Okay, here we go with another one, and it looks like another doozy. I mean, the pre-credit scene gives us Hayes held at knifepoint. “You’re No Good” is also one of those episodes where we are cleverly told that we don’t start there but rather ’13 hours earlier’. Hayes starts her day by finding out from her partner Awan (Koostachin) that forensics checked the residues found in the impounded van that which Ellis’s brother died in. There was residue from C4 explosives present. The two questioned why that wasn’t common knowledge in all the records of the incident. The expert said it was likely overlooked information because the previous agent on the matter, our Agent Breen, was not at the top of his game; he did end up in a sanitarium after all. So, right away, to a degree, we already know how this day is going to play out. It isn’t the first time someone mentioned Breen’s condition, and we saw how uncooperative Mrs. Breen (Barbeau) was. So, Hayes isn’t going to hesitate in getting visitation with the ill agent, right?
And what is Ellis up to that morning? Why, he is laying the charm down with a hospital nurse. No, not to grab a date but to get intel on Officer Groomes’ (Logue) condition. Ellis finds out that the man is in a coma and that his chances are slim, which puts an even bigger grin on Ellis’s face. But, come on, we know we will see Groomes again. That smile is wiped off Ellis’s face when he meets up with Hayes in their usual spot. She shows him what she’s learned. He got sidetracked by Groomes, but Ellis needs to start giving up the dirt, or go and find dirt on Saxton to move matters along. In turn, Hayes keeps Ellis out of prison and gets the truth about Joey Ellis’ death. It isn’t going to be easy for either of them. Ellis has got to get even closer to Saxton, and Hayes has to fight the stonewalling she is getting at the field office.
Hayes & Awan don’t get anywhere with the sanitarium administrator, so they are going to have to find another way in to see Breen. As for Ellis, he found out that Saxton (David) had a meeting in Tucson, so he punctures a hole in the car that Saxton’s driver usually tools him around in. Ellis doesn’t wait around, though; he needs to see his pop, Wade (Bernsen). From his old man, he gets the name of the crimering supplier for C4, a lady named Paris Gilford, meaning Ellis isn’t taking Hayes’ say-so about the van explosion. No, he is going to find time to dig around on the matter himself. But it looks like he has to get Saxton to Tucson first. Also, after buttering up a black man and greasing his palm, Hayes & Awan get inside the hospital. So, what is Hayes going to learn from a crazy Breen? What is Ellis going to learn from tough Saxton? I’m sorry, but I digress from answering that because the song of the episode breaks out, and I’ve got to mention it. I’ve got to call out The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s “Foxy Lady” as we see Hayes stripping down to panties to get into a nurse’s uniform and strutting down the hall towards Breen’s room. Nice moment! Where were we? Oh, yeah, Just zippin’ along in the Duster (it’s like a character, you know?) are Ellis and Saxton. The boss man
started talking about personal feelings and let out that Ellis was one of the few he could trust. When they arrive in Tucson, Ellis manages to snoop around enough to learn that Saxton was meeting with Russians. But, evidently, Saxton really trusts Ellis. They stop at a seedy bar, Saxton the only black in the room, and they sip at whiskey. Saxton tells Ellis he met with Russians and even told him that he wished Joey Ellis was still around. He loved him like his own. Does that mean Saxton didn’t order him killed, and if he didn’t, then who? This kind of talk is making it harder for Ellis to turn on Saxton. Well, the two end their night in a big bar brawl when the locals don’t care for Saxton’s kind. And we know how Hayes’ evening ends up, but with 11 minutes left in the episode, we haven’t seen it play out yet. She and Awan find the right room, but he keeps watch out in the hall. Breen attacks Hayes and flees the room. They split up to try to find him with the hope of getting some logical answers from him. When Hayes finds him, he is brandishing that knife, and her life is in danger. Okay, we know she gets away from
that moment, right? She talks enough to get him to crumble, and Breen gives her only one kernel of possible information before she and Awan hightail it out of there. It could have just been babble, but he said to ‘follow the numbers.’ Is it something to go on? Also hightailing it is our Duster. They finally stop to treat their battered knuckles as Saxton rambles on about the last time he was in a brawl like that. It was the time he met Paris Gilford, and with that, Ellis’s suspicions went right back up. He goes to a phone booth to call Paris Gilford and says that he is calling for Saxton and needs her services, like she provided for the Joey Ellis situation, and she says that that can be arranged. He knows what he must do. He calls Hayes and tips her off about Paris Gilford. So, it looks like next episode, we know where we’re heading as Saxton finds his favorite song on the radio, “You’re No Good.” This is a little late in arriving, but let’s do this! We continue the ride next week.
