HBO-Logo-SpaceWe don’t know about you, but we think July on HBO has held up pretty good. We are certainly still glued to Sunday nights. Good ratings and critically acclaimed content makes us happy watchers. Of course, the Sunday shows carry over into August so we will look at them and a number of additional programs to get our attention when the oppressive heat drives us indoors towards HBO’s channels and streaming sites. Movies: Five fairly big movies are coming our way in August. Wait, how many Saturdays in the month? The calendar says there are only four, so where are we sneaking in one? Read below to find out as we take a gander at THE PEANUTS MOVIE, BROOKLYN, POINT BREAK, THE DANISH GIRL and IN THE HEART OF THE SEA.

Starting off the month is the Charles Schultz gang in THE PEANUTS MOVIE. It debuts SATURDAY, AUGUST 05 at the special time of 7:00pm. Keeping with past “Peanuts” traditions (simple animation and the perfectly matched music of Vince Guaraldi, the story finds hapless Charlie Brown becoming desperately smitten with his new neighbor: the Little Red-Haired Girl. “This is a sweet, funny, smart, genuine all-ages movie with simple, timeless messages” (Chicago Sun-Times).

Back at the 8:00 time spot the following week is BROOKLYN starring Saoirse Ronan. Here a young Irish girl immigrates to 1950s Brooklyn in this “beautiful and moving” (HoMovies_Brooklynllywood Reporter) picture that earned three Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture. Ronan stars as the young girl who soon becomes torn between her new life–which includes her  blossoming romance with a sweet Italian boy–and the pull of family and duty back in Ireland. Co-starring Domhnall Gleeson, Emory Cohen with Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters. Its debut is SATURDAY, AUGUST 13. On SATURDAY, AUGUST 20 at 8:00pm get ready for the ultimate rush in the rip-roaring remake of the 1991 action classic POINT BREAK. In this high-octane take, the bad guys–led by the charismatic Bodhi (Edgar Ramirez reprising the Patrick Swayze role)–are thrill-seeking extreme sports fanatics who undertake a series of worldwide financial attacks. It’s up to unlikely FBI agent Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey in the Keanu Reeves role) to go undercover with the bandits…and risk his life in a series of death-defying dares. Co-starring Teresa Palmer, Delroy Lindo and Ray Winstone.

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA debuts the last weekend of the month. It debuts SATURDAY, AUGUST 27 at 8:00pm. An inspiration for Herman Melville’s classic novel “Moby-Dick,” this epic drama is a power-packed thriller about the sinking of the American whaling ship The Essex by a massive white whale. Chris HemswortMovies_TheDanishGirl-204x300h stars as the first mate on the Essex who reveals to Melville the story of the terrifying ordeal in which the crew was forced to resort to cannibalism to survive–even as the whale keeps them in its sights. Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland with Ben Whishaw and Brendan Gleeson co-star. Directed by Ron Howard. That leaves THE DANISH GIRL the odd movie out. Eddie Redmayne gives a remarkable, Oscar-nominated performance as a Danish painter who embarks on a groundbreaking odyssey of discovery and sexual identity in this “cinematic landmark” (Variety), inspired by the life of early 20th century transgender pioneer Lili Elbe. Co-starring Alicia Vikander, Ben Whishaw, Sebastian Koch, Amber Heard and Matthias Schoenaerts, Directed by Tom Hooper. Note that it debuts FRIDAY, AUGUST 26 at 9:00pm.

HBO Documentary Films: If you want to catch fresh content here you need to look attentive early in the month. There are two documentaries slated for Monday the 1st and 8th.  Alexandra Pelosi returns with another politically skewed film with MEET THE DONORS: DOES MONEY TALK?. It debuts MONDAY, AUGUST 01 at 9:00pm. In it she takes viewers behind the scenes at top-dollar political fundraisers and chats with dozens of ultra-rich mega-donors from both political parties to find out why they are pouring millions into the 2016 election. Then on MONDAY, AUGUST 08 at 9:00pm comes HITCHCOCK/TRUFFAUT, about the meeting of these iconic cinematic auteurs. Here is a trailer to help explain better.

People_TheCount-150x150

HBO Kids: At 9:00am ET every Saturday morning the world is opened up to the life and wonder of SESAME STREET. It is still going strong at 46 years old. Can The Count count that high? The first episode of the month debuts SATURDAY, AUGUST 06 (9:00am – 9:30am) with “The Good Sport,” followed by ‘Sesame Ocean” on 08.13, “Don’t Get Pushy” on 8.20 and “School For Chickens” on 08.27. Adding THE PEANUTS MOVIE to the line-up makes it a great channel for kids this month!

