aaron-sorkin-s-the-newsroom-224x300Jef takes a look at several HBO programs that are set to air on HBO soon and speculates as to when we might actually get to watch them!  For all of the most current HBO premiere and air times check out our newly revamped HBO Schedule page.

I know it is awfully early to speculate what is going to air on HBO a year from now, but there is an available timeslot HBO needs to fill.  HBO has a history of slating new series to premiere in March/April; TREME, IN TREATMENT and DEADWOOD premiered during that time of year.  Back in March 2006 HBO started a show that lasted five seasons.  It was BIG LOVE.  After it was cancelled the channel was looking to fill the slot and gambled on a show called LUCK.  It was a short streak of bad luck that has ended that show after just one season.  So HBO now needs a show to take its place in the spring of next year.

Just what could it be? It is too soon for even HBO to say but we can look at some projects that are in various stages of development and wonder if they might be what we are watching next March through May.  The one show we can out-rule is Aaron Sorkin’s THE NEWSROOM.   It is expected to hit the airwaves in June of this year. One source, the Internet Movie Database, even has an exact premiere date of Sunday, June 24th.

Dark-Tower-series-tv-hbo-198x300Stephen King’s DARK  TOWER has had recent buzz for both a movie and a series.  Since it is based out of Warner Bros. it looks promising for HBO.  But would the movie shoot first? It is safe to say that we won’t see this project in the first quarter of 2013. Actually, there are quite a few projects that we have heard very little about except a vague “in development.”  Supposedly, Ron Howard has a western; Ben Stiller has a D. C. set drama and James Gandolfini has a series in the works.  If I had my preference I’d be eager for it to be AMERICAN GODS from the mind of Neil Gaiman.  I doubt if it is likely to be the one as this work hasn’t had any new buzz for quite awhile.  Besides, its plot seems quite daunting to execute.  Can it be ready in time?  No, I don’t think so.

I will, however, offer a guess of which series will premiere in the spring of 2013.  The show will either be THE CORRECTIONS based on the bestselling novel by Jonathan Franzen which seems to have cast & crew all lined up or THE VIAGRA DIARIS from Darren Starr, once a replacement for Goldie Hawn gets on board.  Oh, and I would be remiss if I didn’t offer one more guess – it could be a series completely off the radar or maybe, HBO won’t offer a series at all and give us a strong mini-series instead. Whatever airs I’ll be there and so will HBOWatch.

We’ll just have to wait and see what develops…. or you can continue the speculations via your comments.

That is why it is called “speculation”, we just don’t know what they are going to offer us in March 2013. I’ll stay with my prediction that they will premiere something new then.

Yeah HBO does that, Jef. They’ll just come out of nowhere with something like Veep or Girls. No one could have predicted those 365 days ago and here we are– about to watch the premiere!

Here’s what I hope will take the January – March slot: Game of Thrones season 3….followed by season 4 in the Spring (April – June). LOL. I think the plan is to film seasons 3 and 4 back to back this summer (assuming it gets renewed) to cover Book 3. If that’s the case, I really hope they air all 20 episodes in the same year. I’m 100% positive if they get to the RW they will -have- to renew for at least one more season.

However, what’s the chance they’ll air both seasons back to back?

Of all the new projects, I’m most excited about The Corrections. The Dark Tower seems like it -could- be good, but I worry about how they’re doing movies and TV show. Also, the plot itself seems very vague (guy searching for a tower).

I’m hoping Dark Tower is very surreal and visually amazing. It’s not all in the desert with a cowboy either. The story hops around between several characters in different times/dimensions. But yeah, the pilot might be a bit worrisome unless it just looks/feels amazing it might play as “slow and weird”

You’re off base. Game of Thrones will almost definitely be renewed, so that’ll take up one hour of next spring. And while there’s no guarantee that Girls and Veep will be successful enough to be renewed, these days it isn’t likely for HBO to end a show after only one season (bizarre situation with Luck aside). So the Sunday spring schedule is already filled. On the other hand, with Luck and Eastbound and Down ending this year there’s a wide open spot for a new drama and comedy in the winter. That’s likely where you’ll see the new shows. The Corrections will most likely be the new drama; not likely HBO would turn down a project with that kind of talent, and if they’re going to start shooting the series in June like McGregor said (assuming it’s picked up) then it would be ready for January. The comedy slot is a bit more open; as far as I know, we don’t have much information for how far along any of their in-development comedies are. They could go with a number of them, or they could leave the slot empty. Who knows? But the rest of the year, at least on Sunday, should be pretty much filled. Beyond spring, True Blood and The Newsroom will both likely be back next summer, and in the fall the same applies to Boardwalk Empire and Treme. Unless HBO puts some stuff on Mondays (which they do if they need to, as with Enlightened, but they haven’t had success there and probably don’t want to do it) their only free spots for next year will be in the winter.

Yeah I’m not of the mind that they’re struggling for programming either. But I do wonder if HBO will branch into Mondays or even some other Weekday. Seems like we at least need something to replace Luck! Plus there are long stretches where there isn’t really a major Sunday drama on HBO. Let’s fill those slots!
