Movie Review: Gone Girl

Movie Review: Gone Girl

Adapted from Gillian Flynn’s best-selling suspense novel, Gone Girl is a film sealed with dramatic intensity and highly intellectual storytelling. Its manner of plot development is highly intricate and always has a sense of morbidity lying underneath. Every plot twist is so well crafted that it is never seen coming. That is, of course, unless you’ve read the novel. Gillian Flynn wrote the screenplay herself and has made few changes to the big-screen adaptation, so fans of the novel won’t be surprised by the story. However, they will undoubtedly enjoy watching this mind-consuming and grisly tale come to life. Directed by the iconic...

HBOWatch Prepares for BALLERS & THE BRINK

Everyone knows that the next round of original programming is coming our way starting Sunday, June 21. It all starts with TRUE DETECTIVES 8-episode second season. Following that show is an hour of comedy with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jack Black. Both actors star in their respective series from 10:00pm – 11:00pm ET. While we have been building up a bit of buzz about the moody troubled souls over on the detective series we thought it was time to give a little attention to BALLERS and THE BRINK as well. We start off with BALLERS. Hey, there is not a shitload of videos to help this series along, what’s up? Guess you don’t need any...

HBO’s Westworld Delayed to 2016

HBO’s Westworld Delayed to 2016

Wondering why we haven’t seen a trailer for HBO’s next mega-smash hit Westworld?  So were we. Until we stumbled upon an interview with THR today where HBO’s programming chief Michael Lombardo gave us an update admitting that Westworld will miss its 2015 premiere date promise: “The pilot is a really powerful starting point, but when you’re doing a series, you go, ‘OK, so what’s the next episode? What’s bringing you in?’ You can’t just be a spectacle every week.” Wait, who doesn’t want a spectacle every week!? It doesn’t look like Westworld will be premiering this...

True Detective Season Two: Trailers & Details

True Detective Season Two: Trailers & Details

In the official season two trailer of True Detective, we are introduced to four characters: one villain and what appear to be three good guys. Perhaps still waters run deep. We only see the tip of the iceberg in this trailer, leading us to believe that there’s a lot more to these characters than meets the eye. Each of them has a history, a backstory. Perhaps there’s something in the past that they all want to keep there. Sometimes, the sins of the past tend to catch up with you sooner or later. Let the countdown to the premiere begin!   “Sometimes your best self…..is your worst self.” Vince Vaughn portrays Frank Seymon, who...

Silicon Valley Season Two Finale: “Two Days of the Condor”

Silicon Valley Season Two Finale: “Two Days of the Condor”

This week’s episode brought to you by Cottonelle and Tres Comas After Erlich’s meltdown in the face of his own mediocrity, Richard and Pied Piper have all but lost their binding arbitration with Hooli. Erlich makes a discovery about the value of his house that means once again he’s going to have to kick out everyone else. But their livestream of the condor egg has gotten tens of thousands of filipino viewers. Not for the egg itself but for the man who was sent to pick up the camera, now trapped 127 Hours- style at the bottom of the cliff. Not wanting to see their program fail, even in the face of losing it forever,...

Game of Thrones: “Mother’s Mercy”

Game of Thrones: “Mother’s Mercy”

Everyone still alive out there? Probably not if you watched the season finale. I’m pretty sure the entire world is still recovering, myself included. I’m not sure if I’ll ever recover. It felt like a good portion of this season was slow, setting up major plot lines that will hopefully be explored later, with a few dramatic deaths and character changes thrown in for good measure. All in all, the series continued its tradition of powerful episodes for the second to last and final episodes of the season. “The Fires have melted the snow away.” Melisandre is probably my most hated character. It only becomes worse after she convinces...

Silicon Valley: Season One DVD and Blu Ray Review

Silicon Valley: Season One DVD and Blu Ray Review

Silicon Valley has wrapped up it’s second season on HBO, and to coincide with the sophomore season HBO put out its Season One comprehensive DVD and Blu-Ray set in order to catch people up. This is a review of the DVD version. Design: To start off Silicon Valley has a great cover image. Cleverly parodying the famous Steve Jobs, as if you look up Steve Jobs the first image you will see mirrors the Silicon Valley cover. It’s also amusing if you’ve watched the show as Erlich dresses in this exact outfit in episode four. The back cover briefly outlines the special features on the disc, however it completely neglects to mention...

VICE: “Enemies At The Gates” / “Global Jihad”

VICE: “Enemies At The Gates” / “Global Jihad”

Overview: The Middle East is fracturing. Arab uprisings and military interventions across the region have caused civil wars and spawned terrorist groups. Stuck in the middle of it all is Saudi Arabia. Confronted by extremism on all sides, the desert kingdom is building massive fences at its borders with Iraq and Yemen to keep out terrorist organizations that it may have had a hand in creating. Suroosh Alvi travels to Saudi Arabia to see how America’s staunchest Arab ally is defending itself – and how it may be fanning the flames of global militancy. In the summer of 2014, a group calling themselves the Islamic State, or ISIS,...

