HBO-Logo-SpaceWe are in the thick of it now. We are into spring and into another exciting season of HBO content. As this post will point out there is a variety to choose from. With hot series, powerful documentaries and specials to comedy, animation and sports HBO has packaged up a May 2017 package that just looks fun. Let’s get right to it. We got a lot to share. I don’t want to waste any time; here is What’s On.

Original Series: THE LEFTOVERS continues its eight-episode, third and final season SUNDAY, MAY 07 (9:00-10:00pm), followed by other episodes subsequent Sundays at the same time. The new season of the Peabody Award-winning drama series, which was created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta, finds the Garvey and Murphy families coming together as they desperately grasp for a system of belief to help better explain that which defies explanation. The world is crackling with the energy of something big about to happen, a corresponding bookend to the Sudden Departure that sent them all spinning years earlier, bringing their journey =-in a thrilling series climax.

Movies: What movies are about to bloom on HBO? Three diverse ones, not one like the other. A character study, an action filled film and an animated tale are forthcoming. They are SULLY, JASON BOURNE and STORKS. An HBO Film presentation fills a Saturday, but more on it in a bit. First, a look at the theatrical debuts.

If you remember the incident you remember the man. SULLY tells the story of Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger (Tom Hanks), an American commercial airline pilot who brought his faulty aircraft down safely on the Hudson River, saving the flight’s passengers and crew. Based on a true story, the film debuts SATURDAY, MAY 06 at 8:20pm and also stars Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney. Matt Damon stars as the ex-CIA operative who continues his quest to discover his real identity in JASON BOURNE, debuting SATURDAY, MAY 13 at 8:00pm. Jessica Chastain, Kristin Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie and Chiwetel Ejiofor also star in the action hit, directed by Paul Greengrass, with a screenplay by Paul Greengrass and Christopher Rouse. Once only used for delivery babies, storks now mostly deliver packages, but when a baby girl shows up at the facility, Junior (Andy Samberg) is charged with delivering her to her family. Katie Crown, Kelsey Grammer, Jennifer Aniston, Ty Burrell, Kegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele and Danny Trejo lend their voices to the charming animated film STORKS, debuting SATURDAY, MAY 27 at 8:00pm.

HBO Films: The subject of this movie may be an old story by now, but you cannot pass up Robert De Niro, right?

Starring Robert De Niro, who also serves as an executive producer, and Michelle Pfeiffer as Bernie and Ruth Madoff, THE WIZARD OF LIES debuts SATURDAY, MAY 20 (8:00-10:15pm). The film examines Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme – his deception, lies and cover-up, all as the financier’s wife and sons are catapulted into a harsh and unrelenting spotlight. Alessandro Nivola, Nathan Darrow, Kristen Connolly, Lily Rabe and Hank Azaria also star. Here is the first look on the site of the trailer:

HBO Documentary Films: Two hot topics are drugs and true crime and HBO explores both topics in May.Docs_MommyDead_Poster-225x300

From journalist-director Perri Peltz, WARNING: THIS DRUG MAY KILL YOU takes an unflinching look at the devastating effects of opioid addiction in the U.S., profiling four families who have seen their lives tragically changed by abuses involving their loved ones, whose addictions arose due to doctors’ prescriptions of dangerous painkillers. Through the personal and emotional stories of those who have dealt with addiction, either as a user or concerned family member, the film sheds light on the struggles of ordinary people whose lives turned on a dime after minor and major ailments led to the over-prescription of highly addictive opioids, which are often the gateway to heroin. The film debuts MONDAY, MAY 01 at 10:00pm.

Debuting MONDAY, MAY 15  at 10:00pm MOMMY DEAD AND DEAREST explores a headline-grabbing crime in the age of social media. Things are not always as they appear in the case of Dee Dee Blanchard and Gypsy Rose Blanchard, and what starts out as a grisly tale of matricide morphs into a rabbit hole of deception. Child abuse, mental illness, forbidden love and a bizarre case of Munchausen by proxy syndrome converge in this mystery of a mother and daughter who were thought to be living a fairytale life that turned out to be a living nightmare. Directed by Erin Lee Carr.

HBO Special: Adapting his one-man off-Broadway show of the same name, CHRIS GETHARD: CAREER SUICIDE debuts SATURDAY, MAY 06 (10:00-11:20pm). This exclusive presentation is a comedy about depression, alcoholism, suicide and the other funniest parts of life. Gethard holds nothing back as he dives into his experiences with mental illness and psychiatry, finding hope in the strangest places. Here is our first look.

Movies_Legend-300x150Other Movies and Shows: Yeah, well we kind of rushed through all that didn’t we? Let’s see what else we can uncover for the merry month of May. Non-primetime First Runs are light on the main channel it appears. We got LEGEND (pictured) debuting on 05.03 with Tom Hardy deftly taking on two roles as twin gangsters; FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY (since when did his name get attached to this title?) debuts 05.09 and GOOD WILL HUNTING, believe it or not, debuts 05.20. On HBO2 you can snag movies like UNFORGIVEN and ANY GIVEN SUNDAY and CRIMSON TIDE plus, documentary encores like BEWARE THE SLENDERMAN and THE CHESHIRE MURDERS.

