Girls Season 4 Begins Production

It seems like only yesterday we were watching the Girls season 3 finale… wait… it was just last week!  And we’re already talking about season 4?  We knew the show was coming back for a fourth season but if this newsman remembers correctly this may be quickest move into production yet for Girls.  Today Lena Dunham tweeted that a table read for the new season of Girls is currently taking place: Today was first table read of @girlsHBO season 4! Still convinced I’m 9 years old & yet I’ve been simulating sex on TV for years now… — Lena Dunham (@lenadunham) March 31, 2014 Oh Lena… so silly....

VICE: Season Two Episode 3 Review

VICE: Season Two Episode 3 Review

Overview: Cities like Detroit and Cleveland are at the forefront of a new phenomenon: scrapping. People left behind are literally ripping apart old schools, houses, hospitals and factories for raw materials to hawk to local scrap yards for cash. Scrap metal is one of the United States’ biggest exports, with billions of dollars’ worth traveling to China every year, where it’s invested in their infrastructure. The price for a pound of copper, for example, is about five times more than it was in 2002. Correspondent David Choe looks at the life cycle of scrap metal, from the people who risk their lives to find it, to the yards that buy...

HBO Comedy Special: John Leguizamo’s GHETTO KLOWN

HBO Comedy Special: John Leguizamo’s GHETTO KLOWN

This is just more of a quick reminder than a review. John Leguizamo’s GHETTO KLOWN debuted on 03.22 and this writer watched it and laughed pretty hard with it. It is still airing across the HBO platforms well into April and at HBOGO as well. GHETTO KLOWN was taped last November at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, NJ. Leguizamo tells audiences that the show is like therapy and spins a “cautionary tale” that begins with childhood memories, continues through the early days of his acting career, and arrives on the sets of well-known TV series and major motion pictures, while addressing his recurring feelings of self-doubt,...

HBO Movie Review: “The Heat”

HBO Movie Review: “The Heat”

So, this is your typical buddy cop movie, except it’s with two women who play the officers. One is ambitious, prim and slightly arrogant. As in her colleagues wouldn’t miss her if she got a promotion, especially if it was in another town! The other is aggressive, sarcastic, and funny as hell and has a slightly unorthodox approach to her work. However, she gets the job done. As in 5 minutes ago. Melissa’s character, Shannon Mullins, is from a loud, boisterous and tight knit Irish family who hail from Boston. Sandra Bullock’s character, Sarah Ashburn, is an uptight FBI investigator who is single and a bit on the lonely side. This...

What’s On: HBO Schedule for April 2014

We are heading into April and it is going to be HUGE! It is not only full of dragons and swords but also has a Kaiju and a VEEP. It is also bejeweled with Crystal, Silicon and Steel and a dose of High Hopes and VICE and that’s not all. Wait, enough of the corny play on words let’s get to the specifics of What’s On! Originals: April is the month for switching the lineup to its Spring programming. Both HBO and HBOWatch have been gearing up with promotional footage about the returning and new shows forthcoming. The biggest buzz, of course, has been all about GAME OF THRONES. The show returns for its ten-episode fourth season on Sunday,...

Doll and Em, episodes 3 and 4

Doll and Em, episodes 3 and 4

The third episode of Doll and Em is largely a success, further exploring Doll and Em’s friendship and their new dynamic. Doll is still struggling to figure out how she fits in to Em’s Hollywood lifestyle, while Em is trying to balance the fact that Doll is, ostensibly, her best friend and yet her employee as well. Episode three begins right where the previous episodes left off, in tone and theme at least. Doll is standing in for Em as the lighting is adjusted for a scene that is to be shot on set. Just as the lighting is perfectly adjusted, Doll is unceremoniously moved aside and Em steps in, ready to soak up all of the attention. This...

True Detective Going for Best Drama Emmy as Opposed to Best Mini-Series

True Detective Going for Best Drama Emmy as Opposed to Best Mini-Series

Those of us who’ve experienced True Detective come away from the series anticipating— no, expecting it to haul in a bunch of awards this year.  But as the first season is self-contained only eight episodes and features rotating actors each year one might assume it would be classified as a “Mini-Series”.  A good example of a modern anthology series by comparison would be FX’s American Horror Story. This week HBO chose to submit True Detective to the TV Academy (the folks who hand out the Emmys) as a Drama series instead of the expected mini category.  This means two things: True Detective will now face...

Game of Thrones S4 to Premiere Simultaneously in US and UK

Game of Thrones S4 to Premiere Simultaneously in US and UK

We have some massive news for Game of Thrones fans in the UK and Ireland; the premiere episode of Season 4, ‘Two Swords’, will air at exactly the same time as it airs across the Atlantic in the US. Typically, each episode airs on Sky Atlantic the Monday directly after its Sunday showing on HBO, at 9pm GMT. However, this year, the episode will air on both HBO and Sky Atlantic at the exact same time. (Note that as of now, this only applies to the Season 4 premiere). Granted, this means that it will be a late night for those of us in the UK and Ireland, but come on…it’s Game of Thrones! The episode will also air at...

Girls Season 3 Finale: Two Plane Rides

Girls Season 3 Finale: Two Plane Rides

So that’s it folks, Girls is over for another season and what a fabulous finale! Of course when the end credits rolled, the pouty bottom lip came out and I automatically pulled a bit of a strop, but all good season finales make you do that right? So let’s recap. The beginning of the episode starts off like something out of a horror movie as scary Caroline, Adam’s bizarre sister, emerges in Hannah’s doorway in a victorian style night gown. Turns out she’s been living with Laird since she vanished and she is now pregnant with his child. That’s enough to make even the strongest souls shudder uncontrollably with fear/disgust that I...

Season Four of Strike Back to be Delayed?

Season Four of Strike Back to be Delayed?

Strike Back, Cinemax’s first original program (co-produced with the British network Sky), has suffered a bit of a set back.  We at HBOWatch realize that you might not be up to speed with Cinemax as we introduce posts about HBO’s sister channel from time to time. One of the successful series that channel has to offer is STRIKE BACK. Since many HBO subscribers also have Cinemax we thought we’d bring you this news about their hit series: While filming the fourth and final season in Thailand, star Sullivan Stapleton has suffered a injury that will force the show to halt production for six months. Stapleton plays the role of...

TRUE DETECTIVE Parodies

TRUE DETECTIVE Parodies

Not much to say about this one really; just wanted to throw a little humor your way. TRUE DETECTIVE Season One has been a treat for a number of us at HBOWatch. One thing we never discussed about it though was the humorous moments throughout. It just dripped with it didn’t it? (You did read sarcasm in that, right?)  Actually, Martin Hart, through Woody Harrelson cracked off a few one-liners, but Matthew McConaughey’s Rust Cohle, not so much. But Patton Oswalt, Joel McHale and some others sure did find the humor in Rust and we wanted to pass it along. Enjoy!    Now after you have seen these we want you to weigh in on which one you think...
