Jun 22, 2016

As many Game of Thrones fans know, the 9th episode of the season is usually a whopper. Ned’s beheading, battle of Blackwater, the Red wedding, the battle at the Wall, and Dany’s...

Silicon Valley Episode Three Review

Silicon Valley Episode Three Review

If Pied Piper’s compression algorithm began with odds equivalent to a snowball’s chance in hell, then maybe after this episode the thermostat just dropped a degree. Maybe it won’t melt and boil after all. Of course when you’re five guys in a kitchen on macbooks against a company clearly outfitted as a facsimile of Google, that doesn’t mean it’s going to get any easier. Since the discovery of Nucleus, Gavin Belson’s hate-fueled response to Pied Piper, the immediate threat has subsided since the copy being reverse engineered is inferior and limited. But now the race is on not only to beat Nucleus to...

Rape in the Great Sept of Baelor: An Analysis

Rape in the Great Sept of Baelor: An Analysis

*Warning: this post discuses a graphic sexual scene* In Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones, a scene involving Jaime and Cersei in the sept beside Joffrey’s body has gotten a lot of media attention. In this scene, you see Jaime ask everyone to leave so he can be alone with Cersei. She is grieving, sobbing over their son’s grave. He embraces her, comforts her as she cries, rocking her. She kisses him, they’re making out by Joffrey’s dead body, when she realizes where they are and stops the embrace and returns to crying over Joffrey, with her back to Jaime. Jaime hesitates and then asks “Why did God make me...

John Tuturro Replaces Robert De Niro in CRIMINAL JUSTICE

John Tuturro Replaces Robert De Niro in CRIMINAL JUSTICE

CRIMINAL JUSTICE was to be James Gandolfini’s series return to HBO. He was to play Jack Stone, an ambulance-chasing New York City attorney who gets in over-his-head when he takes on the case of a Pakistani accused of murdering a girl on the Upper West Side. HBO, at first passed on it, and then reconsidered and approved it.  The project came to a complete halt however after Gandolfini’s death, but HBO still wanted to move the work forward.  You might remember that it was then retooled as a miniseries with Robert De Niro attached to the Jack Stone role. Mr. De Niro has since dropped out of the project due to scheduling conflicts, but HBO...

Silicon Valley Season 2 to Receive Funding

Silicon Valley Season 2 to Receive Funding

Another HBO series is born!  There will be a second season of Silicon Valley on HBO.  We were particularly anxious about this renewal because new shows always have a tough time “breaking in” but it looks like Silicon Valley has done so and a season 2 will be made! LOS ANGELES, April 21, 2014 – HBO has renewed the comedy series SILICON VALLEY for a second season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. The renewals follow the recent two-season renewal of “Game of Thrones. Mike Judge (“Office Space,” “Beavis & Butt-head,” “King of the Hill”) brings his irreverent brand of...

HBO GO: Far, Far Away From Your Parents

HBO GO: Far, Far Away From Your Parents

HBO Go may be frustrating a few people at the moment due to it’s intermittent service around Game of Thrones episode premieres.  But all in all HBO Go is still the best way to watch all of your favorite HBO series from the past and present.  Today, though HBO launched a bevvy of hilarious commercials that remind you “it might be time for HBOGo“.  Most of them revolve around the awkwardness of watching intense scenes with your parents. Give them all a watch, we promise you’ll laugh: Girls Girls II Game of Thrones Game of Thrones II Curb Your Enthusiasm True Detective True Blood   Wow, I haven’t...

Game of Thrones 4.03 Review – Breaker of Chains

Game of Thrones 4.03 Review – Breaker of Chains

Directed by: Alex Graves Written by: David Benioff & D. B. Weiss My expectations for this episode were relatively reasonable considering the heart-stopping conclusion to prior episode. As an avid show watcher whose life is just a bit to busy to get around to reading the books, I still don’t think I’ve completely recovered from the way shocking way it ended. Overwhelming joy would be one way to put the way it left me feeling. As we entered this episode, I expected it to focus heavy on the falling out transpiring in King’s Landing after the well-anticipated (and perhaps overdue) death of King Joffrey and was pleasantly surprised...

