I’m waiting for season 3 DVD news to drop and I’m contemplating just digitally downloading, and well I couldn’t help but think about which Girls character I most emulate. With shows like...

Movie Review: That Awkward Moment

Nov 21, 2014

What I most came away from this movie with was that this film was a guy’s film trying to pass itself off as a girl’s film. Not saying movies are necessarily gender oriented, but you...

The Newsroom Season 3: Boston

The Newsroom Season 3: Boston

The Newsroom returned this past Sunday with relentless suspense and a fantastic reintroduction to our favorite news crew. However, before we begin, let’s recap where we left off and what this means for the characters now. Will McAvoy, still as enraged and outspoken as ever, has recovered from his OD, the voicemail incident with Mac, and the two begin discussing their wedding plans in the season premiere. Jim is still as vivacious as ever yet remains tormented by his relationship with Maggie. Their love lives are as tumultuous as ever, particularly after the “Sex and the City” bus tour fiasco, Jim’s decision to date Lisa (the girl...

GETTING ON Season Two Premiere: “No Such Thing as Idealized Genitalia”

GETTING ON Season Two Premiere: “No Such Thing as Idealized Genitalia”

You know, this writer could kick himself for not reviewing VEEP when it first started because it is my favorite comedy right now. I thought it was going to be too hard to review comedy because it is so subjective, but then I got into GETTING ON and ended up reviewing it and it proves to be my second favorite comedy on the channel (sorry GIRLS). So now we come around to Season Two of our visit with the denizens of the Billy Barnes Unit to see what hi-jinks they can get into. Had I seen Season One of THE COMEBACK I might have reviewed both comedies in their sophomore year but, like I said I love DiDi, Dawn, Jenna and Patsy, so they win out....

HBO Acquires Rights to Asimov’s Foundation Series

HBO Acquires Rights to Asimov’s Foundation Series

Last year Sony pictures picked up the filming rights to Isaac Asimov’s seminal work, the Foundation series of novels in a massive, multi-studio auction. A feature picture project was set into motion with high-powered names behind it but for whatever reason the work fell through and nothing materialized.  This summer HBO paid a pretty penny to acquire the rights to Foundation when Sony put it back up onto the auction block. The acquisition of filming rights (even expensive, exciting ones!) doesn’t necessarily mean that a series is going to make it to air but this week Jonathan Nolan, writer of the movie Momento and now scribe...

HBO Sets Premiere Date for GIRLS, TOGETHERNESS and LOOKING For 01.11.15; Updated Now With Teasers

Update: This post is now bumped up to include a couple of teasers recently released. We already have the trailer for GIRLS, but now we can add ones for the other two shows coming Sundays in January 2015. First up is our first look at the new show in the line-up TOGETHERNESS.    Ouch, they may be together, but they don’t seem to happy.  We will have to wait until January to deconstruct that relationship.  Next up we get a glimpse of how our San Fran boys are faring. Here is a Teaser for LOOKING.    Consider yourself teased I guess. _____________________________________ An announcement has come forward from HBO announcing...

Happy 42nd Birthday HBO!

Happy 42nd Birthday HBO!

Okay, so it isn’t a milestone anniversary year for HOME BOX OFFICE, but I felt the need to not let the date November 08 go by without a salute to the network we love. It began broadcasting back in 1972 and as this writer’s first post on HBOWatch indicates I was lucky enough to get the premium channel in my household in those early days. Regarding those formative years Wikipedia states – In the summer of 1971, while on a family vacation in  France, Charles Dolan came up with the concept for a cable-originated television service called “The Green Channel“. Dolan later presented his idea to Time-Life management;...

Movie Review: The Legend of Hercules

Movie Review: The Legend of Hercules

2014 has been a great year for movies about Ancient Greece. “300: Rise of an Empire” sailed into theatres this past spring, and we saw not one but two Hercules-inspired movies. We can even throw “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” into the pile as it’s based on Greek myths with a modern twist. While we have historical proof in the writings of Herodotus to back up much of 2006’s “300” and its sequel “300: Rise of an Empire,” we must look to mythology for legends regarding Hercules and his Greek counterpart, Heracles. For well over half my life, I have studied mythology and spent...

