The Knick: “The Golden Lotus”

Misery loves company. In every corner of this episode, people’s lives were unraveling; despair was potent and uncertainty palpable. Words escape me; I say this in the best possible way to...

This Just In: GETTING ON gets a Series Order

Another project we have been tracking makes it onto HBO; this one from the creators of BIG LOVE. Mark V. Olsen & Will Scheffer are returning to the channel with the U. S. version of GETTING ON. It derives from the BBC comedy that has appeared for three seasons. Pictured at right are the original’s creators/leads Joanne Scanlan, Vicki Pepperdine and Jo Brand who will serve as executive producers for HBO’s version as well. Here is a bit of a description pulled from our previous GETTING ON post and the link for the entire piece: The comedy takes place in a women’s geriatric extended care wing of a somewhat rundown hospital...

HBO Documentary Film: AMERICAN WINTER

HBO Documentary Film: AMERICAN WINTER

Overview: As the economy slowly recovers from the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, an increasing number of families are caught in a daily struggle to meet basic needs. At the same time, the social safety net intended to help those in crisis has been weakened by budget cuts, creating a perfect storm of greater need and fewer resources for the vulnerable. Viewed through the stories of eight families, AMERICAN WINTER reveals the devastating fallout of the mortgage meltdown, unemployment, the health care crisis and a shrinking social safety net. Included in the film are interviews with local economic experts, policy analysts,...

Martin to Cameo in GAME OF THRONES Season 3

Martin to Cameo in GAME OF THRONES Season 3

Executive Producer David Benioff made a brief statement claiming “You will see him” in Season 3 of GAME OF THRONES. The “him” is George R. R. Martin, creator of HBO’s acclaimed fantasy series. The two were holding court Tuesday night at an Evening With GAME OF THRONES event at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. The evening, presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, had a packed crowd as the producing team warmed people up for the show’s premiere on 03.31. It was not mentioned in what capacity Mr. Martin would appear onscreen so fans here at HBOWatch can speculate all they want. Will he be glimpsed as a background...

ENLIGHTENED: Cancelled After Just Two Seasons

ENLIGHTENED: Cancelled After Just Two Seasons

HBO has just lost that ENLIGHTENED feeling. I could also argue that America itself never felt so inclined because the show, sadly for me, has been dropped due to low ratings. Let me give you some numbers: Season One had a total of 0.17 million viewers and Season Two premiered on 01.13.23 with 300,000 viewers and concluded on 03.03.13 with 220,000. The viewing audience just dwindled to a number that caused HBO to take longer than usual to determine the fate of Mike White’s series resulting in the cancellation. The site TVLine had a Q & A with creator/writer White before the ruling. Here is an excerpt: TVLine asked – So I...

Girls Season 2: Totally Not Together, At All

Girls Season 2: Totally Not Together, At All

Love it or hate it, people are talking about Girls. One of the most original and arguably one of the most brilliantly written, shows on television, Lena Dunham and company have caught our attention. Watching the first few episodes of Season 1 was, dare I say, skin crawlingly uncomfortable. As the season progressed, however, the raw artfulness of Lena Dunham’s world began to shine through, overpowering the awkward factor and making me a true believer in the genius of Girls. The second Season was strikingly different. While Season 1 had a serious comedy lean, Season 2 was an emotional roller coaster, with episodes running the gamut...

HBO Films: MARY AND MARTHA Trailer

HBO Films: MARY AND MARTHA Trailer

You know the drill. In the way productions are promoted around here first comes the Tease and then comes the Trailer. We gave you the Tease for MARY AND MARTHA just the other day now here is the 1:26 Trailer for the HBO film for April. It appears to be a passionate character drama of these two mothers, played by Hilary Swank and Brenda Blethyn and their goal, which bonds them, to make a difference. This writer will give his usual ‘gut reaction’ review to this HBO Film presentation shortly after it premieres on Saturday,...

