Is Game of Thrones Too Controversial For TV?

Jul 4, 2015

(WARNING: SPOILERS ON EVENTS DURING SEASON FIVE OF GAME OF THRONES) After the conclusion of what I feel was a strong season, I believe it is now time for reflection on a show which has not shied...

VICE: “Enemies At The Gates” / “Global Jihad”

VICE: “Enemies At The Gates” / “Global Jihad”

Overview: The Middle East is fracturing. Arab uprisings and military interventions across the region have caused civil wars and spawned terrorist groups. Stuck in the middle of it all is Saudi Arabia. Confronted by extremism on all sides, the desert kingdom is building massive fences at its borders with Iraq and Yemen to keep out terrorist organizations that it may have had a hand in creating. Suroosh Alvi travels to Saudi Arabia to see how America’s staunchest Arab ally is defending itself – and how it may be fanning the flames of global militancy. In the summer of 2014, a group calling themselves the Islamic State, or ISIS,...

LEWIS AND CLARK Miniseries Casts Key Roles

LEWIS AND CLARK Miniseries Casts Key Roles

Two key characters in the story of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and their Corp of Discovery have been cast in the highly anticipated HBO miniseries. They are both important supporting characters that always seem to make it into the history books – Sacagawea and York. Actress Tanaya Beatty (pictured) has been cast as the Shoshone interpreter and guide Sacagawea She aided the expedition in dealing with the various Indian tribes they encountered, though she often slowed the journey down by often getting ill and giving birth along the way. It is said Lewis did not much care for her. The role of York is to be played by Stephen Hill. York...

Documentary Development Slate: SONIC HIGHWAYS 2 and More

Documentary Development Slate: SONIC HIGHWAYS 2 and More

Here is a quick catch up on a few items we found on the documentary front that are in HBO’s future. You are watching HBO documentaries, right?   Foo Fighters Announce SONIC HIGHWAYS 2  We don’t know how many of you enjoyed Foo Fighter’s SONIC HIGHWAYS but it officially becomes a documentary series as the band and HBO plan a followup season. We have confirmation on that because of comments Foo Fighter’s front man Dave Grohl gave in a video interview with NME, or New Musical Express, the weekly music magazine out of Britain. Here are those comments. The comments don’t make clear just when all this will happen as it will take...

David Fincher Comedy (fka LIVING ON VIDEO) Halts Production

David Fincher Comedy (fka LIVING ON VIDEO) Halts Production

First off this show had a title change somewhere along the line and we missed it. The David Fincher comedy chronicling the early biz of music videos in the 1980’s was going under the name of LIVING ON VIDEO. Somewhere along the line it turned into VIDEOSYNCRAZY or spelled “Videosyncrasy” some places. That is a lot cooler moniker anyway. But all that is a moot point according to Deadline.com as the series has now gone dormant.  According to the reporter, though no official word has been stated, there has been talk of a halt to production after already having shot four or five episodes. The series is not supposedly cancelled, but under...

The Leftovers Season 2 Premiere Date: Fall 2015

The Leftovers Season 2 Premiere Date: Fall 2015

After all the mystery surrounding the events of season 1, The Leftovers season 2 will premiere in Fall of 2015. How do we know? Well, HBO released a trailer today that frames the synopsis of the second season.  A road sign (pictured above) reads Jaden, Texas: Departures 0.  Whoa. No one was taken from this town? The overall ratio was said to be 2%. With a population of almost 10,000 you’d expect almost 200 people to have been taken.   Here’s the trailer: We’ve already reported that The Leftovers will be a “reboot”.  One of our writers was even an extra on the set of The Leftovers season two. Read his...

Movie Review: Get On Up

Movie Review: Get On Up

The thing with biopics is that if you don’t know the person whom the film is about particularly well, you can’t be sure that what you are watching is a legitimate portrayal of their life. This was the case watching Get On Up, and annoyingly, even after watching over two hours documenting his life, I still don’t really feel like I know him, not in the way I had hoped anyway.  If the presence of Octavia Spencer and Viola Davies in the films impressive cast wasn’t enough for you to make the connection, this film was directed by Tate Taylor, who is most famous for directing The Help. Unlike The Help however, the...

Silicon Valley: “Blinding Arbitration”

Silicon Valley: “Blinding Arbitration”

If season three were not confirmed I would have firmly believed that this was the second to last episode for Silicon Valley. The cast of Pied Piper have been suffering one massive failure after another this season. Each time they manage to scrape by but only by the skin of their teeth. Last episode however we witnessed them truly fail. They lost a deal which was supposed to make and break their company. We see some consequences of the failure this week but it’s only briefly mentioned. All of the new coders, including the interesting Carla Walton have quit. This has pluses and minuses for the episode as a whole. On the plus side it...

