Jul 26, 2014

Many times in reviews the term “mindless entertainment” is thrown around, with such ease that the term itself has become a cliché. However for a film as clichéd and campy as Getaway it’s...

HBO Films: MRS. HARRIS Re-Airs

HBO Films: MRS. HARRIS Re-Airs

This Just In: LIFE’S TOO SHORT Special

This Just In: LIFE’S TOO SHORT Special

Are you a fan of Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Warwick Davis and their little comedy LIFE”S TOO SHORT?  Well, you are in luck, sort of. The HBO/BBC comedy, which had a seven episode run in Feb/March 2012, offers more antics in 2013. Here is the catch to that good news. What makes it onscreen is only a special installment wrapping up the series. The comedy did not make the cut, evidently, for a full Season Two order.  Of course, you don’t have to worry about the comedic trio involved: Gervais has a movie or two, Merchant created and stars in HBO’s HELLO LADIES coming later this year and as for Davis…well…there are to be more...

HBO Sued Over LUCK!

HBO Sued Over LUCK!

Just when HBO’s LUCK was finally just a memory it pulls us back in. HBO has just been slapped with a lawsuit this past week. Of course, it is over the deaths of three horses that occurred at the Santa Anita Park doing filming of the HBO series starring Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte among others. Here are the specifics. The lawsuit was filed by Barbara Casey, a former employee of the American Humane Association (AHA), who alleges that HBO and producers, Stewart Productions, mistreated horses on set and both parties along with the AHA participated in a months-long abuse cover-up. Casey was a longtime veteran of the organization who served as...

New HBO Series VICE Premieres Spring 2013

New HBO Series VICE Premieres Spring 2013

As U.S. troops prepare to leave Afghanistan, the Taliban stoops to an all-time low by recruiting confused, innocent kids as young as six to be suicide bombers. A kindly South Korean preacher runs an underground railroad to rescue young North Korean women from sex slavery in China. A hallucinogen is so powerful that it’s banned by the U.S. government, but is the key ingredient in a witch doctor’s bizarre ritual designed to cure heroin addicts. These are the kinds of stories – usually overlooked by mainstream media outlets – that will be presented on VICE, the news magazine series debuting this spring, exclusively on HBO. Hosted by...

What’s On: HBO Schedule for January 2013

Here we go! The Holidays of 2012 have wound up and 2013 arrives with a whole new year of fresh entertainment from HBO. This coming year will surely have surprises as it offers new seasons of all its current shows and launches some new ones like FAMILY TREE.  Sadly MIA on that front is CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM. There are also HBO Films and specials ahead. In fact, some of us still await PARADE’S END.  We will also see James Gandolfini, Hillary Swank, Michael Douglas, Larry Merchant and others join the ranks of talents on the channel too.  Just who and what we see when, of course, is out of our control. So, even if you want your GAME OF...

HBO Classics: Holiday Programming II

HBO Classics: Holiday Programming II

What’s left to talk about you ask? Well, not only did HBO feature unique programming for Christmas it also had a special lineup to herald in the New Year. Again, while looking at this content you must remember that there was only one HBO channel back in the day, so a variety of programming was on the schedule. Today the format is quite different. In the early days HBO had unscripted comedy programming on all the time, by that I mean not comedy series but comedians and their standup routines. There were two different ongoing shows called ON LOCATION and STANDING ROOM ONLY back then. Between both of them they offered quite a variety of...

Game of Thrones House Anthems

WE WILL. WE WILL ROCK YOU. Yes, ladies and gents, Game of Thrones has already done that. With the detailed story lines, intriguing characters, rich costumes and shifting political allegiances, Game of Thrones is poised to be the best show on HBO and television (in my humble opinion, which, depending on who you are and how you feel about me, you may agree….or disagree, albeit respectfully)! We all know the score that Ramin Djawadi has produced is sumptuous, foreboding and climatic for the series.  However, did you ever stop to think about how much fun it would be to have certain songs represent the various Houses in the Seven Kingdoms? I...

HBO Documentary Film: PROJECT NIM

HBO Documentary Film: PROJECT NIM

Overview: PROJECT NIM tells the story of the chimpanzee that was the focus of a landmark experiment to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child. Combining recent testimony from key participants with dramatic imagery and newly discovered archival film from the 1970s, the feature documentary follows Nim’s extraordinary journey through human society, chronicling his enduring impact on the people he meets. Expectations: This is a topic that highly interests me. Over the Holiday week I will seek this documentary film out, probably on HBOGO, and weigh in on my thoughts. I suspect I will...

Jessa returns from her honeymoon, ready to plant new ideas in Hannah’s head. Newly experienced, Shoshanna struggles to navigate the challenges...

Making of Game of Thrones: Belfast (sort-of) Wrap

Making of Game of Thrones: Belfast (sort-of) Wrap

The latest installment of Making of Game of Thrones was posted today. Although this seems like an old article because all the events have already occurred, it’s still nice to hear Cat’s insight into what goes on behind-the-scenes. This time, she talks about production wrapping in Belfast, the subsequent wrap party, filming in Morocco, as well as the start of production in Iceland. What was interesting to me was that she mentions a scene with stuntmen, ropes, and heights. Sounds intriguing. The only thing I can think of is a certain scene involving The Wall. I don’t want to spoil anything, but book-readers should know what...

HBO Classics: HBO’s Holiday Programming I

HBO Classics: HBO’s Holiday Programming I

What a perfect time to reminisce about HBO in seasons past. I’m going to be sharing about the early days of the pay channel. I’m talking about when HBO was just one channel with all its programming concentrated in one place. There were no HBO FAMILY or HBO COMEDY channels. There actually seemed to me more variety back then but, that could just be because the programming offered now is so spread out over all the HBO channels. Whatever the case may be one time of year that offered a richness of entertainment was during the Holidays. Of course, all the perennial favorites of our youth were watched without fail and that included some pieces...