Modcloth now selling “Lena Denim” dress

Modcloth now selling “Lena Denim” dress

Though her style can be, ahem, questionable at best, Modcloth has nevertheless taken to Hannah’s wardorbe and decided to start selling a dress based on her affinity for denim. The aptly named “Lena Denim” dress is now available on Modcloth.com for $64.99. And not only the name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the 26 year old writer/director/actor/producer; the description for the dress reads: “Becoming the voice of your generation – or, perhaps, ‘a’ generation – is all about expressing yourself. Why not let your wardrobe in on the fun?” Well done, Modcloth. Well done. No word yet on if...

Like Guest other work this is a mockumentary-show...

On the next REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL on 03.19

On the next REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL on 03.19

I’ve decided to give recognition to REAL SPORT WITH BRYANT GUMBEL today. After all, the 03.19 edition of the show is installment 192 in a long record of top notch sports journalism. The other reason is because the March edition features a profile of former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson. Out of the 19 seasons of this show many a great profile and debate have aired and it is just a coincidence and a shame that we finally give notice to this show now; it is not because Tyson is featured though my news sources have drawn attention to this episode because of the Tyson report. Here is a description of the segments in the latest from Mr....

VEEP Season 2: Trailer # 2

VEEP Season 2: Trailer # 2

Now, we know most of you have tunnel vision for GAME OF THRONES but, HBO does have other programming out there that they want to remind you they have. VEEP is one such program coming soon. Here is the second trailer they released to remind you to catch the exploits of Vice President Selina Meyer and office-mates. The road to power….is a bumpy ride…and VP Meyer clearly hits every one of them when Season Two starts 04.14.

UPDATED: HBO Releases Another Game of Thrones Season 3 Trailer

UPDATED: HBO Releases Another Game of Thrones Season 3 Trailer

UPDATE 3/21: UPDATE:  And another: I guess good things come in threes cause we now have the third trailer for Season Three hitting the airwaves tonight before the Season Finale of Girls. The first two trailers, “War” and “Beast”, were released on Friday and we now have a third to add to the collection. Not quite sure why HBO decided to release all these trailers at once. Especially so close to the premiere. I’ve actually seen a few of these sprinkled in throughout regular TV commercials, but still seems like they have been a bit lagging on the trailer releases for this season. Oh well, who cares when it...

On All Fours: Did We Witness a Rape on Sunday’s Episode of Girls?

On All Fours: Did We Witness a Rape on Sunday’s Episode of Girls?

I think that HBO’s Girls is my favorite show. This is a big shocker to me, personally, as after watching the first episode, I really truly hated it. It was incredibly uncomfortable, but strangely fascinating, and like a car crash, I couldn’t bring myself to look away. As we approach the end of the second season, I find myself already mourning the loss of my Sunday nights with Hannah and company. In his March 12 recap of Girls Season 2, episode 9, Jacob Klein posed an interesting question to our readers. “Did Adam rape Natalia?” This is a question that my mind has been wandering back to revisit, even days later. After...

TWO New Game of Thrones Season 3 Spots

TWO New Game of Thrones Season 3 Spots

UPDATE I: HBO snuck another season 3 promo online tonight!  This one’s called: “The Beast”! HBO snuck another Game of Thrones trailer online tonight.  This shorter spot will most likely air with the season finale of Girls on Sunday night.  It also looks like one that could easily play on other networks as we get closer to the premiere on March 31st.  Here’s the spot: Alright so a little bit of new stuff in there. Can any book readers guess what some of the new scenes are? Here’s our favorite shot: UPDATE: And one...

Development Slate: Cate Blanchett To HBO and More

Development Slate: Cate Blanchett To HBO and More

It amazes me just how much news I can gather about HBO development options. Every week there is always some bit of news about deals & talks happening, pilots being commissioned and casting being done. It can get quite interesting and confusing keeping straight which projects get the fast track to series or just a pilot order and, of course, which ones get passed over. But, this diligent writer for HBOWatch keeps at it: here is the latest news. Cate Blanchett is Attached  to CANCER VIXEN Cate Blanchett, the actress behind such characters as Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films as well as Queen Elizabeth I and an...
