First Clips from the Final Season of True Blood

HBO surprised us all with a very full Easter Sunday this year.  While some networks took a break the Home Box Office kept its foot firmly on the gas pedal with new episodes of “Game of Thrones,” “Veep,” and “Silicon Valley.”

But not to be outdone, HBO also released the first ever clips from what will be the seventh and final season of “True Blood.” The only other teaser we’ve had for this season was HBO taking us through the Bon Temps graveyard and looking back at the multitude of graves caused by character deaths (eight BT citizens, vampires not included) with this as a final shot:

R.I.P. “True Blood”

Now we have fresh meat to sink our teeth into (no vampire pun intended); we have our first real look at season 7.

Yes, that’s Sookie Stackhouse’s voice in the background talking about a wild vampire attack on the church. Remember those wild, Hep-V infected vamps from last season? (If you don’t, here’s a refresher.) Basically they’re being wild infected vamps and feeding on anything they can. There have apparently been several of these attacks because main character, fairy, telepath, and sad excuse for a heroine Sookie Stackhouse (Anne Paquin) says, “another ambush.” We cut to a clip of Bon Temps’ normal human sheriff Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer) looking at a church with words from the Hail Mary spray painted on the side: “Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.” In the background, Sookie is still talking and wondering how this is happening, how “in this country and in this day and age that our government would leave us for dead.” Cut to another spray painted message, this time to shifter Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) looking at “FEMA HELP US” on pavement. We then see someone getting thrown around, vampire Jessica Hamby (Deborah Ann Woll) looking upset, someone cocking a gun, and Sookie talking about the people of Bon Temps turning on each other. Then quick flashes of vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), vampire Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley), Jessica again, spiritual medium Lafayette Reynolds (Nelsan Ellis), and werewolf Alcide Herveaux (Joe Manganiello). The sneak peek ends with Sookie, Sam, Jason, Alcide, and Andy standing together, and Sookie saying, “There’s no one left.”

Now, let’s take a look at this. First of all, the end of last season was insane. Every non-infected human was discussing becoming a designated blood donor to non-infected vampires to stop Hep-V from destroying the population. Or something like that. It’s still confusing half a year later and I’ll confess I haven’t spent hours dissecting it. Sam was having a party at the bar and trying to get the designated donors and vampires matched up. Because it’s “True Blood” and vampires and who knows why, the party is outside at night. I get the night part, but outside? Why does it have to be outside at Sam’s bar, which is admittedly surrounded by woods when you know there are roaming bands of infected vamps wandering around? Just WHY? So, at this outside buffet line – er, designated blood donor event – a roaming band of vamps (SURPRISE!) appears and wants to eat everyone because they’re sick, infected, starving vamps. We’ll just chalk that up to bad party planning. That’s how the season ended.

Apparently, in the aftermath of the Hep-V infected blood, the roaming vamps, and all that Billith bull crap from last season, Bon Temps has been deserted by the government. Why anyone with a bit of sanity would still be living there I don’t know, but some still are. The remaining people are arming themselves against these rogue vampires and we’re likely to see some citizen vs. citizen action, like fighting over the last can of soup instead of packing up the car and moving. Sookie is lost and helpless – as usual. She’s talking throughout the tease and wondering what’s going on and why the government and country would abandon them. I say that Sookie’s lost and helpless as usual because TV Sookie is always lost and helpless. She’s always looking for someone (or thing) to save her: Sam, Bill, Eric, Lafayette, Terry, Andy, Warlow, her fairy grandfather, Pam, Jessica, Tara…. If you’ve seen the series, you get the idea. This time, though, she may be in true dire straits. We don’t know of anything – besides the True Death – that can stop these rogue vamps and what a True Death may look like for them. If they’re mutating, maybe staking won’t do it anymore. Even Buffy had to find new ways to kill vamps in the last season of her show (coincidentally season 7). The town of Bon Temps has been abandoned by the sane from the look of the trailer, though. A church spray painted, an empty parking lot with a message for FEMA, and a couple clips of people in the daytime don’t reveal that many people are remaining. But we do still have Sookie wondering what’s going on and who can save her and the town. If that wasn’t a constant theme with Sookie, I don’t know where this show would be

The US Government’s reaction to Gov. Burrell’s Facility plan

Why has the government abandoned Bon Temps and, presumably, that area of Louisiana, if not the whole state? Remember back in season 6, with Governor Burrell’s plan to end the vampires through the Facility and the re-manufacturing of TruBlood, this time with Hep-V in it? Maybe the US government had a collective “LOL yeah right” moment and decided to let Louisiana go and kill off its stupidity. I don’t know. There are roaming vamps (domestic terrorists, for lack of a better phrase) running around and wanting to kill “innocent” citizens of Bon Temps (no one in Bon Temps is innocent and we all know it). The government is doing nothing about it: not the FBI, or the NSA, or Homeland Security. Does anyone even care, or is there no one left to care? People are so desperate for help that they’re spray painting messages to FEMA in the middle of parking lots. So whatever is going on, it’s not looking good for the little town. At least Andy and Jason are still cops, though, and Sam must still be mayor. I’m not holding out tons of hope, though, as that closing shot shows only Sookie, Sam, Jason, Andy, and Alcide.