HBO Sports: HBO Boxing heads back to the Bay Area when WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING: ANDRE WARD VS. ALEXANDER BRAND is seen SATURDAY, AUGUST 06 at 10:35pm from Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA, exclusively on

HBO. Returning to his hometown, Andre Ward (29-0, 15 KOs) continues to pursue dominance in the 175-pound weight class, taking on Alexander Brand (25-1, 19 KOs) from Bogota, Columbia in a light heavyweight bout scheduled for 12 rounds. Other Movies and Shows: In this space we focus on those first run movies that don’t get the luxury of a primetime spot and perhaps a few other treats. We dive right in with SIMON BIRCH about the lifelong friendship between two small-town outcasts–a boy with arrested growth who believes that he was born to do something big, and a boy who is searching for the identity of his Movies_SeventhSon-300x154father. Roger Ebert called “funny and warm-hearted.” CARLITO’S WAY: THE RISE TO POWER is the action-packed prequel to Brian De Palma’s classic 1993 crime epic Carlito’s Way. Here the early years of Puerto Rican gangster Carlito Brigante (Jay Hernandez) are chronicled. I’m sure I mentioned this one before, but it is good; YOUTH starring Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel. There is also KILL THEORY, a thriller and from the bestselling book “The Spook’s Apprentice” by Joseph Delaney comes SEVENTH SON  (pictured) with Jeff Bridges, Ben Barnes and Kit Harington. Also debuting on the channel is HORSEMEN about a series of ritualistic murders…each with a horrifying link to the biblical prophecy portending the four horsemen of the apocalypse. It’s up to troubled detective Dennis Quaid to piece the grisly clues together.

HBO’s Other Platforms:  A quick look at some other choices to get out of the heat and enjoy. HBO Latino: This channel offers new episodes of DIOS INC, EL NELGOCIO and SR. AVILA. Also debuting is a new talk show called CHUMEL CON CHUMEL TORRES. It is a weekly talk show featuring analysis and political humor with a touch of irony and satire courtesy of your host, Scarface-300x225Mexican comedian Jose Manuel “Chumel” Torres. This is the first show of its kind developed and produced by HBO Latin America for the Latin American region and the United States. On the movie front this is AURORA about a young girl abandoned in the mountains by human traffickers who wanders until she finds a cabin in the woods to take refuge. DETRAS DE LA VERDAD (Behind the Truth) gives us two Uruguayan journalists investigating crimes against humanity and FELICES 140 (Happy 140) in which a woman invites friends and relatives to celebrate her 40th birthday, but when she announces that she has won a huge jackpot, the party takes a dark turn as the greedy guests plot to take her fortune. HBO Family: Besides the preschool and school- kid fare there are a few movies to note How about THE SECRET GARDEN and THE NAMESAKE. The first is a telling of the famed book directed by Agnieszka Holland and the latter title has Indian immigrants experiencing America is another adapted novel to screen. It stars Irrfan Khan and Jacinda Barrett. HBO Signature: Wow, what a list of goodies here. Take in CAPOTE with Philip Seymour Hoffman as Truman Capote; Jason Statham as THE TRANSPORTER and Joseph Fiennes, as the ENEMY AT THE GATES. Plus, who can’t get enough of SCARFACE with Al Pacino. Plus, I can remember watching Robert Redford in BRUBAKER on classic HBO back in the early ‘80’s.

https://youtu.be/ZB9IkSTtEMo?t=55s

HBO Comedy: Just because the titles sound funny to say all strung together how about checking out TO WONG FOO THANKS FOR EVERYTHING, JULIE NEWMAR, and KUNG POW! ENTER THE FIST or GRIDLOCK’D and GRILLED. Only you can decide if they are great comedy combos. HBO Zone: Just a few more so hang in there. How about MAFIA!, ICE PRINCESS and SUDDEN IMPACT? We’ll let you seek them out if so inclined; a gem always surfaces if you look.

Movies_WaldoPepper-186x300

HBONow/HBOGo: Clint Eastwood, Al Pacino & Robert Redford are all over sites with THE ENFORCER, MAGNUM FORCE, SCENT OF A WOMAN, DOG DAY AFTERNOON, CARLITO’S WAY, SEA OF LOVE and THE GREAT WALDO PEPPER. Next Month’s Tease: This is a tough one unless you just Google it I guess. It is a three part question, but most of the answers fall in place once you figure out your clue. The woman who stars in this one is no stranger to HBO. Name the actress and what she appears in on HBO and what she can also be seen in in September. Your clue is – Aokigahara.

Last month if you knew your 2015 movies and that a peanut was a legume than you got THE PEANUTS MOVIE. Gather the family!

Final Clip: My movie of interest in August is IN THE HEART OF THE SEA with Chris Hemsworth. This clip is a great look at that movie and the story behind it – Moby Dick.

That wraps up the look for August. When you come in from your summertime fun you can always turn on any of HBO’s channels or hit the subscriber site you’re signed up for and take in something interesting. This post, our site and our Schedule Page can always assist you. Enjoy!
