True Detective Going for Best Drama Emmy as Opposed to Best Mini-Series

True Detective Going for Best Drama Emmy as Opposed to Best Mini-Series

Those of us who’ve experienced True Detective come away from the series anticipating— no, expecting it to haul in a bunch of awards this year.  But as the first season is self-contained only eight episodes and features rotating actors each year one might assume it would be classified as a “Mini-Series”.  A good example of a modern anthology series by comparison would be FX’s American Horror Story. This week HBO chose to submit True Detective to the TV Academy (the folks who hand out the Emmys) as a Drama series instead of the expected mini category.  This means two things: True Detective will now face...

Game of Thrones S4 to Premiere Simultaneously in US and UK

Game of Thrones S4 to Premiere Simultaneously in US and UK

We have some massive news for Game of Thrones fans in the UK and Ireland; the premiere episode of Season 4, ‘Two Swords’, will air at exactly the same time as it airs across the Atlantic in the US. Typically, each episode airs on Sky Atlantic the Monday directly after its Sunday showing on HBO, at 9pm GMT. However, this year, the episode will air on both HBO and Sky Atlantic at the exact same time. (Note that as of now, this only applies to the Season 4 premiere). Granted, this means that it will be a late night for those of us in the UK and Ireland, but come on…it’s Game of Thrones! The episode will also air at...

Girls Season 3 Finale: Two Plane Rides

Girls Season 3 Finale: Two Plane Rides

So that’s it folks, Girls is over for another season and what a fabulous finale! Of course when the end credits rolled, the pouty bottom lip came out and I automatically pulled a bit of a strop, but all good season finales make you do that right? So let’s recap. The beginning of the episode starts off like something out of a horror movie as scary Caroline, Adam’s bizarre sister, emerges in Hannah’s doorway in a victorian style night gown. Turns out she’s been living with Laird since she vanished and she is now pregnant with his child. That’s enough to make even the strongest souls shudder uncontrollably with fear/disgust that I...

Season Four of Strike Back to be Delayed?

Season Four of Strike Back to be Delayed?

Strike Back, Cinemax’s first original program (co-produced with the British network Sky), has suffered a bit of a set back.  We at HBOWatch realize that you might not be up to speed with Cinemax as we introduce posts about HBO’s sister channel from time to time. One of the successful series that channel has to offer is STRIKE BACK. Since many HBO subscribers also have Cinemax we thought we’d bring you this news about their hit series: While filming the fourth and final season in Thailand, star Sullivan Stapleton has suffered a injury that will force the show to halt production for six months. Stapleton plays the role of...

TRUE DETECTIVE Parodies

TRUE DETECTIVE Parodies

Not much to say about this one really; just wanted to throw a little humor your way. TRUE DETECTIVE Season One has been a treat for a number of us at HBOWatch. One thing we never discussed about it though was the humorous moments throughout. It just dripped with it didn’t it? (You did read sarcasm in that, right?)  Actually, Martin Hart, through Woody Harrelson cracked off a few one-liners, but Matthew McConaughey’s Rust Cohle, not so much. But Patton Oswalt, Joel McHale and some others sure did find the humor in Rust and we wanted to pass it along. Enjoy!    Now after you have seen these we want you to weigh in on which one you think...

Two More Game of Thrones Season 4 Trailers!

Two More Game of Thrones Season 4 Trailers!

Ok, HBO, I think it’s time to calm down a bit before you spoil the entire season before it even premieres! Nevertheless, here are two more (unexpected) short TV spots for the upcoming fourth season. SPOILER WARNING!!!                     [I'm leaving a buffer area here as a last incentive to turn back unless you want a major plot development potentially spoiled.]                     OK, YOU WERE WARNED. Here they are: As a reader of the books, I’m quite surprised that a particular shot was included in one of the...

VICE: Season Two Episode 2 Review

VICE: Season Two Episode 2 Review

Overview: Greenland recorded its highest temperatures ever in 2013. Though some say that’s not cause for concern, the equivalent of three Chesapeake Bays’-worth of water melts off the island every year, affecting sea levels around the world. VICE embarks on an expedition to Greenland with climate scientist Jason Box to discover the reasons for the melting, and how the resulting sea level rise will mean devastation sooner than expected. Millions of men, women and children work as bonded laborers in Pakistan’s brick kilns pictured above). This abusive practice is facilitated by the devastating disenfranchisement of workers and by the...

This “breathtaking” (Time) crime drama, which was the most-watched first season of any HBO original series since the legendary premiere of Six Feet Under in 2001, makes its home entertainment debut on Blu-ray with Digital HD  DVD and...

Movie Review: The Hangover: Part 3

Movie Review: The Hangover: Part 3

It’s a bizarre situation to be in with a movie like this one. The first Hangover movie was a fun little adventure across Las Vegas for three friends who have to figure out where they left their friend during a bachelor party gone haywire with the inclusion of illicit substances and a stolen tiger. Well received and award winning, a sequel was all but inevitable. And inevitably it came, in “The Hangover: Part 2″ also known as “The Hangover: The First One Again Only Worse”. Making a sequel just to cash in on the recent success or name recognition of a movie doesn’t warrant a truly damning opinion of a...

Development Slate: LAUGHS UNLIMITED; MADAME ROSE; OPEN & More

Development Slate: LAUGHS UNLIMITED; MADAME ROSE; OPEN & More

A real interesting bit of news comes up this time around. Just when I thought a couple of projects had been passed over by HBO they resurface again. Plus, there are some other little tidbits that prove that HBO is always looking for the right content to make the premium channel more than just the usual TV fare.    HBO Considers Given Up For Dead Concept LAUGHS UNLIMITED  Out of the blue an announcement came forth that actress Melonie Diaz (pictured) has been cast as the lead in a dramatic work called LAUGHS UNLIMITED. Now we hear casting buzz all the time; the clinch here is that we haven’t even heard anything about this potential...

Doll and Em Episodes One and Two

Doll and Em Episodes One and Two

The first thing you need to understand about Doll and Em is that it is really a drama wrapped in the shroud of a comedy. I mean, sure, there are funny moments. But they are more of the awkward, absurd, or tragic sort. There is nothing slap stick or uproarious about the first episode. Instead, what we have is a relationship drama and many opportunities to snicker at the contradictory and selfish manner in which the main characters behave. Episode one begins with an absolutely fantastic montage revealing how Doll’s life fell apart after separating from her husband. This opening scene features no dialog and is accompanied only by music. I...

During the interview, viewers were exclusively shown the very first official clip from the upcoming fourth season. The clip, from the first episode of the fourth season, Two Swords, shows a snippet of a scene involving Grey Worm and Daario Naharis. This provides us with our first look at Michiel Huisman in the role of Daario, after the role was recast. Here it is: What do you think? Let us know below in the comments. Game of Thrones Season 4...

Game of Thrones: The Movie?

Game of Thrones: The Movie?

Ah it’s that time of year again.  Spring is in the air, taxes are almost due and yes: Game of Thrones is nearly back on the air.  And with that build up and excitement comes the inevitable appearances and interviews with our favorite cast of characters.  One character in particular, George R.R Martin himself, First of His Name (I’m guessing), has been making the rounds of late. Responding to a question about the possible overall length of the series posed by The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet premiere for season four Martin spaketh thusly:  “It all depends on how long the main series runs.  Do we run for seven...
