If you have nowhere to go Friday nights than HBO is the place for you with REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER holding session, the return of Shane Smith and his team in VICE and HBO’s return to adult animation with ANIMALS..

The focus of this post is the exploits of the critters from the Big Apple in ANIMALS. debuting Friday, February 5 at 11:30pm. Here is a little promo:

Who’d a thought horses would love those gigs!

What is not exactly clear via the above clip or the season’s trailer is whether or not all these urban dwellers, regardless of whether they are bedbugs, pigeons, cats, dogs, etc., are actual characters or just random fauna. For example, do the police horses above have names? Will we see them in an actual story arc or is there experience here just a random tale? Other shots show what appears to be a pigeon family? Are they fully developed characters with names perhaps all starting with the letter ‘P’ and will we see more of the family as the series goers on? Is the poodle named FiFi? Luckily, we are able to have that line of questions answered below.

It doesn’t matter nor will it affect the show any if we aren’t totally able to tell one swan from another we’re just trying to speculate on the approach HBO’s return to adult animation will take. The trailer certainly shows a series of random vignettes using all types from NYC’s other inhabitants. It would just be cool to tell players apart if they had names. The only names we are aware of for sure are all the talents that voice these creatures. Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano (the creators of the show) voice many of the characters. They are joined by the likes of Eric Andre, A$AP Ferg, A$AP Rocky, Katie Aselton, Jessica Chastain, Rob Corddry of BALLERS, Jay Duplass & Mark Duplass (producers of ANIMALS. and TOGETHERNESS), Ellie Kemper, Nick Kroll, Lauren Lapkus, Melanie Lynsky (Michelle to Mark Duplass’ Brett on TOGETHERNESS), Marc Maron, Kumail Nanjiani, Horatio Sanz, Adam Scott, Molly Shannon (who appeared in SEX AND THE CITY, ENLIGHTENED, GETTING ON and the upcoming DIVORCE) Wanda Sykes, Cobie Smulders, Kurt Vile, Matt Walsh, Zach Woods and Steve Zissis (Alex in TOGETHERNESS).They all take turns voicing the menagerie as a comment on human behavior and could prove quite fun for us all.

For further insight here is an Invitation to the Studio:

Oh, we discover that the animals are named and that there is one steroid laden pigeon present.

We also learn that this show is more improvised than scripted. That makes it fun. And the rough-drawn animation style fits right in also. It almost seems that they are lifted right from Matarese and Luciano’s early sketches for the concept. Surely they played with ideas on napkins and such. It was noted that they looked out the window and riffed on what the pigeons perched might say and the ideas flowed from there. So get ready for the animals take on society and the world with the rats up from the sewers, the pigeons on the roost, the horses on patrol, the cats in the penthouse, the geese on the ponds the dogs in the parks and the bedbugs wherever they may be and who knows what else in Animals..

Oh, and one more clip, plus the note that the title is officially ANIMALS. with a period at the end. Check out “What’s On: HBO Schedule For February” for the official trailer and episode descriptions.