VICE: “Evolution of a Plague” / “Campus Coverup”

VICE: “Evolution of a Plague” / “Campus Coverup”

Overview:  Last year, the worst Ebola outbreak in human history swept through West Africa, killing more than 10,000 in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. The disease spread so quickly in part because the international community was slow to respond, and also because these countries lacked the infrastructure, funding, and street-level awareness to combat the virus. Danny Gold went to West Africa to see how people there have stepped up to control the outbreak, and to learn whether the world is prepared for the next major epidemic. Media reports of sexual assaults on U.S. campuses have risen dramatically over the last few years. More and more...

Game of Thrones: “The Dance of Dragons”

Game of Thrones: “The Dance of Dragons”

In case anyone has forgotten, “Game of Thrones” has firmly reestablished that its mother material is the series A Song of Ice and Fire. Last week’s episode, “Hardhome,” left us all with a chilling coldness that was blasted away this week. “The Dance of Dragons” was on fire. Literally. And that fire wasn’t contained to just one place, person, or thing. The episode begins with fire and keeps on burning to the very last second. Was this one of the best episodes this season? Yes, because it doesn’t drag everyone down with politics and nuances and confessions. Was it better than last...

What to Expect from True Detective Season Two

What to Expect from True Detective Season Two

The amount of information that has been drip fed to us following the breath-taking, gut-wrenching finale of the first season of True Detective has been incredibly minimal. With two teaser trailers, a handful of photos from the set and some very intriguing character posters, speculation as to what this second season is going to hold is only adding to the anticipation. We don’t know a lot, but what we do know is that Colin Farrell plays Detective Ray Velcoro, Vince Vaughn plays criminal Frank Semyon, Rachel McAdams is Ani Bezzerides, the County Sheriff, and Taylor Kitsch is Paul Woodrugh, the cop who discovers the body that kicks everything...

Morgan Freeman Brings Bass Reeves Miniseries to HBO

Morgan Freeman Brings Bass Reeves Miniseries to HBO

Yet another miniseries adapted from a biography is in the planning stages at HBO. This project takes us to the classic Old West to play out the life of frontier Marshal Bass Reeves. Actor Morgan Freeman is one of the producers that will adapt the Art T. Burton biography Black Gun, Silver Star: The Life and Legend of Frontier Marshall Bass Reeves. Just who was this Old West lawman? He escaped from slavery during the civil war fleeing into Indian territory where he honed his firearm skills. He went on to become one of the first black U.S. Deputy Marshals in the Oklahoma territory deputized by the legendary “hanging judge” Isaac C....

Movie Review: The Judge

Movie Review: The Judge

I haven’t seen a recently released movie quite as good as “The Judge” in a very long time. The combined star power of Robert Downey, Jr., and Robert Duvall create not just a memorable drama, but a riveting story of a family that has fallen apart because of the distance between Downey’s Hank Palmer and Duvall’s Judge Joseph Palmer. Vincent D’Onofrio as Glen Palmer and Billy Bob Thornton as prosecuting attorney Dwight Dickham also add crucial supporting actor roles that act as hinges for RDJ and Duvall to swing on. And boy, do Downey and Duvall know how to act with and against each other! Hank Palmer, a...

Duplass Brothers’ Animated ANIMALS to Series at HBO

Duplass Brothers’ Animated ANIMALS to Series at HBO

HBO is returning to adult animation with ANIMALS in 2016. The network hasn’t seen that genre since THE LIFE & TIMES OF TIM aired. Jay & Mark Duplass, the brother producing team behind HBO’s TOGETHERNESS (in which Mark stars as Brett Pierson) have sold the animation concept to HBO straight out of the Sundance Festival earlier this year. Note that they are not talking about a pilot being ordered, but that a two-season run is already planned beginning in 2016. ANIMALS revolves around the downtrodden creatures native to Earth’s least habitable environment: New York City. Whether it’s lovelorn rats, gender-questioning pigeons or...

THE GORBURGER SHOW Awarded an HBO Pilot!

THE GORBURGER SHOW Awarded an HBO Pilot!

Fans of SILICON VALLEY know T. J. Miller as the gem of a character named Erlich, but that is not his only character out there. He is also Gorburger in a YouTube series that HBO is now interested in. Who is Gorburger? You won’t believe it, so just get a gander of the picture below.   It seems T. J. Miller is a part of the comedians over at Funny or Die and it is through that troupe that THE GORBURGER SHOW has found life on YouTube. It shows us a Japanese talk show invaded by and now hosted by the blue-tinted monster.  The monster tries to understand what it means to be human by interviewing celebrities. Miller is not only a co-writer of...
