Denzel Promises August Wilson Will Come To HBO

Denzel Promises August Wilson Will Come To HBO

A number of plays of renowned playwright August Wilson will be crafted by Denzel Washington to appear on HBO over the next decade. At least that is what Washington said in an interview lately.  I’m not familiar with the interviewer, Todd “The Notorious Ph.D.” Boyd, but do know the work of both Washington and Wilson. Denzel has worked out an arrangement with the estate of the late playwright to craft, produce, direct and act in the unique 10-play compendium called The Pittsburgh Cycle. Washington told those in attendance –       “I’m directing, producing — and acting in one— and I’m executive producing the other...

Movie Review: Exodus Gods and Kings

Movie Review: Exodus Gods and Kings

Epics of ancient history have been a staple of movies for practically a century already. One could simply dress people up in the clothing of the day and mesmerize audiences with scenes ripped out of the past or the future. Ridley Scott has spent a large amount of his career doing just that, jumping back and forth between time periods to make sweeping films about deadly aliens and fierce gladiators. Nearly all his films have been memorable if not for their story then for their unique visuals and visceral thrills. The first time the alien burst from a chest, when Maximus was brought to the Coliseum. These were events that existed in some form...

In Production: HBO’s THE YOUNG POPE

In Production: HBO’s THE YOUNG POPE

When we first reported on THE YOUNG POPE we were not aware of how fast this production was going to come around. Well, it seems that the parties involved what to get this story told. People offers some casting news and photos.   Academy Award winner Diane Keaton joins two-time Academy Award nominee Jude Law in THE YOUNG POPE, the eight-episode drama series from Paolo Sorrentino, director of the Academy Award-winning film The Great Beauty, as well as the upcoming Youth. Keaton stars as Sister Mary, a nun from the U.S. now living in Vatican City. Law is set for the lead role as PIUS XIII, formerly known as Lenny Belardo. James Cromwell is in...

True Detective: A Comparison of Seasons

True Detective: A Comparison of Seasons

Knowing the second season of True Detective would soon air, I crunched time to be able to watch the first season before the new one dropped. I had heard so much excitement and fervor over it. And I was not disappointed. The first season wove an intricate tale or warring partners, their complicated lives, and a killer boosted by religious idolatry. I became easily obsessed with the phenomenal acting, exquisite cinematography, and fantastic soundtrack. So once I finished it, I began anxiously awaiting the next season. I was pleased with the casting and expecting to be blown out of the water. Oh boy, I was pretty disappointed. In my...

Judd Apatow Comedy CRASHING On HBO

Judd Apatow Comedy CRASHING On HBO

Judd Apatow (pictured right) is up and running with another series on HBO. You ask “Wait, did you say another series?” Ah, you forget he executive produces Lena Dunham’s GIRLS. She writes it and is the figurehead for that series, but he has a big say. He now has the go-ahead for a pilot for another NYC based series called CRASHING. Like GIRLS, however, the new series will be written and starring someone else. But unlike, Dunham’s show, Apatow will not only be producing but also directing it. His comedic cohort for this one is comedian Pete Holmes. CRASHING focuses on a sweet, wholesome comedian (Holmes) who, after his wife leaves...

The Brink Season One – The Aftermath

The Brink Season One – The Aftermath

My first impression of The Brink (you can read it here) was a little less than favorable, but you could clearly see the potential of the show. Now that the show’s first season has finished and we know for sure HBO will be doing a second season, the question is, is that the right decision? The Brink has a lot going for it. With a truly wonderful supporting cast including John Larroquette, Erick Avari, Geoff Pierson, Meera Syal and Marshall Manesh, along with the undeniable star power of Black and Robbins, and the support of a network that cares less about ratings than getting people talking, it was almost inevitable that HBO would...

Ballers Season One – Post Game

Ballers Season One – Post Game

When Ballers first aired, it was not what one might call, a runaway hit. The dialogue was cliché, the plots trope, and the characters felt like the guys from Entourage had bulked up and moved to the other side of the agent’s desk. Dwayne Johnson and Rob Corddry had fairly good on-screen chemistry. Omar Miller kind of felt like Private Edward Garlick in Good Morning, Vietnam (played by Forest Whittaker), and John David Washington sounded so much like Denzel that I needed to watch The Pelican Brief again. But, HBO decided to pick up a second season before the 3rd episode even aired, and with good reason. After you get past the initially...

The story once again picks up with the adventures of the BFF’s and this season finds them sharing a Brooklyn NYC apartment. We detailed it all in the What’s On post for September, reprinted here. So what’s going on with these best buds in Season Two? After packing up her life in London, Doll has moved in to Em’s Brooklyn basement, only to find that living in the lap of her friend’s family is surprisingly lonely. Meanwhile, their play is jeopardized when Em gets cast in a Hollywood...

