continues to be. In January, I think audiences will be delighted by the inspiring underdog tale of Dunk and Egg that George and Ira Parker have so beautifully captured. And this Summer, House of the Dragon is set to ignite once again with some of its most epic battles yet.”

As expected, Francesca Orsi had something to say about it at the recent presser. She mentioned, “We knew well in advance of its launch that we had a powerful drama series on our hands, but it has been so rewarding to witness the audience’s fervor and embrace of this show as it grew week after week. Rarely does a writer balance humanistic storytelling with intricate, explosive plotting, but Brad Ingelsby is one of our industry’s greats, and we have no doubt he will strike as profoundly and addictively once again in Season 2.”
“We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have HBO’s unwavering support of Task from the very first script onwards, throughout production, and during their extraordinary launch of our first season to audiences. They are an unmatched creative home,” said Ingelsby. “On behalf of the entire Task team, in front of and behind the camera, I am honored and excited to get back to work on a second season of our show.”
We are excited for TASK and all the listed shows here. Enjoy them on HBO & HBO Max, now and in the years ahead.
