People_DavidFincher-231x300Many around here have been excited about the notion of David Fincher (pictured right) working with HBO. It started back on 09.09.13 when HBOWatch first posted that Fincher wanted to bring the U. K series UTOPIA to HBO’s audience. Then on 09.09.14 (how about the coincidence) we reported that Fincher was teaming up with famed crime fiction writer James Ellroy(also pictured at lower left) on a potential project. Of the two concepts only additional mention of UTOPIA surfaced again. On 09.20.14 we announced that Fincher would be directing the entire first season of UTOPIA himself if the work was to be picked up. We are still waiting on further details on that one.

Well, finally additional information has now come forward regarding the Ellroy collaboration. The two of them are teaming up on a real potboiler being called SHAKEDOWN. According to our source it is a slightly different take on James Ellroy’s novella Shakedown, but with the same character. The HBO concept will be inspired by the life of legendary 1950’s Hollywood vice cop-turned-private eye Fred Otash. Just think about that for a second. Hollywood’s scandalous tabloid fodder penned by a crime master matched with a near perfect cinematic wit. The seamy underbelly of the glamorous set should come to life. David Fincher is also developing a comedy series as well. The work is being called LIVING ON VIDEO and takes place in the world of a music video director from the 1980’s. That concept is apropos as Fincher directed such videos back in the day like Madonna’s Express Yourself. The premise of the work is as follows:  In 1983 Los Angeles we find Bobby, a wide-eyed guy who drops out of college and drives to Hollywood with dreams of directing a sci-fi epic. He lands a job as a production assistant for a company making music videos. In the vein of HBO’s ENTOURAGE,  the series revolves around the players of the then-exploding music video industry — directors, record executives and crew members, many of them dabbling in drugs — through the eyes of the newcomer.

At this stage, both SHAKEDOWN and LIVING ON VIDEO have been ordered to pilot. Along with UTOPIA in the works surely at least one of these works will get picked up to series. We can only hope for all three of them. Which concept do you like best? Here is another great filmmaker coming to HBO and we can only make us excited for HBO’s future.

Very cool news. The 2 drama series are what interest me the most and I’d love to see both get picked up. Both sound very promising and it looks like the leftovers will be on the chopping block if they don’t improve with the next season. I’m still sad The Money didn’t make it out of pilot stage, that sounded promising.
