Kim Cattrall returns to HBO Canada this Sunday 7/20 in new comedy Sensitive Skin. She’s best known as Samantha Jones in Sex and the City. Both Kim and Don McKellar visited parts of Canada to promote the new series. After an advanced screening in Vancouver of the first two episodes of the new comedy, there was a twenty minute Q&A session.

When asked how this new project came about, Kim said that it was about two years after Sex and the City when she was approached about doing an adaptation of the British series of the same name. It was the first show she’d ever binge-watched, taking in the entire first season in three hours straight. Kim tried to bring the show to HBO in the United States, but the product did not adapt well. It was either “too faithful” to the original, or seemed to be too slapstick at times. She was in Toronto when she met up with Don and thought he would be perfect for the part of Al Jackson. The project became a Canadian adaptation at that point.

Don’s attraction to Sensitive Skin was how the series is genuinely surprising, and hints that there are more surprises to come than what was shown that night. When looking into new projects, he looks for something that is both “moving and funny”. Sensitive Skin fits those criteria.

ssmirrorThe series revolves around the lives around Davina and Al Jackson, a couple who have been married for thirty years. They sell their family home, move to the city into a one bedroom apartment, and attempt to start a new life. However, starting over isn’t as easy as it may have seemed. Not only do they try to give their empty apartment a new image, but their own images come into question as the age of their marriage and themselves as individuals becomes a catalyst to the decisions they make. They’re not as young as they once were, but that doesn’t mean they take it lightly. They challenge who they are against what they once were and who they want to be.

Honestly, I never watched Sex and the City because it didn’t seem like I would fit in with the target audience. Even Kim Cattrall said that she didn’t want to compare Sensitive Skin to Sex and the City, but there was a lot that she learned from her experiences on Sex and the City. The characters are well-developed from the first episode.

I expected a typical “chick-flick comedy” where I could be checking the time and counting down until it was over. I was glad to be wrong and even found myself laughing loudly about halfway through the first episode. For a glimpse of Sensitive Skin, check out the trailer (Note: The trailer can only be accessed by internet users within Canada itself).

sscoupleThis new original series premieres on HBO Canada on Sunday, July 20 at 8PM ET/MT. For the binge-watchers, the entire season, which consists of 6 episodes, will be available On-Demand for HBO Canada subscribers the same day. There’s no need to wait until the last episode airs to watch from beginning to end.

Maybe, you and Jason can team up to give us a review after the 6-episode season runs?

I think we should just reiterate the point that – SENSITIVE SKIN is not available in the United States on any of HBO’s channels or on HBOGo.
