HBO Documentary Film: AN APOLOGY TO ELEPHANTS

HBO Documentary Film: AN APOLOGY TO ELEPHANTS

Overview: Elephants, both the Asiatic and the African for centuries, have been adored, have inspired great works of art, and even have been revered as gods, yet they have also been treated with cruelty. AN APOLOGY TO ELEPHANTS explores the abuse of these ancient and intelligent animals and shows how some people are reversing the trend. It describes the often-brutal treatment elephants undergo when they are trained to perform, the psychological trauma they suffer and the physical damage done by inadequate living conditions in some zoos and circuses. In addition to this footage of elephants in the wild and in captivity, AN APOLOGY TO...

Game of Thrones Season 3; Episode 4, “And Now His Watch is Ended”

Game of Thrones Season 3; Episode 4, “And Now His Watch is Ended”

The Good I’d like to give a great big high five to first time Game of Thrones director, Alex Graves. I felt that “And Now His Watch is Ended” was the best episode of the season, so far. I’m very pleased that we’ll get to see a second episode directed by Graves, “Kissed by Fire,” which will air next Sunday.  While episodes 1 and 2 were excruciatingly slow, episode 3, “Dark Wings, Dark Words,” was a big step in the right direction. However, this week, the fourth episode, blew them all out of the water for me. I’ve read again and again that last week’s closing scene was powerful; however, I found it to be highly...

HBO Films: MARY AND MARTHA Review

HBO Films: MARY AND MARTHA Review

Overview:  HBO’s press release states that Hilary Swank stars as Mary and Brenda Blethyn stars as Martha, an American interior designer and British housewife who have little in common apart from the one thing they wish they didn’t – both have lost sons to malaria. When the two mothers meet in Africa, they bond over their shared loss while struggling with their grief and the strains on their marriages. Forging a deep friendship, they dedicate themselves to the cause of malaria prevention at great personal cost. Enlisting the help of Mary’s estranged father,(played by James Woods) a prominent politician, the two women beseech both the...

VICE: Episode 03 Guns and Ammo – Review

VICE: Episode 03 Guns and Ammo – Review

Overview: Collectively, episode 3 is entitled “Guns & Ammo.” The first segment under this theme is called simply GUN SCHOOL. In the piece we go to the New Life Baptist Church & Academy in Albuquerque, NM, where Pastor Larry Allen preaches guns and teaches guns. The Academy is a Christian School for pre-K through High School and part of the curriculum teaches how to be armed for the evil that is at hand. That means not just spiritually but physically. It means taking charge of your life and taking out the violent threat before it takes you out.  A number of faculty and administration in fact are packing heat to do just that and...

VICE Given Two More Episodes In Season One

VICE Given Two More Episodes In Season One

VICE was originally given eight (8) installments in its freshman season on HBO, however that has since been bumped up to ten (10). The additional episod es may be due to the healthy numbers for the show but I’m not quite sure if that is the case. It could be that they wanted to generate a bit of publicity for the season finale since the   closing story is a piece that has already made the news. HBO has stated that viewership for the second edition of VICE, which debuted Friday, 04.12, improved 78% over its premiere, attracting 931,000 viewers and based on preliminary data, the series has already achieved an average per episode gross...

HBO Documentary Film: WHICH WAY IS THE FRONT LINE FROM HERE?

Overview: Technically the full title of this documentary is WHICH WAY IS THE FRONT LINE FROM HERE? THE LIFE AND TIME OF TIM HETHERINGTON. It is a portrait of the acclaimed war photographer and filmmaker who lost his life out on the job on 04.20.2011. He chronicled the human condition concentrated down to its rawest and purest form when his fellow beings faced conflict and war. His work spanned a number of films and photo essays. His most noted work was the Academy Award nominated Restrepo in the Best Documentary category. That nominee was co-directed by Sebastian Junger, who is also the director of this film on the life of Tim...

More Details on HBO’s American Gods Series

More Details on HBO’s American Gods Series

All has been quiet on the American Gods front for some time now. HBO itself has not commented on the series at all while Neil Gaiman has periodically given updates on the script. From what we can tell the project is still moving forward and Gaiman has been working hard on getting the script right for the premium cable network we all love. The latest comes from the Cambridge International Student Film Festival last month where Neil took control of the festival’s official Twitter account to dish out a few details about the upcoming series: -The premiere episode of American Gods will be a lot like the opening chapters of the book, but...

Development Slate – HBO Films: BONE WARS

Development Slate – HBO Films: BONE WARS

Not always, but usually the development news we gather makes it into a super post detailing the latest in development deals, series commitments and casting news. However, on occasion, we give attention to a work in the planning stages for HBO that really intrigues us here at HBOWatch by giving it a post of its own.  So is the case with this post. See, if you find it as interesting as we do. Now, admittedly there is not much news to go on here, but I’ll flesh it out to show you an interesting plot, a smart production team and a strong cast surrounding this pending project for HBO. All that should make a detailed post drawing your...

The Future is Coming: Google Fiber adds HBO, Cinemax

The Future is Coming: Google Fiber adds HBO, Cinemax

Brace yourselves… The Future is Coming. Commentators and cable cord cutters around the web have been clamoring for HBO to release HBO Go as a standalone product so that users without a cable or satellite contract can still access HBO’s programming. Well today… that still didn’t happen. But what did happen seems to us to be a step in the right direction. HBO will now be available through Google’s new “Fiber” ISP. The super-fast internet service infrastructure being constructed by Google is only available in Kansas City right now but will be expanding to Austin, TX later on. For $20 (close to...

Game of Thrones Season 3 Review: Episode 3 – Walk of Punishment

Game of Thrones Season 3 Review: Episode 3 – Walk of Punishment

This review should be prefaced by congratulating David Benioff on his first foray into the world of directing. There were some beautifully shot sequences (Theon’s chase being a highlight), and the direction helped in making this the best episode of Game of Thrones since Blackwater. Walk of Punishment finally sees the various story lines taking action once again, and the overall plot moves decidedly forward. The episode opens on a somber note, as Lord Hoster Tully is laid to rest after a long, drawn-out sickness. I found that this type of introduction to a new location and new characters was an interesting way to open an episode, and...
