Movie Review: Getaway

Jul 26, 2014

Many times in reviews the term “mindless entertainment” is thrown around, with such ease that the term itself has become a cliché. However for a film as clichéd and campy as Getaway it’s...

Bryan Cranston to Star in HBO’s Adaptation of All The Way

Bryan Cranston to Star in HBO’s Adaptation of All The Way

Variety reports that Bryan Cranston (of Breaking Bad fame) will reprise his lead role in HBO’s adaptation of the stage play All the Way. Written by Robert Schenkkan, All the Way tells the story of Lyndon B. Johnson’s first year as President. It chronicles the time from the assassination of President Kennedy to Johnson’s reelection. Though Jack Willis originated the role of LBJ in Oregon, Cranston took over the role for the play’s Broadway run. He and the play would go on to win numerous awards, including the Tony, The Drama League Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, and the Drama Desk Award. The HBO adaptation...

Rupert Murdoch Tries & Fails to Purchase HBO

Rupert Murdoch Tries & Fails to Purchase HBO

No, this isn’t a sensationalist headline.  No, we don’t mean that he failed to subscribe to HBO through his favorite cable provider. No, indeed: Rupert Murdoch, owner of a cornucopia of media outlets including Fox, Fox News and a pile of newspapers and magazines wants to add Time Warner, HBO’s parent company to his portfolio. As you probably know: HBO is a subsidiary of Time Warner along with CNN, TBS and Warner Bros. movies. Not to be confused with Time Warner Cable, a former product of TW and was recently purchased by Comcast. How much did he offer, you ask? How does 80 Billion (with a B) sound? Had it gone through it...

HBO Documentary Films: BOY INTERRUPTED

HBO Documentary Films: BOY INTERRUPTED

Overview: BOY INTERRUPTED is a documentary about the suicide of fifteen year old Evan Perry. The teen came from a family with a history of mental illness; his uncle had committed suicide age 21. Evan had been diagnosed with depression and prescribed Prozac, then with bipolar depression and prescribed mood stabilizers. However, aged 15, he jumped to his death from his family’s apartment window. This film chronicles his journey as told via his parents, Hart and Dana Perry, both filmmakers.     Expectations: I actually remember somewhat of this documentary which I saw five years ago. Since it has not been given an HBOWatch review I...

True Blood Season 7: Death Is Not the End

True Blood Season 7: Death Is Not the End

I don’t understand how some of True Blood got to where it is. Does anyone know exactly how Holly escaped, or why they took her out hunting in the first place? There’s other stuff that doesn’t make sense either. Take Alcide’s death, for example. Senseless, stupid, no logic or justice. Then there’s Maxine Fortenberry– that was a death only slightly less completely satisfying than Russell Edgington and took FAR too long. Now we’re wasting valuable screen time notifying relatives who were Never In This Show. I guess we’re going to have The Return of Hoyt and Grandpa Terminator for the final big...

The Leftovers Season 1: “Two Boats and a Helicopter”

The Leftovers Season 1: “Two Boats and a Helicopter”

With a television show that revolves around a central mystery it’s impossible to solve the puzzle this early in a season. Instead of focusing on the central puzzle, this episode focuses entirely on one of its pieces. The entire episode is from the point of view of priest Matt Jamison, played excellently here by Christopher Eccleston. In prior episodes we were unsure about the characters’ motivations and relationships. He shows up in the pilot to stir things up at the remembrance ceremony, and is seen briefly in last week’s episode interacting with Nora Durst (the woman who lost the entirety of her family to the event). Here we...

George R. R. Martin gives the Iron Finger to naysayers

George R. R. Martin gives the Iron Finger to naysayers

In a recent interview with the Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger, the acclaimed author of A Song of Ice and Fire, upon which Game of Thrones is based, was asked how he would respond to fans’ worries about his health giving out before he has the opportunity to finish the remaining books. Martin responded thusly: “I find that question pretty offensive, frankly, when people start speculating about my death and my health. So fuck you to those people.” Although his response was accompanied by a signature chuckle and raised middle finger, it is apparent that he feels insulted by such inappropriate questions, and rightly...

Šibenik, Croatia confirmed as new Game of Thrones filming location

Šibenik, Croatia confirmed as new Game of Thrones filming location

We can now confirm that the Croatian town of Šibenik will be used as a new shooting location for scenes in the upcoming fifth season of Game of Thrones. Astute book readers can probably guess what this location will be used for, from the images alone. Šibenik town officials and the Deputy Mayor, Danijel Mileta, announced this week that the show will be shooting in their town in September. However, the announcement was met with some unfortunate local controversy. Here’s a rundown of it from WiC’s report: The announcement … has been met with some local controversy. According to Šibenik.in, HBO has had trouble securing...