LEWIS AND CLARK Miniseries Casts Key Roles

LEWIS AND CLARK Miniseries Casts Key Roles

Two key characters in the story of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and their Corp of Discovery have been cast in the highly anticipated HBO miniseries. They are both important supporting characters that always seem to make it into the history books – Sacagawea and York. Actress Tanaya Beatty (pictured) has been cast as the Shoshone interpreter and guide Sacagawea She aided the expedition in dealing with the various Indian tribes they encountered, though she often slowed the journey down by often getting ill and giving birth along the way. It is said Lewis did not much care for her. The role of York is to be played by Stephen Hill. York...

Documentary Development Slate: SONIC HIGHWAYS 2 and More

Documentary Development Slate: SONIC HIGHWAYS 2 and More

Here is a quick catch up on a few items we found on the documentary front that are in HBO’s future. You are watching HBO documentaries, right?   Foo Fighters Announce SONIC HIGHWAYS 2  We don’t know how many of you enjoyed Foo Fighter’s SONIC HIGHWAYS but it officially becomes a documentary series as the band and HBO plan a followup season. We have confirmation on that because of comments Foo Fighter’s front man Dave Grohl gave in a video interview with NME, or New Musical Express, the weekly music magazine out of Britain. Here are those comments. The comments don’t make clear just when all this will happen as it will take...

David Fincher Comedy (fka LIVING ON VIDEO) Halts Production

David Fincher Comedy (fka LIVING ON VIDEO) Halts Production

First off this show had a title change somewhere along the line and we missed it. The David Fincher comedy chronicling the early biz of music videos in the 1980’s was going under the name of LIVING ON VIDEO. Somewhere along the line it turned into VIDEOSYNCRAZY or spelled “Videosyncrasy” some places. That is a lot cooler moniker anyway. But all that is a moot point according to Deadline.com as the series has now gone dormant.  According to the reporter, though no official word has been stated, there has been talk of a halt to production after already having shot four or five episodes. The series is not supposedly cancelled, but under...

The Leftovers Season 2 Premiere Date: Fall 2015

The Leftovers Season 2 Premiere Date: Fall 2015

After all the mystery surrounding the events of season 1, The Leftovers season 2 will premiere in Fall of 2015. How do we know? Well, HBO released a trailer today that frames the synopsis of the second season.  A road sign (pictured above) reads Jaden, Texas: Departures 0.  Whoa. No one was taken from this town? The overall ratio was said to be 2%. With a population of almost 10,000 you’d expect almost 200 people to have been taken.   Here’s the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bZVUU3zbXk We’ve already reported that The Leftovers will be a “reboot”.  One of our writers was even an extra on the set...

Movie Review: Get On Up

Movie Review: Get On Up

The thing with biopics is that if you don’t know the person whom the film is about particularly well, you can’t be sure that what you are watching is a legitimate portrayal of their life. This was the case watching Get On Up, and annoyingly, even after watching over two hours documenting his life, I still don’t really feel like I know him, not in the way I had hoped anyway.  If the presence of Octavia Spencer and Viola Davies in the films impressive cast wasn’t enough for you to make the connection, this film was directed by Tate Taylor, who is most famous for directing The Help. Unlike The Help however, the...

Silicon Valley: “Blinding Arbitration”

Silicon Valley: “Blinding Arbitration”

If season three were not confirmed I would have firmly believed that this was the second to last episode for Silicon Valley. The cast of Pied Piper have been suffering one massive failure after another this season. Each time they manage to scrape by but only by the skin of their teeth. Last episode however we witnessed them truly fail. They lost a deal which was supposed to make and break their company. We see some consequences of the failure this week but it’s only briefly mentioned. All of the new coders, including the interesting Carla Walton have quit. This has pluses and minuses for the episode as a whole. On the plus side it...

VICE: “Evolution of a Plague” / “Campus Coverup”

VICE: “Evolution of a Plague” / “Campus Coverup”

Overview:  Last year, the worst Ebola outbreak in human history swept through West Africa, killing more than 10,000 in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. The disease spread so quickly in part because the international community was slow to respond, and also because these countries lacked the infrastructure, funding, and street-level awareness to combat the virus. Danny Gold went to West Africa to see how people there have stepped up to control the outbreak, and to learn whether the world is prepared for the next major epidemic. Media reports of sexual assaults on U.S. campuses have risen dramatically over the last few years. More and more...
