People_BetteMidlerHBO Films has added another exciting project to its slate and not one but four A-listers plan to do it. The Divine Miss M. herself, Bette Midler, is to personify Mae West in the near future under the direction of William Friedkin via a script to be scribed by Harvey Fierstein. It is all under the watchful eye of executive producer Jerry Weintraub. All four are heavy hitters in the business and Mae West could hold her own too, back in the day.

The developing movie, to be titled MAE WEST, is based on West’s autobiography “Goodness Had Nothing to Do With It.”  Brought to light by such sites as Deadline.com we are reminded that Midler & West took similar paths to fame. They both started on the theater stage before making it to Hollywood in their 30’s utilizing a bawdy, bouncy style of humor.

People_MaeWestWe have seen Midler’s brand of humor before on HBO. There was the BETTE MIDLER SHOW in 1976, DIVINE MADNESS of 1980 and BETTE MIDLER IN CONCERT: DIVA LAS VEGAS in 1997. While we’re at it, Mr. Friedkin was director of the classic The Exorcist and HBO’s TALES FROM THE CRYPT. Even Mr. Fierstein dabbled on the channel with HAPPILY EVER AFTER: FAIRY TALES FOR EVERY CHILD and THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW and Mr. Weintraub just won Emmys for BEHIND THE CANDELABRA.

To this writer this sounds like a fun project just perfect for Bette Midler and her character is one of the most scandalous and shiniest stars in the 1930’s Hollywood pantheon. Coupled with the men behind the scenes this sounds like a winning production already. I hope it comes to fruition, don’t you?

Loved Mae West’s sense of humour and her movies! She was a woman ahead of her time. Same with Better Midler! Can’t wait to see this project come to fruition!

Oh wow, that’s two people i would have never put together – Freidkin and Midler. I’m sold, if not for just the curiosity of it!
