HBO Documentary Films: HERBLOCK – THE BLACK & THE WHITE

HBO Documentary Films: HERBLOCK – THE BLACK & THE WHITE

Overview: For 55 years, Herbert L. Block’s signature “Herblock” was affixed to memorable cartoons that were published daily in the Washington Post and syndicated throughout the country in more than 1,800 newspapers. A true patriot, he elevated editorial cartoons to a level rivaling and, in critical ways, surpassing prose journalism, giving “a voice to the voiceless” through strokes of a pen. In HERBLOCK – THE BLACK & THE WHITE, actor Alan Mandell portrays the cartoonist (who died in 2001) in scenes scripted from his speeches and interviews, and filmed in a re-creation of Herblock’s Washington Post office, filled with his...

Girls Season Three, Episode Four: Dead Inside

Girls Season Three, Episode Four: Dead Inside

The aptly titled fourth episode of the already magnificient third season of GIRLS starts with Hannah finding out that her publisher, David (the crazy little guy who through Ray across a table last week) was found dead in the Hudson River without any explanation. Hannah being Hannah she ambles home and admits to Adam and Jessa that she doesn’t feel sad or numb, she is merely concerned about what is going to happen to her e-book. Classic Hannah. Thus starts a theme to the episode. Jessa tells Shosh about her friend, a girl called Season, (only Jessa would have a friend called Season, right?) who died by choking on her own vomit “or...

LOOKING for the Uncut (S1 E2) Review

LOOKING for the Uncut (S1 E2) Review

There is a long standing tradition of HBO being the network who pushes it’s viewers out of their comfort level, encouraging them to accept aspects of our society that might not be the most conventional. They’ve been doing this for so long, it’s almost expected when they premiere a new show. In that aspect, Looking has not disappointed. As a show that revolves around gay culture, it gives a voice to a powerful community in our society that has gone unheard for far to long in mainstream media. And while it’s stirred up a lot of controversy, especially when one focuses on the sex scenes, it’s doing exactly what HBO intended. It’s...

HBO Tweaks Schedule for Super Bowl Sunday

HBO Tweaks Schedule for Super Bowl Sunday

The Home Box Office audience is a sophisticated bunch.  So it may not have occurred to you that the game of football may interfere with your Sunday night television watching plans like Richard Sherman on a fade-pass to Crabtree at the back of the end zone.   Actually the normal HBO Sunday schedule will air as planned on Super Bowl Sunday minus True Detective which will be taking a break that week with the newest episode of Girls at 10PM and Looking, episode two airing at 10:30.  The change here will be that HBO will air new episodes of those shows on SATURDAY night starting at 10PM (their normal time).  This means you can watch them any...

Nic Pizzolatto of TRUE DETECTIVE Going Forward with HBO

Nic Pizzolatto of TRUE DETECTIVE Going Forward with HBO

HBO has officially signed up Nic Pizzolatto, the creator and sole writer of TRUE DETECTIVE, to a two year development deal. Also, with the fact that it was HBO’s most watched series debut in over three years, TRUE DETECTIVE is likely to get a second season. HBO has yet to confirm that detail but Deadline.com reports that Mr. P. is preparing a draft of a second go-around to HBO executives. As sole writer of the series will he have the time to develop other fare? We will have to wait to see on that. If nothing else we will settle for more TRUE DETECTIVE. Here is what Pizzolatto said at the Television Critic Association event earlier this...

8 HBO Characters You Can’t Help But LOVE

8 HBO Characters You Can’t Help But LOVE

Perhaps you love that you hate them, or maybe you hate that you love them. Whatever your weird love/hate relationship with these characters happens to be, one thing is for sure, you have some form of love for them… I think. Jimmy Darmody: Boardwalk Instead of choosing the main man on Boardwalk, Nucky Thompson, I opted for Jimmy Darmody instead. The reason is simple. Right through the first two seasons of Boardwalk, in every scene he appeared, Michael Pitt stole the show. Portraying Jimmy ever so dramatically, Pitt is a phenomenally gifted actor. As odd as it was tragic, Jimmy lived a life steeped in controversy and anguish. His extremely...

