HBO Cancels Looking, Plans Final Special Instead of Season 3

HBO Cancels Looking, Plans Final Special Instead of Season 3

Sad news for fans of HBO’s “Looking” which followed the lives of three gay men in San Francisco as they made their way through the modern world.  HBO has elected not to renew the show for what would be a third season. While HBO doesn’t normally make these decisions based on ratings, it probably played a role in Looking’s cancellation.  Only 240,000 viewers watched Looking this season, on average.  That’s below almost every series currently running on HBO’s air right now. “After two years of following Patrick and his tight-knit group of friends as they explored San Francisco in search of love...

Looking Season Finale: “Looking for Home”

Looking Season Finale: “Looking for Home”

I must have gone through an entire box of tissues with how much of an emotional wreck the season two finale of Looking left me in. Throughout its run, Looking has been a highly realistic and serious series, yet always with a comedic dash of sarcasm and hilarity. “Looking for Home,” however, was Looking at its most solemn and intense, and in a very powerful way. The episode covered a lot of relevant topics in both gay and straight culture, such as monogamy, the importance of friendship, and making difficult decisions for the sake of one’s own mental and emotional stability. Ultimately, the boys in Looking have been searching for love...

Girls Season Finale: “Home Birth”

Girls Season Finale: “Home Birth”

The final episode of Girls season 4 wraps up a lot of story lines, and leaves many more to new exciting adventures.   “Be the walker not the dog” Early on in the episode we see Shosh finally land the job she has been searching for. It’s an exciting opportunity that opens up a lot of doors to her future. The only issue however is that it’s in Tokyo. The rest of her arc this episode is her trying to make the decision whether or not she should take the job. Her current boyfriend begs her to stay, but Ray’s business partner convinces her to take the job. The whole season has revolved around Shoshana’s future,...

Telltale Games: EPISODE 3 – “The Sword in the Darkness” Released

Telltale Games: EPISODE 3 – “The Sword in the Darkness” Released

Yesterday, the third installment of Telltale’s episodic video-game set in Westeros was released. Titled, “The Sword in the Darkness,” the newest episode was impressive in its tightly written plot as well as the mechanics of its game-play. The game is about two hours in length and is tightly packed with a mixture of intrigue and action that ensures there is never a dull moment.  Tension runs high as the predicament of the Forresters becomes more intense–affecting the lives not only of those in Ironrath but in other locations as well. Whether it be at the Wall, in Essos, King’s Landing, or the...

HBO Documentary Films: IT’s ME, HILARY: THE MAN WHO DREW ELOISE

HBO Documentary Films: IT’s ME, HILARY: THE MAN WHO DREW ELOISE

Overview: A little girl who lives at the Plaza Hotel, free of parents, school and any notion of boundaries, the illustrated imp Eloise has been an obsession for little girls, a delight for adults and a sly feminist icon for more than 50 years. One of these little girls was Lena Dunham (creator of the hit HBO series “Girls”), who was such a fan that she had an image of Eloise tattooed on her back at age 17. Directed by Matt Wolf and executive produced by Dunham and Jenni Konner, this documentary tells the story of Hilary Knight, the man whose pen helped create Eloise, and recounts the painful events that led to the dissolution of his...

Game of Thrones Writers Confirm Show Will Spoil Books

Game of Thrones Writers Confirm Show Will Spoil Books

It’s been a possibility ever since the show began but now it has been confirmed–the HBO’s Game of Thrones will out-pace and spoil George R.R. Martin’s currently unfinished series, A Song of Ice and Fire upon which the show is based. While many have suspected that this will be the case, due to Martin’s slow writing pace contrasted with the show’s tight schedule, the writers of the Game of Thrones, David Benioff and Dan Weiss recently confirmed that the show will indeed spoil the books at a recent panel discussion at the Oxford Union.  The writers suggested that many aspects of Martin’s...

In Production: BALLERS

In Production: BALLERS

BALLERS, the Dwayne Johnson sports-themed comedy we have been tracking for a while offers up a look or two. Despite the fact that we know little about the show with no promo or tease yet we do know that it is in production. We first caught track of the project back on 06.07.13; on 11.14.13 we mentioned the title and some casting news; and on 02.14.14 HBO gave it a series order. Confirmation of start-up was announced in November of 2014. The only video glimpse has been in the 2014 YearEnder clip. Now evidence of the series in full production is becoming more evident. Maybe a Tease or Trailer is going to surface in April?  As late as...

