There had been buzz this time last year that BIG LITTLE LIES was not over, and that a third season could happen. Some key players seemed game for it including producer/actor Nicole Kidman, as noted in our earlier posting on the matter. However, it seems they are waiting for one key party to fall in line – Liane Moriarty.

People_LianeMoriartyWhat, the author of the source material does not allow a continuation of the Monterey Five’s story? Yes, it has her blessing. But the producing team behind the tale is respectfully waiting for the novelist to complete a book sequel to BIG LITTLE LIES before they turn it into a sequel to the HBO hit. Not only are the actresses involved keen to continue, but David E. Kelley is as well. He wrote the screenplay and produced the first two seasons based on Moriarty’s book. The production companies involved, Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, Kidman’s Blossom Films, and Kelly’s eponymous shingle, no doubt have the first option to run with it once the novel has been published. There is no timeline for when that book is to arrive on the market.

HBO head honcho Casey Bloys has said that he was waiting for Liane Moriarty’s sequel book before moving forward. He said,

“[Nicole’s] very excited. They’re all excited. We’re excited. We’re all waiting for the book, which I believe is coming soon, but I do not have a copy in my hands.”

As for what the story entails Moriarty told the U. K.’s Radio Times

“With Big Little Lies, all I can tell you is I’m writing a sequel to my own book, following on from my own story.  Because I wrote Big Little Lies when my children were little and the children in the story are just starting kindergarten and now, of course, my children are all teenagers so they’re providing a wealth of teen material. “So, I’m writing a sequel with all the children as teenagers so now the women are the parents of teens. It’s still early stages so I can’t really tell you anything much except that they’re parenting teens. I’ve got them [all the main women], they’re all there for sure.”

Yes, it will be a bit of a wait, but the producers are doing the right thing by letting her take her characters and fashion them as she will. The end result will most likely be worth it. Do you agree?