Movie Review: “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone”

Movie Review: “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone”

If you’re a fan of magicians, magic acts, and all the insanity of Las Vegas magic shows, “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” might be a good movie for you to check out Saturday, January 25th, when it premiers on HBO. The movie focuses on the eponymous Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carrell), his friendship with Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi), magic act assistant “Nicole”, actually known as Jane (Olivia Wilde), crazy, Criss Angel-ish magic/freak show act Steve “The Brain Rapist” Gray (Jim Carrey), casino owner Doug Munny (James Gandolfini), and magician legend Rance Holloway (Alan Arkin). The standouts of the...

No Season 2 for Merchant’s Hello Ladies

No Season 2 for Merchant’s Hello Ladies

HBO has opted out of a second season of Stephen Merchant’s Hello Ladies.  We’re actually not sure whether a Hello Ladies season 2 was even on the table but Deadline now confirms that the show will end with a special similar to that made for Life’s Too Short, another Merchant project on HBO. At HBOWatch, many of us enjoyed the series and thought it was quite funny.  We reviewed several episodes here if you’re interested.  We’ll let you know when the special gets a firm date and if and when the compete set of episodes make’s its way to DVD and Blu-Ray. We hope Mr. Merchant continues with HBO in some...

Girls Season 3, Episode 3 – She Said OK

Girls Season 3, Episode 3 – She Said OK

Episode 3 finds Hannah and Adam’s blissful existence rocked by the arrival of Adam’s sister, Caroline (Gabby Hoffman). Caroline’s boyfriend has left her, rather abruptly, and she finds herself adrift, without a home to call her own. Meanwhile, it’s Hannah’s twenty-fifth birthday, and she and her posse head to a bar in Brooklyn for a gala celebration, which has been put on by Marnie, and paid for by Hannah’s parents. The party is just as painful and awkward as you might expect, complete with forced karaoke and a fist fight. Let’s start with Caroline, as, if you’ve watched the episode, her image...

LOOKING: Series Premiere Review

LOOKING: Series Premiere Review

Okay and another new comedy series gets underway. There has been quite a bit of buzz about LOOKING; some call it the “gay GIRLS” and many say it is the type of show long in the making and that the likes of it haven’t been seen since Queer as Folk in the U. K and its Showtime reboot here in the States. The show runners, creator/writer/producer Michael Lannan and producer/director Andrew Haigh, state that it is not about gays just that the characters are gay. I don’t know about any of that going into the series premiere. But I am sure an opinion can and will be quickly formed. On a simple level it is about three guys living their lives...

TRUE DETECTIVE: Sn. 1 Episode Two Review

TRUE DETECTIVE: Sn. 1 Episode Two Review

Well now, we have our crime and met the key players. Get out that notebook, Taxman and let’s recall the scene. It is 1997 and we have a ritualistic murder complete with a ‘devil trap’ and a specifically poised victim. We have our detectives on the case, Hart and Cohle, two diverse and troubled individuals. They clash but they have a case to solve. In 2012, we learn that their partnership didn’t last and that another murder like the first one has occurred. Now, is it a copy-cat crime or did the perpetrator they supposedly nabbed in 1997 get out or was the wrong man jailed? And just what did happen with their relationship anyway? Am I...

Artist Creates Stunning , Feudal Japan Inspired Game of Thrones Artwork

Artist Creates Stunning , Feudal Japan Inspired Game of Thrones Artwork

We’ve showcased some amazing artists on HBO Watch over the years but we were floored when we stumbled across these original works by Seiji.  He took some epic scenes from Game of Thrones and world of Westeros and re-imagined them as feudal Japan inspired art.  WARNING: some of these scenes may depict spoilers from Book 3, A Storm of Swords.  Though I’ve taken a look myself and I would say that nothing is really spoiled if you’ve seen seasons 1-3 unless I’m missing something.   Take a look: Bran Stark and Hodor Journey North Mother of Dragons The Execution of Eddard Stark Jon Snow duels Qhorin Halfhand as...

Movie Review: Oblivion

Movie Review: Oblivion

I guess it’s a big trend these days to shoot and release movies that have that post-apocalyptic or zombie virus trend to them. This certainly is the case with “Oblivion.” Oddly enough, guess who happens to star in this movie? Yes, our beloved Jaime Lannister, aka Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (who is becoming quite a household name in his own right). Of course, you have some heavy hitters who star in this movie – Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman and Melissa Leo. Former Bond gal Olga Kurlenko is also in it, as is the woman who portrayed Wallis Simpson in Madonna’s W/E, Andrea Riseborough. The premise to set movie: Earth has become a dead planet,...