If Alcide is hanging around, it’s a safe bet that he’s still with Sookie. Sorry Eric and/or Bill, shippers. Alcide is winning that fight. Speaking of which….

WHERE IS ERIC? WHERE IS PAM? Where are the two most badass vampires of the entire series? Last we saw, Eric was sunbathing in the nude on a snowy mountainside when the effects of Lilith’s blood wore off, and he began to smoke. Pam flew off to save him, leaving behind Tara and the partying vampires at the Compton House. And that’s it. On IMDB, for season 7 episode one, titled “Jesus Gonna Be Here,” both Kristin Bauer von Straten (Pam) and Alexander Skarsgård (Eric) are billed. We can all hope for some resolution – such as Pam saving Eric, or Eric using his super speed to get into the shade which was only 100 yards or so away at the time he began to burn – to that situation.

We also don’t see Sam’s pregnant girlfriend who served zero real purpose last season; Eric’s second “child,” Willa Burrell; Tara’s mother who offered to be Tara’s donor, which led us fans to have some nefarious thoughts about that (“Is Lettie May infected and trying to kill Tara?” being the main one); Arlene, Holly, or really anyone else. Just lots of random clips of crazed vamps, Sookie, a group of screaming people, Andy in front of a church, Sam by the sidewalk, someone cocking a gun, individual shots of Bill, Jessica, Tara, and Alcide, and then the group shot of Sookie, Sam, Alcide, Andy, and Jason.

#southpole -30C What are you reading Alex? The script for season 7 of #truebloodHBO ? :-)

Here’s what we do definitely know about season 7 and particularly episode 1: Bill Moyer (everyone’s former favorite vampire Bill Compton) is directing and the title is “Jesus Gonna Be Here.” When I did a search for “Jesus Gonna Be Here,” this song by Tom Waits came up; the coolest thing about “True Blood” from episode 1 was that every episode is titled after a song. I still love that. Now, it could end up being a different song or artist, but that’s what I could find to whet your appetite. According to International Business Times (yes, they talk “True Blood,” too!), the first episode will have lots of flashbacks, introduce us to new characters, and ERIC IS ALIVE AND WELL. Yes, folks, it’s true! He’ll have a love interest introduced in the second episode, a French woman named Sylvia or Sylvie (sorry Team Eric!). Waitress and good witch Holly Cleary’s two teenage sons, Wade (Noah Matthews) and Rocky Cleary (Aaron Christian Howles), will be playing significant roles this final season and be key parts of the plot, says True-Blood.net. A new human character named Troy, played by Brett Lorenzini. Other additions include Vince, an anti-vampire human; Lou, a member of Vince’s vigilante anti-vamp group; Mack, another Vince follower; and Nizor, “a Persian vampire in his late 30s to early 50s. A patron at the Moroccan bar, he’s involved in the game of Russian roulette and ‘derives courage and comfort from his faith in Allah,'” reports International Business Times. Aside from this information, we can only guess that the rogue vampire bands will be the bad guys this season, but “True Blood” is known to lead you down one path and completely change midway through the journey. Who knows? I do wonder how Bill will be post-Billith (that whole storyline still gives me a headache), and what kind of relationships the humans and vampires will now be forging in the face of the infected vamps. Looking at everything, the producers and writers have a great selection of things to pick from for season 7; here’s to hoping they get it right and make season 7 the best season of “True Blood” yet!

So, Truebies, what are your thoughts? Will season 7 make up for season 6 and end the series on a high note, or will it be so-so or, oh no!, disastrous? Who do you think will end up together, and who will end up in the ground? Make sure to add your comments below!

“True Blood” returns for its seventh and final season at 9pm Eastern/8pm Central on Sunday, June 22, 2014. Be sure to bookmark us here at hbowatch.com for all of the latest “True Blood” stories, reviews, trailers, recaps, and rumors.

I have been a True Blood fan from the beginning but was disappointed with last season. Season 5 wasn’t too exciting either compared to the 4 previous seasons as well. I questioning if TB was coming back this season since I had not seen any promos or airing of previous episodes so glad to hear it will be back.

I hope Alan Ball will back to bring the fun and sexiness back to TB so the series can end on a high note. Think the story lines were better when he was still writing the show.

I don’t think Alan Ball is involved with TB anymore. He left after season 5. I completely agree with you that last season was a major disappointment. It was so silly! With this last season, I hope that TB will go out with a bang and bring back the elements we all loved. Fingers crossed!

No I don’t think so. I’m pretty the show went downhill because of Alan Ball and his schizo storytelling, and the new showrunner just kept the plane going downward. Last season didn’t seem that bad, but that’s only because I was watching it alongside Dexter’s final season, which was the most dreadful thing ever. I still think season five was the worst season of this show. Final seasons usually aren’t good, especially on shows that haven’t been good in years, so basically have your expectations lowered.

I completely agree with you. I stopped watching halfway through season 4 because the story was too far away from the wonderful books. I’ll maybe watch the first episode but if it is as disappointing as it sounds I will not watch any more. HBO has some great original programming like Game and such.

No Eric Northman?
The True Blood marketing department is the worst, they really have no idea what would get fans excited for the final season!

Don’t worry! Eric will be there. There’s a new section we just added talking about his role this season.
