True-Blood-Read-Book-186x300Looking for a little something to get you through the True Blood offseason blues? Well, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve got a list of books that will help you while away the long months until our favorite fangers and bangers are back on television.

You’ve probably already inhaled the Charlaine Harris books which the series is based on, but if not, those start with Dead Until Dark. Now, if you’re looking for more company during the hiatus, I’ve got a few books you should take a peek at. Like True Blood, these books mostly take place in the modern world with a bit of a paranormal twist thrown in for fun.

Diana Rowland’s Kara Gillian series (Mark of the Demon)

Kara Gillian is a Louisiana cop. She’s also a demon summoner. The demons she summons range from helpful to hostile, and follow strict rules regarding their interaction on the human plane. Over the course of the series she uncovers arcane-wielding serial killers and gets into heaps of trouble. These books have plenty of butt-whooping and lots of steamy scenes too.

Moon-Called-True-Blood-181x300Patricia Briggs’s Mercy Thompson series (Moon Called)

If you can’t get enough of werewolves, this one’s for you. Mercy Thompson is actually a coyote shapeshifter, but she lives in the territory of a werewolf pack in Washington State with an alpha who can’t keep his nose out of her business. By day, she’s a mechanic with a bit of an attitude. She takes odd jobs (sometimes reluctantly) solving difficult problems in the paranormal world. Not quite as sexy as some of the others on the list but there’s tons of action and a great story arc.

Lilith Saintcrow’s Dante Valentine series (Working for the Devil)

A few hundred years from now in the futuristic Saint City, psions and non-human paranormals are recognized by the government and put to work. Danny Valentine is a necromancer, making her way by communicating with those who have passed on. She’s also a bounty hunter—one of the best at bringing in high profile criminals. Her life is thrown into chaos when a demon knocks on her front door and tells her the Devil wants to talk to her. This series has great fight scenes and a good number of spicy moments.

Storm_FrontJim Butcher’s The Dresden Files (Storm Front)

In Chicago there’s only one wizard-for-hire, and his name is Harry Dresden. He’s a sort of magician private investigator who helps the cops solve unusual crimes. This one’s got it all, vampires, werewolves, angels, fairies, and just about any other supernatural creature you can think of. These books have a very robust magical world, but don’t rank very high on the hot scale.

Seanan McGuire’s October Daye series (Rosemary and Rue)

Toby Daye is a fae half-breed, and that’s just the start of her problems. She lives in San Francisco, where the world of the fairy is separated from our world by only a thin veil. When she’s not paying her bills as a supermarket cashier, she’s a knight of the realm navigating the perilous world of fairy politics. These books have very little in the way actual nookie, but there’s quite a bit of sexual tension.

Kiss-of-Midnight-182x300Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed series (Kiss of Midnight)

To round out the group I’m giving you a vampire book. Be forewarned, the vampires in this world are quite a bit different from True Blood. Rather than being dead, these vamps are sort of a parallel species. Each book features a different couple, with an overarching story that pits the warriors of the Midnight Breed against an ever-multiplying band of rogue vampires bent on murder and mayhem. These have lots of sex, but not so much in the way of action.

That should be enough stories to keep you out of trouble into 2013, when True Blood comes back for Season Six!

Thanks for the recommendations. I’d add Karen Marie Monings Fever series for those looking for an intense ride. 5 books in the series, but pay off is well worth it.

Thanks for the additional rec! The Fever Series has been on my radar for a while but I haven’t read them yet. I’ll have to go find them now I think.

Both the Mercy Thompson and The Dresden Files are great. I’ve read all the Mercy books, except the latest, and they’re the kind of books that you end up passing out from exhaustion next to, at 5 in the morning, after telling yourself, “just one more page” all night long. Harry’s story (of the Dresden Files) is still fresh after 6 books, and the main character is absolutely hilarious. Also, it’s noteworthy, that The Dresden Files audio books are read by none other than James Marsters – and boy, oh boy, can that man read!

Oh yeah! I love the Dresden audiobooks. That’s how I experienced the first several of those books. The only downside to them is that I think they have ruined any possibility of watching a Dresden movie for me unless they cast Marsters as Harry.

That is exactly why I’ve been putting off watching the Dresden series
