James Hibberd of Entertainment Weekly has revealed that Icelandic band Sigur Rós has been cast in Game of Thrones.  Hibberd writes:

Thrones has landed Icelandic art-pop sensation Sigur Rós to appear in season four. Jón Þór “Jónsi” Birgisson, Georg Hólm and Orri Páll Dýrason are currently shooting an appearance on the Thrones set in Croatia. What will the band mates do? Will they play a song? Might a bowed guitar be involved?

This continues the tradition of the producers’ favorite musicians being included in the show in some way. In season 2, The National recorded a version of ‘The Rains of Castamere’, which was played over the credits of Blackwater. In season 3, The Hold Steady recorded a version of ‘The Bear and the Maiden Fair’, which was played over the credits of Walk of Punishment.  In addition, Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol and Will Champion of Coldplay both had cameos during season 3. Sigur Rós also have been cast, but will they also play their rendition of a Westerosi song? Let the speculation begin!

Game of Thrones Season 4 will premiere in spring of 2014.  We’ll provide an exact air date here when we have it.

UPDATE: So it really happened!  And here is the track if you missed it:

A bit more from HBO today:

“It was a great experience for us and fun to meet the cast of the show that we have all been following for a long time,” said Georg Holm of Sigur Ros. “The meanest person in television history, King Joffrey, is played by the sweetest guy Jack Gleeson. It was a brilliant ‘hurry up and wait’ time for us and we would do it again in a heartbeat.

“It felt like a natural thing to make our version of ‘Rains of Castamere.’ We probably managed to create the gloomiest version so far. It is maybe not the happiest wedding song, but we think that it fit the scene very well.”

The track will also be available on the Game of Thrones Season 4 soundtrack, available digitally on June 10, and on CD July 1st. More details on the soundtrack will be announced at a later date.

This will be interesting. I’m not quite sure Sigur Rós will be, but if they’re going to perform a song, it sounds great! One thing D&D do is keep in suspense with casting; who would have seen Gatiss as Tycho Nestoris?

I’m interested to hear people thoughts. From what I can remember from the books everything I would’ve speculated him to be apart of doesn’t seem to be the direction they’re headed.
