HBO-Logo-SpaceThe new season of TV is launching and HBO isn’t going to let it all pass by without offering up its best. October sees the launch of a highly anticipated drama already getting buzz and a new comedy too. It also has the return of two ladies absent from HBO’s screen for a while and a recent Emmy winner has new shows on as well. Throw in the launch of nightly news and – pow! – HBO is igniting the fall schedule. Let’s take a look at most of the content coming to your favorite pay channel. There are plenty of reasons to circle your date on the calendar this month so here is What’s On for October.

The drama series WESTWORLD kicks off its ten-episode season SUNDAY, OCTOBER 02 (9:00-10:15 p.m. ET), with other one-hour episodes debuting subsequent Sundays, exclusively on HBO. Created for television by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, both of whom are executive producing and writing, with Nolan also directing, the series was inspired by the 1973 motion picture Westworld, written and directed by Michael Crichton. The series is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin, exploring a world in which every human appetite, no matter how noble or depraved, can be indulged. Co-creator Nolan explains, “Building on the incredibly evocative concept of the original film, we wanted to pose the question: If you could be completely immersed in a fantasy, one in which you could do whatever you wanted, would you discover things about yourself that you didn’t want to know?”

Co-creator Joy adds, “We also wanted to explore what it means to be human from the outside in – through the eyes of the ‘hosts’: the lifelike AI characters that are the main attractions of the park. It’s a meditation on consciousness – the blessing and the burden of it – beautifully portrayed by our remarkable cast.” That cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Jimmi Simpson, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Ben Barnes, Simon Quarterman, Angela Sarafyan, Luke Hemsworth and Clifton Collins, Jr. Executive producer/writer/director, Jonathan Nolan; executive producer/writer, Lisa Joy; executive producers, J.J. Abrams, Jerry Weintraub, Bryan Burk. Check out this Intro seen for the first time on this site.

I’m surprised that the show has released episode details but it has, so take a look.

Movies: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The movie lineup is only as good as the content coming out of Hollywood. Not everyone goes for every movie, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t people out there loving the romances, animation and horror films shown. They can’t all be acclaimed epics or blockbuster action movies. The premieres for October offer up such a variety. They are DEADPOOL, RIDE ALONG 2, JOY, GODS OF EGYPT and POLTERGEIST. Here is a little on each.People_Deadpool-300x150

A former Special Forces officer (Ryan Reynolds) becomes a crime-fighting vigilante when DEADPOOL debuts SATURDAY, OCTOBER 01 at 8:00pm. Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano and Brianna Hildebrand also star. Directed by Tim Miller; screenplay by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick. The geek squad just eat this one up. They like this R-rated superhero. It plays for laughs so others might like it also. As his wedding day approaches, a rookie cop accompanies his soon-to-be brother-in-law, a no-nonsense Atlanta cop, on a drug bust to Miami in RIDE ALONG 2, debuting SATURDAY, OCTOBER 08 at 8:00pm. Ice Cube, Kevin Hart and Tika Sumpter star in this action comedy. We reviewed the first movie about this time back in 2014. It did well enough to generate this sequel. We’ll see how this one fares. Jennifer Lawrence stars as the title character, an entrepreneur and matriarch with a successful family business, when JOY debuts SATURDAY, OCTOBEMovies_GodsOfEgypt-300x170R 15 at 8:00pm. Robert De Niro, Edgar Ramirez, Diane Ladd, Virginia Madsen, Isabella Rossellini and Bradley Cooper also star in the inspirational true story, which is directed by David O. Russell with a screenplay by David O. Russell. Miss Lawrence has proved quite popular in her film career. How does this one rate? Two deities battle for power of the once peaceful and prosperous ancient empire in GODS OF EGYPT, debuting SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22 at 8:00pm. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau stars with Gerard Butler and Geoffrey Rush. Seems to me this one didn’t survive at the box office, but in the comfort of your own home you just might enjoy this swords-&-sandals tale. A family must rescue their daughter after she’s captured by evil spirits when POLTERGEIST debuts SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29 at 8:00pm. This remake of the classic horror yarn stars Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris and Jane Adams. What can we say, Halloween is this month, right? Though I still don’t understand why we need remakes of movies all the time? Anyway, out of this bunch here is some JOY.

HBO Documentary Films: From director Marc Levin and producer Daphne Pinkerson, CLASS DIVIDE highlights the effects of hyper-gentrification and growing inequality through the microcosm of New York City’s West Chelsea neighborhood, focusing on an intersection where an elite private school sits directly across the street from low-income public housing. A moving chronicle, it bears witness to the effects of gentrification and stagnant class mobility on young people who share the same neighborhood – yet live in very different worlds – as they try to navigate this rapidly changing landscape. This final installment in a trilogy about economic forces affecting ordinary people debuts MONDAY, OCTOBER 03 at 8:00pm. We are going strong with videos this round so why not a few more.

HBO Kids: For more than four decades, SESAME STREET has helped children grow smarter, stronger and kinder by providing preschoolers with the gold standard in quality educational programming. The award-winning show wraps up its 46th season with a new episode debuting SATURDAY, OCT. 29 at 9:00am. See you for Season 47! Humor me as I give you a clip from the latest episode!

HBO Sports: ANY GIVEN WEDNESDAY WITH BILL SIMMONS, a weekly talk show hosted by one of the most influential figures in contemporary sports media, continues its 20-show season WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 05 at 10:00pm, with other editions debuting subsequent Wednesdays at the same time, exclusively on HBO. Hosted by the four-time Sports Emmy winner, THE FIGHT GAME WITH JIM LAMPLEY is a provocative, engaging and informative experience that delves into intriguing storylines, newsmakers and issues that are top-of-mind in boxing. The latest edition debuts WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 05 at 11:00pm. REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL goes behind the box scores and statistics to tackle timely subjects in the world of contemporary sports. Featuring a top lineup of contributors, the next monthly edition debuts TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25 at 10:00pm. Here is a current REAL SPORTS topic.

Other Movies and Shows: On the main channel we discovered some other cinematic treats. Not many new releases seem to be out this time around, but this is what I’ve found: there is COP CAR about two boys who come across an empty car in a field and proceed to take it for a joyride–unaware that the sheriff it belongs to has just committed murder. Kevin Bacon stars as theMovies_ByTheSea-300x169lawman on a furious mission to stop the boys. Also listed as a First Run is WE WERE SOLDIERS, a retelling of the 965 Battle of Ia Drang in the early days of America’s involvement in Vietnam. It stars Mel Gibson. BY THE SEA(pictured) is another one. Writer/director Angelina Jolie Pitt reflects on the subject of grief in this deeply personal film about a couple at a crossroads in their relationship as they meet new friends at a French seaside resort. Ooh, shades of real life in that one! Also you can still catch BLACK MASS, OUR BRAND IS CRISIS, and EVEREST plus oldies like FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, GHOST and CAST AWAY.