First Clips from the Final Season of True Blood

First Clips from the Final Season of True Blood

HBO surprised us all with a very full Easter Sunday this year.  While some networks took a break the Home Box Office kept its foot firmly on the gas pedal with new episodes of “Game of Thrones,” “Veep,” and “Silicon Valley.” But not to be outdone, HBO also released the first ever clips from what will be the seventh and final season of “True Blood.” The only other teaser we’ve had for this season was HBO taking us through the Bon Temps graveyard and looking back at the multitude of graves caused by character deaths (eight BT citizens, vampires not included) with this as a final...

David Milch Still Onboard With HBO

David Milch Still Onboard With HBO

We know David Milch as the producer of classics like TV’s Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue as well as HBO’s DEADWOOD (2004-2006), JOHN FROM CINCINNATI (2007) and LUCK (2011-2012). Then, there was THE MONEY. The shows he has helmed for HBO haven’t had longevity, but that doesn’t mean he has given up on HBO as the place he wants to be. The show creator just recently signed an extended development deal for two more years with the network. Hopefully he will find a project that HBO will love and his relationship with the channel can continue. It all started with DEADWOOD which ended too soon after just three seasons. He went totally in...

HBO’s Easter Sunday is Hoppin’ as Usual

HBO’s Easter Sunday is Hoppin’ as Usual

We’ve been asked by a few concerned fans whether or not HBO would be maintaining regularly scheduled programming this weekend given the Easter holiday this Sunday. We’re happy to report that Game of Thrones, Veep and Silicon Valley will all be new, as planned this Easter Sunday!  Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 3 followed by Silicon Valley Episode 3 and then Veep Season 3, Episode 3 for those keeping tabs at home.  It all starts at 9PM on HBO but PST fans can catch it all on eastern time at 6PM PST on HBOGo assuming it doesn’t crash again! Need a taste of that sweet candy?  Here are the previews for the good stuff...

HBO Comedy Special: BILLY CRYSTAL’S 700 SUNDAYS

HBO Comedy Special: BILLY CRYSTAL’S 700 SUNDAYS

Here is a reminder of the next HBO Comedy Special to air as we shift gears from power hitter Mike Tyson to comedic champ Billy Crystal and his one man show. 700 SUNDAYS premieres Saturday, April 19 at 9:00pm ET. It is a retrospective look at the life and career (to date and still going strong) of one of comedy’s long standing entertainers and one of HBO’s favorites. In fact, the upcoming clip shows just how much Billy Crystal has been a part of HBO’s history. I’m old enough to remember these comedy appearances and specials as I have been around HBO just as long as Mr. C. Stand-up Comedy and Variety had a bigger presence on HBO back...

VICE Repeat After REAL TIME This Week

VICE Repeat After REAL TIME This Week

UPDATE: Real Time with Bill Maher was also a repeat this weekend.  Rest assured that Easter Sunday’s schedule will remain ALL NEW. No explanation has been given but HBO is skipping a new episode of VICE this week. The next installment is Episode 6 and it will debut Friday, April 25 at 11:00pm. That episode will look at the latest on legalizing marijuana and also about North Korean defectors. Episode 5 runs again this week with Shane Smith’s report on the Taliban University and Armageddon Now. Check it out if you haven’t. Or if you have seen it then here is some fresh VICE content to tide you...

True Detective is HBO’s Most Watched Freshman Series Ever

True Detective is HBO’s Most Watched Freshman Series Ever

Delayed figures on viewership trickled in this week and with it came a very uprising revelation:  True Detective is now HBO’s most watched freshman series of all time.  Yes, more than Game of Thrones season 1, yes more than The Sopranos opening season and so on and so forth. The show drew 11.9 million viewers per episode which barely beats out Six Feet Under for the title.  Game of Thrones still holds court for the most watched season of any HBO series with 14.4 million viewers in its third season (2013).  Here are some older numbers that don’t include that last number. There’s still no firm word on True Detective...

Veep Season 3: Episode 2

Veep Season 3: Episode 2

First, can I just say how jarring it is to go from Game of Thrones to Veep? Yet, that is what HBO is giving us on Sunday nights. From Westeros to Washington. Episode two of Veep begins with Mike. Oh, Mike. Still on his honeymoon, even if his “honeymoon” seems more like a stay-cation. Couldn’t Mike have done better than that? Maybe the beach? The Grand Canyon? A cruise? Yes, now that I think of it, there should really be a spin-off series with Mike, his wife, Gary, and Jonah on a year-long cruise. All four of them, stuck together on a boat, in the middle of the ocean, for a solid year. That would be comedy gold. Gold! Do you hear...
