Person_DavidSimonDavid Simon(pictured) is back in the House! For a while there, if you recall, he was a bit despondent about filmmaking because neither of his shows, THE WIRE and TREME were great ratings successes. Oh, they were critically acclaimed, but he wanted fans to fully embrace his offerings. He didn’t give up and delivered to HBO the recently concluded miniseries SHOW ME A HERO. Total ratings aren’t quite in yet, but it appears to have had a rough run.

The upside to all that is that Mr. Simon is rejuvenated to offer more and HBO is now entertaining not one but two pilot orders from the producer/writer. The first concept is named THE DEUCE.We reported on it earlier this summer.  Written by Simon and long-time collaborator George Pelecanos and directed by Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad), this concept will be the first to go into production in New York this October. Named for 42nd Street, it follows the story of the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s, exploring the rough-and-tumble world that existed in midtown Manhattan until the rise of HIV. THE DEUCE was inspired in part by the career of twin brothers who were players in the Times Square world and became fronts for Mob control of the volatile and lucrative sex industry from its origins. It sounds perfect for David Simon. James Franco is said to be tied to the project.

Co-writer Pelecanos (pictured) said of the project –

People_GeorgePelacanos-300x211“I’m pleased to continue a creative collaboration with David Simon and Nina Noble that goes back nearly 15 years, from THE WIRE through TREME. Porn, prostitution, pimps, the Mob, after-hours nightlife, institutional corruption, and New York in its Wild West heyday…it’s a world rich in character, and a fascinating story we’re eager to tell.”

The second work to get a chance on HBO is yet to be titled and is not as fleshed out as the first one. Collaborating with Simon on this one though is famed journalist Carl Bernstein and there topic is Capitol Hill. It is simply described as a detailed examination of partisanship and the influence of money on national governance. Another concept that allows Simon to explore the mechanizations of man in society. Let’s hope one or both of these concepts stick. One of them is bound to do just that. David Simon belongs at HBO. Michael Lombardo, HBO’s president of programming stated –

“We are thrilled to continue our longstanding relationship with preeminent producer David Simon, whose keen eye and visceral perspective on today’s socio-economic ills have set him apart from all others. No one else creates with such authenticity, integrity and brilliant realism.”

Nobody. We will keep a close eye both projects.

Capitol Hill drama shoots its pilot this summer. Presumably after The Deuce is done shooting. So I’d guess that The Deuce starts filming around April and Capitol Hill will shoot in August.

Pelecanos is an excellent writer!
I don’t mind seeing James Franco running a porn cartell, we’ll see how serious I can take him playing 2 of them at the same time..