A Sopranos Prequel? David Chase Teases Us Again

A Sopranos Prequel? David Chase Teases Us Again

You may be having a sense of deja vu because we’ve reported on similar statements by Sopranos creator David Chase in the past. But the ramifications of a prequel to one of the most successful HBO series’ of all time are too great to ignore.  In a recent interview with the AP Chase said this when asked about another series with the word “Soprano” in the title: “Even if I did it, it wouldn’t be ‘The Sopranos’ that was on the air — obviously at least one person is gone that we would need,” he says. “There are a couple of eras that would be interesting for me to talk about, about...

HBO Boxing: Hopkins vs Kovalev – Saturday 11.08.14

HBO Boxing: Hopkins vs Kovalev – Saturday 11.08.14

What if I told you a 49 year old man was going to get in a boxing ring with an undefeated 31 year old with 25 wins and 23 knockouts? You might think that sounds like a farce, a laughable mismatch. In fact it is the best matchup, on paper, in the sport of boxing for the rest of the year. That’s because the 49 year old is Bernard Hopkins, master chess player of the ring. He has never been knocked out or cleanly defeated by decision, a fighter that has forgotten more about boxing than most will ever know. He has been underestimated in every major fight he has had. The 31 year old is Sergey Kovalev. He is young, hungry, in his physical...

Girls Season 4 Teasers & Trailers: What’s Ahead?

Update: A REAL trailer for premiere of Girls season 4 is up as well! Now before we can delve into what is coming ahead for our favorite mid-20s Girls, let’s refresh on where we left them. Hannah and Adam had a fight (nothing new there) which leaves her torn on the precipice of a major life/career decision. Marnie was discovering Desi’s silver tongue…in her mouth. Wondering how Desi’s girlfriend feels about that?  Didn’t seem good.  Shoshanna didn’t graduate, found out Ray slept with Marnie, and desperately tried to get him back and failed. Poor Shosh. Druggie turned caretaker Jessa tried to help a woman...

HBO Miniseries: OLIVE KITTRIDGE

HBO Miniseries: OLIVE KITTRIDGE

Overview: This four-hour event tells the poignantly sweet, acerbically funny and devastatingly tragic story of a seemingly placid New England town wrought with illicit affairs, crime and tragedy, told through the lens of Olive (Frances McDormand), whose wicked wit and harsh demeanor mask a warm but troubled heart and staunch moral center. Richard Jenkins portrays Olive’s husband, Henry.  The story, which spans 25 years, focuses on her relationships with her husband, Henry, the good-hearted and kindly town pharmacist; their son, Christopher, who resents his mother’s approach to parenting; and other members of their community. The...

HBO Considers the BROS.

HBO Considers the BROS.

Anthony Hemingway, who directed works like the remake of the Manchurian Candidate, Will Smith’s Ali, and episodes of HBO’s TREME, THE NEWSROOM and TRUE BLOOD has a comedy that HBO is interested in.  It is entitled BROS which is written by up and coming Ben Cory Jones (pictured) who penned the work based on his real life as a gay black with his straight brothers. BROS focuses on these three siblings as they relate to each other and deal with their luck or lack of it in dating and love. The concept was reworked from an earlier vision from writer Jones that was then known as Bros Before Hos. In an interview with Indiewire Jones states...

True Detective Season 2 Filming Finally Underway!

After months of speculation and hand wringing the stars have finally aligned (or, at least their busy schedules have!). True Detective season two will begin filming in LA next week!  How do we know this? Well recently confirmed star of season 2 tweeted as much just yesterday:   Heading to LA!!! Start filming #TrueDetective this week. @TD_HBO @HBO — Taylor Kitsch (@_TaylorKitsch) November 4, 2014 Woohoo!  Get over there and do your thing, Taylor. Some fans were worried that True Detective would not even make a 2015 premiere date if it didn’t get into the can in 2014. The production, including filming and editing takes roughly...
