Damn, HBO Must Think We’re FAT or Something…

Well, they must because they are continuing with their The Weight of the Nation Initiative.  In May 2012 HBO was a key component in a multi-media outreach program to address the obesity issue in America. HBOWatch covered the story about the project and the specific documentaries HBO made. Now that you have refreshed your memory by checking out those links here is a quick look at what is happening this year.

On 05.07 HBO, all across its channels, will air two new documentaries under the collective banner of THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION FOR KIDS. They will be joined by a repeat broadcast of one of the films from last year. Together these three pieces address children with what they can learn to help them to a healthier life.  Here is a brief overview of the upcoming programs.

Here is a bit more detail fo those interested. KEBREEYA’S SALAD DAYS follows 17-year-old Kebreeya’s crusade to improve nutriWeightnationKids_kidtion awareness on a personal, family and community level in her North Carolina town. After her mom’s gastric-bypass surgery, and seeing relatives with asthma and diabetes, Kebreeya changes her diet to exclude fast food and soda. Kebreeya also maintains a garden at an elementary school and encourages others to do the same via the student group SWARM (Students Working for an Agricultural Revolutionary Movement). She also solicits lunch menu suggestions from other students and submits them to school officials, proposing a salad bar for their high-school cafeteria. She proves to be a great role model for people of all ages on making healthy choices.

QUIZ ED! tests the nutrition knowledge of students of varying ages and activity levels to inspire them to take action, revealing that there are steps kids can take toward a healthier lifestyle. The special also spotlights kids’ concerns about their level of physical activity. Answering tricky trivia questions, the kids of QUIZ ED! show how much they already know about keeping fit. It may be a fun and entertaining way to get kids to understand the importance of good foodCafeteriatakeover_kidss and physical activity. The third film airing is a repeat of THE GREAT CAFETERIA TAKEOVER which follows a group of New Orleans kids, who dubbed themselves the Rethinkers, as they make a difference in their community during the post-Katrina rebuilding period by transforming their school lunch menu with healthier, better-tasting options. The special received a Primetime Emmy nomination in the category of Outstanding Children’s Nonfiction, Reality or Reality-Competition Program.

To watch this with your family is easy. All three films will be streamed free of charge on HBO.com and can be found on HBO, HBO2 and HBO Family.  Again, KEBREEYA’S SALAD DAYS and QUIZ ED!, debut back-to-back TUESDAY 05.07 beginning at 5:30pm ET/PT on HBO followed by THE GREAT CAFETERIA TAKEOVER at 6:30pm.

This year’s campaign for The Weight of the Nation Intiative will reach deep into local areas to distribute 20,000 community action kits that support local organizations working on obesity prevention across the country. The kits include the three films of THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION FOR KIDS in both English and Spanish.

Hey, HBO one last thought – maybe we are fat because we spend a few nights a week glued to your programming. Did you ever think of that?