HBO’s Other Platforms: More content is blossoming across the platforms. It is our job to point out some. HBO Latino. Two debuts here with ENTONCES NOSOTROS (About Us) on 05.09 and LA LUZ INCIDENTE (Incident Light, pictured) on 05.26. The former is a rom-com about a hopeless romantic who tries to salvage his relationship with his longtime girlfriend by taking her on a beach getaway; the latter is shows a woman who has not been able to put her life back together after the sudden death of her husband, but does find new inspiration to start over. Also on Movies_LaLuzIncidente-300x169the channel are new episodes of PSI Friday nights at 10:00 & the talk show CHUMEL WITH CHUMEL TORRES. Some short films entitled EL CORREDOR (The Runner) and 25KM debut 05.01. Also Colombian pop-rock superstar Juanes takes to the stage in an exclusive concert showcase called JUANES CONCERT FILM.05.19. HBO Family: Hey, the second month in a row with fresh debuts for the kids!  BRATZ: THE MOVIE, based on an urban doll collection, I believe runs through May. In it, four diverse girls aim to shatter their high school’s divisive clique social system. Also, there is SINBAD: LEGEND OF THE SEVEN SEAS in which Sinbad the sailor must retrieve the stolen Book of Peace from a goddess with a penchant for chaos in this mythological animated tale. Brad Pitt is the voice of Sinbad Plus, HERBIE: FULLY LOADED debuts 05.03 and you can also find THE GOLDEN COMPASS, SPACE CHIMPS and THE SIMPSONS MOVIE for family time. HBO Signature: I know some of these titles mentioned before, but we got to take what we are given. How about 15 MINUTES, JOE KIDD, THE EIGER SANCTION, THE TROUBLE WITH SPIES and APPALOOSA? Respectively, they have Robert De Niro as a homicide detective, Clint Eastwood in western mode and then in murder thriller mode, then there is the bumbling spy with Donald Sunderland and Ed Harris’ turn in a western. They are all good and this channel has them. HBO Comedy: You can also take on classic movies of a comedic tone on this channel. May I suggest BROADCAST NEWS, THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP with Robin Williams, HOLLYWOOD ENDING, SIXTEEN CANDLES with Molly Ringwald, OPERATION DUMBO DROP or LEGAL EAGLES with Robert Redford? HBO Zone: If you get this channel then you get a quite a few movie debuts. EXCALIBUR, SCREAM 2 & 3, PLAY MISTY FOR ME and THE BEGUILED to name a few. There are more obscure ones too. Recognize any of these titles? How about ILLICIT DESIRES, PLAY MISTY FOR ME, CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE, PERKINS’ 14, or THE CHILDREN? Seek them out if you are curious. Out of this batch, we single out the stylized look of Frank Miller’s graphic novel “Sin City” brought to cinematic life.

HBONow/Go: Of course, coming to the sites are the of all the series episodes that debut throughout the month on HBO including those seen on HBO Latino like PSI. So, if you don’t want to watch the big TV you can curl up with your tablet and watch them instead. As far as movies go, well there are over a dozen of Action movies alone starting 05.01 including BABYLON A. D. and HIGH PLAIN DRIFTER. You can also find INVENTING THE ABBOTS, NOTORIOUS (about Biggie Smalls), ALIENS IN THE ATTIC (the extraterrestrial kind), TENDER MERCIES (with Best HBONowHBOGo-300x174Actor performance from Robert Duvall) and PRESUMED INNOCENT. The sites also have a series of Collections which are groupings of HBO content packaged together by a theme. Onsite you can find “15 Hidden Gems You Have to See” which includes REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES, THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES and STEALING BEAUTY. Another set is “True Originals: The Best Of HBO FIlms” which offers movies like 1998’s GIA with Angelina Jolie and 2010’s TEMPLE GRANDIN with Claire Danes. Trust me, dig around and you’ll find a gem just right for you. I do all the time.

Next Month’s Tease: To get the name of the movie you need to get the name of the writer who wrote it. To find the author you need to know Mel Gibson movies. Get the name of the 1996 Ron Howard movie he starred in and his character’s name in the Lethal Weapon franchise to get the connection.

To answer last month’s Tease we needed to see if anyone could connect US Airways Flight 1549 to its captain. He is Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger personified by Tom Hanks in SULLY coming in May.

Final Clip: Here is a look at the other theatrical movie we couldn’t fit in up above. Here is a look at JASON BOURNE.

Oh, and if you were baffled by the Zebra back there a then you don’t watch LAST WEEK TONIGHT!

Tough tease. I had to hunt it up. I did, however, immediately recognize your huge slip with the cast of Jason Bourne. None of these people (Jessica Chastain, Kristin Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie and Chiwetel Ejiofor) are in that movie. I think that’s Matt Damon’s supporting cast from The Martian. Jason Bourne stars Alicia Vikander, Tommy Lee Jones, Vincent Cassel, Riz Ahmed and Julia Stiles.

That is what I get for plugging in from an HBO press release without fact checking! I’ll have to go in and correct that or it will bother me all month.

Now how about the tease. Did you come up with it?

Ransom Riggs was easy enough to come up with, but I had to look him up as the author of the book Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children or, as I would re-title it, “Penny Dreadful’s School for Gifted Youngsters.”