MADAME X with Anna Paquin In Negotiations with HBO

MADAME X with Anna Paquin In Negotiations with HBO

HBOWatch reported a while back that CASM, the production company run by Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin, had a first look deal with the network upon the conclusion of TRUE BLOOD. Their first pitch to the pay cabler has now surfaced and it is entitled MADAME X. It is being eyed as a potential miniseries for HBO. The project is based on a novel by Kate Manning entitled “My Notorious Life”. We went to Amazon.com to find out more about the source material. Lifting from a Washington Post blurb contained there we learn –   Inspired by a real midwife who became one of the most controversial figures in Victorian New York City, this...

VICE – “We the People” / “Countdown To Extinction”

VICE – “We the People” / “Countdown To Extinction”

Overview: A recent study funded by the Department of Homeland Security listed domestic right-wing groups as two of the top three greatest terrorist threats in America. Nestled within our own borders, these citizens, many of whom are highly trained veterans, are on a mission to protect and defend the rights of the Constitution. After the election of President Obama, the number of these groups skyrocketed by over 800 percent- reaching an all-time high in 2012 with over 1,300. In an effort to understand this phenomenon better, VICE investigates these so-called patriots, training and taking up arms along the border. During the last six decades,...

CODES OF CONDUCT Becomes A Limited Series At HBO

CODES OF CONDUCT Becomes A Limited Series At HBO

Steve McQueen (Oscar winning 12 Years A Slave) will be helming a six-episode order for CODES OF CONDUCT for HBO. HBOWatch has been keeping track of this project for a while and it looks like HBO, in the end, could not pass on a work from the Oscar nominated director of a Best Picture movie. We first picked up on project, which was originally slated as an HBO Film presentation, with this post on 10.31.13. Almost a year later, on 10.14.14, the project took on its current title and gained a lead in Devon Terrell. Back then we stated that the character – is a young man from Queens as talented as he is ambiguous. His self-confidence will enable...

Movie Review: A Million Ways to Die in the West

Movie Review: A Million Ways to Die in the West

There’s a scene in A Million Ways to Die in the West where, hiding out from the bad guys in his flock of sheep, Seth MacFarlane’s character is urinated on. This goes on for several seconds before he finally runs off and for the rest of the movie you’re wondering if he ever washed himself since that happened. There’s another point in this movie where Neil Patrick Harris spends at least (or what feels like) two minutes going to the toilet in his and someone else’s bowler hat. I like bowler hats. A Million Ways to Die in the West is MacFarlane’s followup to the success of Ted, the movie about a stoner whose...

First Look At Game of Thrones Season 5 From the Red Carpet Premiere

Warning! Season Five Episode 1 Spoilers  With just twenty-four days to go until the general public gets to see the first episode of Game of Thrones, a few lucky fans, a host of Game of Thrones actors, and a multitude of press agents gathered together in the Tower of London to watch the Season Five in style. While many enjoyed seeing their favorite GoT actors dressed to the nines, the real excitement of the day came when the reviews of the screened episode began to roll in on various news-sites. While most articles chose to be light on spoilers, like Forbes magazine which delicately praised the episode without hinting much at the...

Looking: “Looking for Sanctuary”

Looking: “Looking for Sanctuary”

The guys of Looking have all been searching for a happy home. Happiness can be so fleeting. What one person sees as happiness, another person has a totally different notion. Especially when you’re in a relationship, you want to be happy with your partner and you have a wide range of emotions running the gamut: are you rushing into a relationship too fast? Will your friends like your new boyfriend/girlfriend? Are you in a relationship for the right reasons? Will your parents and siblings accept your partner? What if you’re “just friends?” When you’re trying build a house with someone you love, is your house a “home”...

Girls: “Daddy Issues”

Girls: “Daddy Issues”

Any Girls fan with a good memory probably reacted the same way I did to last week’s episode: “ELIJAH CALLED IT!” Hannah’s dad dropped the bomb on his wife last week concerning his long-repressed homosexuality, and we anxiously awaited Hannah’s reaction this week after her mom told her the news. Hannah has a knack for making any issue about her, so it was surprising to see her calmly having lunch with her father as they discussed the situation rationally. When her father asks her how she’s taking the news, she replies, “I’m proud of you and I’m worried about mom, but at the end of the day, this isn’t really about me.”...
