TrueDetective-GoldLogoNow we know that supposedly any day now HBO will announce something official regarding the second season of the detective anthology series by Nic Pizzolatto. This writer thought it would be fun to let the rumors fly one more time before then.

We have not been poking around the rumor mill and listing every little item that has been speculated, but since Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain’s name have been dropped other noted names have been bandied about as well. How about Joaquin Phoenix, Christian Bale, Michael Fassbender and/or Josh Brolin? Cate Blanchett also surfaced as a good possibility. The latest buzz has touched many sites including The Wrap stating that Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch are in the running for the leads.

All we know for sure though, at this point, is that the second season is setting up for a 40-ish lead detective and a female one in her 30s; she is not necessarily a partner of his. There is also a third player described as a 20-something cop. Mr. Pizzolatto told the NPR that –

“The characters are all new, but I’m deeply in love with each of them. We’ve got the entire series broken out with a couple of scripts, and we’ll probably start casting in earnest in the coming months.”

Now we can get behind any one of these actors as long as the writing is as solid as the Season One’s scripts were. Any other late hour speculations you wish to throw in the ring? You can do so in the comments below.

People_WilliamFriedkinThe bigger news, at least for me, is the task of directing. It was awesome that Cary Joji Fukunaga was able to direct the entire first season. His vision for the entire arc added a great cohesiveness to the story. The chance of anyone being able to do so in the next season however is unlikely. Not a lot of talk of directors has been discussed with plot and actors taking the attention, until now. Now, Academy Award winning director William Friedkin (pictured) may be considering directing an episode or two.

He spoke about the possibility at an event called the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. He is quoted as saying –

“I am considering it. I like this writer [Nic Pizzolatto] very much. I’ve met him, and he’s the real deal as far as I’m concerned. Now, all the new seasons are different so I’m not committed—this new season has nothing to do with the last one. Except for him and his sensibility, which I think is extraordinary.”

“I’m…I can’t say much more at this time. But I’m a fan of Pizzolatto’s writing, even though this will not be a continuation of what was done before with [Matthew] McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. So what you can say is I’m a huge fan of his writing, I’ve met with him, I like him, I like the direction he’s taking with this.”

That sounds rather promising. I wish he’d take on the entire season, but would settle for a couple of episodes from him. Think about it, he is the director of The French Connection, The Exorcist and To Live And Die In L. A. Don’t forget the second season is said to take place in southern California. The creator said earlier that –

“It takes place in California — not Los Angeles but some of the much lesser-known venues of California — and we’re going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambiance of the place, much like we did in Season 1.”

Friedkin sounds like a perfect fit for some TRUE DETECTIVE. What do you think?

Again, we hang on for any word that makes these above rumors reality. HBOWatch has eager writers to pounce on any official news as it comes available. Stay close to this site for the latest, and in the meantime, keep those speculations coming. Someone is bound to be right.

I’d be stoked to see Leonardo Dicaprio do any HBO series. Scorsese has said he enjoys working with him, and he has been my favourite actor since… Well always. That’s why I was thoroughly disappointed when he wasn’t in Boardwalk Empire, as that show is pretty much the best show ever made hands down.

Woody Harrelson stole season 1 for me. Matthew Mcconaughey was brilliant yes, but I gotta give Woody the credit.

If it were me, and I got to cast whoever I wanted to for a script I’ve never seen or know the direction of, I’d love to see Daniel Day Lewis throw himself into the role of the lead on this show. Then I’d probable support him with someone like Sam Rockwell or Casey Affleck I could see handling the supporting role in a dark drama like this.

As for the rumour mill, I would really like to see how Brad Pitt and or Colin Farrel handle a truly gritty role like this. I can’t wait for season 2. True Detective is the only show I’ve seen that comes anywhere close to the quality of The Sopranos for me.

Yes, he looks like the strong frontrunner at this point.

There are probably 2 more big names at least to put around him. I think he could succeed if he was supported.

Whenever Colin is allowed to use his Dublin accent, he’s great. Putting on an accent seems to sap his acting strength.

Hopefully he can be an Irish guy in Season 2!

Colin Farrell has the capability to do some decent acting. Lets hope that if given the kind of material that the Season 1 cast was given, he will rise to the occasion.