Eight Episode Season of PROJECT GREENLIGHT Starts 09.13.15

The PROJECT GREENLIGHT program returns to HBO after a hiatus of a few years. Its last installment, its third, was in 2005. We told you back in November ‘14 that the series found it finalists and in June we reported they locked in a premiere date.  Now Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and company are ready to present all the results when Season 5 debuts on SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 at 10:00pm. Below is what we know about a few of the episodes as was reported in our monthly look. Episode #26 (season 4, episode 1) Debut date: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 at 10:00pm. Narrowed down from thousands of submissions, 13 finalists arrive in Los Angeles to...

Reminder to Watch – FERRELL TAKES THE FIELD

Reminder to Watch – FERRELL TAKES THE FIELD

After the Saturday Night debut of Ben Stiller’s NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: SECRET OF THE TOMB stick around for a comedy stint from Will Ferrell as he pays a humorous homage to Baseball. His special, which we brought to your attention back on March, debuts SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 at 10:00pm. HBO is doing some odd marketing, or at least this writer thinks so, with this sports-themed event. It joins 7 DAYS IN HELL, which aired in July, as a ‘sports documentary’ instead of calling each of them a ‘comedy special.’ I mentioned this back at the tennis spoof review as well. I guess it doesn’t really matter as long as we get the content. Here...

Movie Review: Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb

Movie Review: Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb

I watched Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb with a fairly open mind as I often find that films like this are a massive guilty pleasure and this looked like it was going to be a cross between the first Night at the Museum with The Mummy, a potentially winning combination in my opinion. The one thing that’s missing from family films like this is the ability to communicate to children without seemingly treating them like they are idiots. Its a shame because the first Night at the Museum managed to get this balance, it was informative, educational and packed full of magic. Reaching the third installment just acts as a reminder...

Russell Simmons Announces HBO Content

Russell Simmons Announces HBO Content

Russel Simmons has been in and out of HBO’s stable through the years ever since DEF COMEDY JAM back in 1992. He had struck a development deal with HBO again in 2013, but we never heard much. Then, back in August he unleashed his plans for the network. We neglected to share it until now so here, via an official press release, is what Simmons has in the offing (my comments appear in red). HBO AND RUSSELL SIMMONS ENTER INTO OVERALL PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT DEAL ——– Network Developing Several New Series And Specials With Simmons For Premium Television; Pact Builds Upon Successful Producing Partnership Beginning With Hit...

HBO Development Slate: THE LOOP; FAMILY DRAMA; Ritchie Sambora & More

HBO Development Slate: THE LOOP; FAMILY DRAMA; Ritchie Sambora & More

It is time to catch up with some development news that is circulating. HBO is always trying to come out with the next funny or exciting program as HBO ramps up its future. It is already lining up big dramatic series in VINYL and WESTWORLD plus adds SESAME STREET & VICE to cover the channel from morning to night. What else will it add? Consider the following.   The Dark Comedy THE LOOP May Be In It The most recent concept in development is billed as a half-hour dark comedy. The project is about a couple who downsizes everything and chooses to sail “The Loop” — a nautical course that cuts through the heart of America. All goes...

Major Greyjoy Storyline Revealed For Season Six

Major Greyjoy Storyline Revealed For Season Six

After years of “We Do Not Show,” the Greyjoys are returning, harder and stronger than ever. This week has been an explosive one for Game of Thrones news as Season Six filming began in earnest and paparazzi reports flooded the Web, but at the height of the media buzz an unlikely storyline rose to the center of attention. According to multiple eye-witness accounts,  several major scenes were being filmed for Season Six involving the Ironborn, the fearless inhabitants of the Iron Islands. As the story developed over the week, it became apparent that the Greyjoy plot might be one of the most exciting ones that we know...

HBO Miniseries: SHOW ME A HERO – Review

HBO Miniseries: SHOW ME A HERO – Review

This mini-series was based on historical events. The City of Yonkers, circa late 1980s, was rife with racial tensions. This was due to a legal order issued by federal Judge Leonard Sand, in order to establish the building of low income housing developments for residents who qualified. On Night One, (remember its debut ran three consecutive Sundays) we were introduced to all the major power players in the political arena – Nick Wasiscko (Oscar Isaacs), Councilman Henry Spallone (Alfred Molina), Judge Sand (Bob Balaban) , lawyer Harry Sussman (Jon Bernthal), City Council President Vincenza Restiano (Winona Ryder), Mayoral opponent...
