Our First Look at HBO Films: MUHAMMAD ALI’S GREATEST FIGHT

Our First Look at HBO Films: MUHAMMAD ALI’S GREATEST FIGHT

Coming this October to HBO is the latest HBO film presentation. It is entitled MUHAMMAD ALI’S GREATEST FIGHT and tells of an historic event in his life that rocked the nation. It was not the “Thrilla In Manila” bout or any other boxing event that gave him a tough tussle but his refusal to be enlisted into U. S. military service and his consequent appearance in front of the U. S. Supreme Court that put him out of commission. This all happened within the course of four years from the ages of twenty-six to twenty-nine in the midst of his pugilistic prime. He refused to serve military duty due to his religious beliefs and his opposition...

Arnold Rothstein and the 1919 World Series Fix

Arnold Rothstein and the 1919 World Series Fix

In light of the massive player suspensions recently doled out by Major League Baseball, now seems like the most appropriate (or inappropriate?) time to talk about the great Arnold Rothstein.  Anyone who is a true fan of baseball knows the name Arnold Rothstein.  It exists as an anathema, one of the ultimate curse words.  Everyone knows he fixed (set up who would win the games before they were played) the outcome of the 1919 World Series, when the Chicago White Sox played the Cincinnati Reds; the White Sox – later nicknamed the Black Sox – threw the World Series and lost, and eight of their players were forever banned from the sport of...

There are three worlds from which the paying customer can play out their fantasies, West World,...

Movie Review: Les Miserables

Movie Review: Les Miserables

If you had any investment, emotional or otherwise, in this movie when it was in theaters then you’ll know that critically it was a mixed bag of some people loving it and some people liking the music but hating the movie it’s wrapped in. Over the time between now and then everyone’s had their voice heard over what was wrong and what was right with this movie that going into it further just feels like I’d be echoing what people who do this job better than me have said. The cinematography doesn’t work, the story skips around unevenly, the story shifting from Jean Valjean to Marius and Cosette is frustrating because they’re empty...

In Defense of Keepin’ It Covered Up

In Defense of Keepin’ It Covered Up

I recently interviewed for a new position that I had been recommended for because I blog here with HBO Watch. My now boss asked me what I blogged about. I named several shows including “Game of Thrones.” His answer? “Oh yeah, I know that medieval porn.” I was ready to crawl away from the interview with the last scraps of my dignity after that because, in many ways, he had hit the nail on the head: “Game of Thrones” is pretty pornographic at times. Numerous sex scenes, brothels, whores… And what is “True Blood” but crazy sexy vampires? And “Boardwalk Empire” – Gillian even runs an upscale whorehouse and Lucy Danziger...

HBO Documentary Film: GLICKMAN

Overview:  Before Marv Albert and Bob Costas, there was Marty Glickman. Featuring archival footage and interviews with such notables as Marv Albert, Bob Costas, Bill Bradley, Jim Brown, Frank Gifford, Larry King, Jerry Stiller, New York Giants co-owner John Mara and others, the film tells the story of a man who overcame prejudice...
